The dominant theme in the crypto market this year has once again been the meme coins trend. Data from CoinGecko’s global traffic analysis shows that the majority of investor attention has been directed toward this category. Overall, the meme coin space captured over 25% of interest throughout the year, surpassing all other trends.

This indicates that speculative market behavior remains strong, and short-term trend movements continue to influence investor psychology. Sudden price surges in major meme token projects like DOGE and SHIB highlight the continued enthusiasm for quick profit opportunities.

Main Meme Coin Theme Retains Popularity

The main meme coin category remained the most-watched narrative this year. Despite a slight decline in its percentage share, it retained a top position, showing that investors have not abandoned this segment. The Solana meme coin ecosystem stood out, while AI-based meme token projects also remained within the top twenty. New meme coin initiatives on the Base network lost some popularity during the year but still maintain a broad following.

The leading meme coin sub-trends this year are:

Solana-based meme coin projects (4.57% investor interest)

AI-themed meme coin ecosystem (1.51%)

New meme coin wave on the Base network (1.40%)

According to CoinGecko, the total investor interest in the main meme coin category and its 35 sub-trends reached 25.02%. This slightly lower figure compared to last year’s 30.67% indicates a minor cooling in speculative activity.

AI Themes Become the Second Major Force

The second most popular trend in 2025 was AI-focused projects. AI agents and the DeFAI ecosystem together raised total investor interest to 22.39%, making it one of the market’s leading forces.

Among new trends, the Virtuals Protocol ecosystem jumped from 56th to 17th place (0.17% → 1.68%). Stablecoins rose from 31st to 16th place, increasing their share from 0.48% to 1.69%. Base meme coins, however, fell from 2.13% to 1.40%, moving from 11th to 19th place. Additionally, new narratives like Made in USA, DeFAI, and the World Liberty Financial portfolio attracted investor attention this year.

AI agents became one of the fastest-growing themes of the year. The DeFAI ecosystem also unexpectedly gained prominence, intensifying narrative competition in the market. Meanwhile, the RWA category experienced a noticeable decline. CoinGecko’s data shows that RWA’s share fell from 8.64% in 2024 to 4.98% in 2025, moving it from third to fourth place due to rising competition. Gaming, DePIN, and Layer-2, which were previously popular, completely dropped out of the top twenty.

Quarterly Data Confirms Meme and AI Trend Continuity

CoinGecko’s Q1 2025 data supported the annual trends. Meme coins and AI-based projects accounted for approximately 62% of total investor attention during the quarter, indicating that both narratives set the market pace from the beginning of the year.

The report shows that six meme coin categories and five AI trends ranked within the top twenty, proving that these themes are not merely short-term hype. Solana-based meme coin projects maintained strong momentum quarter over quarter, while the ecosystem around AI agents attracted a significant portion of investor flow.

Combined with the annual report, these quarterly figures confirm that meme token projects and AI narratives were the main drivers of investor behavior throughout 2025. Both community influence and technological developments continued to push these two themes to the forefront amid fragile market conditions.

In the world of crypto assets, the “buyback” strategy became highly popular in 2025, and Hyperliquid emerged as one of the leading projects in this area.

According to reports, since the beginning of 2025, Hyperliquid has spent approximately 644–645 million USD on token buybacks.

This figure represents around 46% of all token buybacks.

The number of tokens repurchased is reported to be at least 21.36 million HYPE, which corresponds to approximately 2.1% of the total token supply.

In short, while the “buyback” strategy dominates the market conversation, Hyperliquid has managed to capture a significant portion almost on its own.

Why So Fast and Massive?

There are several notable factors behind Hyperliquid’s aggressive approach:

Commitment to the revenue model
Hyperliquid directs a portion of its revenue from trading fees, derivatives volume, and spot transactions toward its buyback program. Reports indicate that a fixed percentage of the revenue generated from these activities is used to repurchase HYPE tokens.

Effort to reduce market supply pressure
The purpose of buybacks is to decrease the circulating token supply and create value for token holders. The lower the supply, the more pronounced the effect of demand can become.

High-volume trading activity
For instance, in August 2025, Hyperliquid reportedly broke records in derivative trading volume and trading fees, which in turn provided substantial funding for its buyback program.

Market Position

In terms of buybacks, the second-largest project is LayerZero, which announced spending around 150 million USD to repurchase its ZRO tokens—approximately 5% of its supply. However, this move is considered a one-time initiative, whereas Hyperliquid continues to operate a consistent and systematic buyback program.

Across the industry, since the beginning of 2025, a total of over 1.40 billion USD has been spent on token buybacks. Within this figure, Hyperliquid’s share is particularly dominant. As a result, Hyperliquid has outpaced not only its competitors but also surpassed the combined total of most other projects’ buyback expenditures.

Although this appears to be a strong move, there are some important risks investors should consider:

A solid buyback program depends on consistent revenue sources. If trading volume or fee income declines, the sustainability of buybacks could come into question.

Token supply unlocks and vesting schedules may create future selling pressure. Some reports highlight that upcoming unlocks for HYPE could pose market risks.

A buyback program alone does not guarantee price appreciation; market sentiment, overall crypto conditions, and macroeconomic factors all play significant roles.

Binance reached $2.62 trillion in futures trading volume during August, setting a new 2025 record. The figure surpassed the previous all-time high of $2.55 trillion recorded in July. This surge reflects strong market momentum and fresh capital inflows.

According to crypto analyst Arab Chain, Binance reinforced its dominance in the global derivatives market. The return of hedge funds and institutional investors played a key role in this growth. Both long and short positions increased significantly, indicating not only liquidations but also the creation of new positions. In other words, fresh participants entered the market at scale.

However, some analysts remain cautious about the sharp rise. Arab Chain warned that such momentum often precedes a correction. Still, support from spot markets and stablecoin reserves will be crucial for sustaining futures activity.

Stablecoin Growth Fuels Market Liquidity

The expansion of futures trading requires liquidity from spot markets. At this stage, stablecoin growth has become an essential driver. On August 1, the global stablecoin market cap stood at $276.2 billion. By the end of the month, it had risen 7.38%.

In early September, the market cap added another 0.65%, reaching $298 billion. This steady inflow provided much-needed liquidity to the derivatives market. As a result, futures momentum gained solid ground.

Meanwhile, analysts underline that stablecoin inflows will remain the key factor for sustainable growth. Ultimately, if capital inflows continue at this pace, a derivatives-led bull run could be on the horizon.

Institutional interest in Bitcoin continues to surge. According to a Q3 2025 market report by Blockware Intelligence, at least 36 additional public companies are expected to add Bitcoin to their balance sheets before the year ends. This marks a roughly 25% increase from the current 141 companies with Bitcoin holdings.

Bitcoin Holdings by Public Firms Up 120% in 2025

Blockware, the research arm of Blockware Solutions, reported a 120% rise in the number of publicly listed companies holding BTC in 2025 alone. Many of these firms are either new market entrants or struggling businesses looking for alternative value storage methods.

The firm explains that companies with stagnating growth find it easier to commit retained earnings to Bitcoin, targeting compound annual growth rates of 40–60% without bearing traditional operational risks.

Data from BitcoinTreasuries.net shows that MicroStrategy leads the space with 597,325 BTC, holding nearly 12 times more than the second-largest holder, mining firm MARA Holdings with 50,000 BTC.

Analysts Caution Against Over-Reliance on Bitcoin Treasury Strategy

Despite the rapid expansion, not all experts are optimistic. Glassnode’s lead analyst James Check recently warned that the window for easy gains might be closing. On July 4, he expressed doubts about the long-term viability of the Bitcoin treasury model, saying that many firms might face liquidity challenges if NAV premiums decline.

A recent report by venture capital firm Breed echoed this sentiment, stating that only a handful of companies will survive the upcoming volatility. The report added that these treasury-heavy firms could play a critical role in the next crypto downturn.

Ethereum is making a powerful return to the DeFi spotlight in 2025, thanks to the unexpected rise of automated bot activity and record-breaking stablecoin transfers.

Bots Drive $480B Stablecoin Volume on Ethereum

According to crypto platform CEX.io, 4.84 million stablecoin transfers occurred on Ethereum’s layer-1 network in May, pushing volume to a record $480 billion. The activity was largely automated, signaling a shift in how liquidity and utility are shaping the network.

Lead analyst Illia Otychenko linked the spike to reduced transaction fees in early 2025, reversing a trend of users and liquidity migrating to rival chains and layer-2 solutions. As a result, Ethereum’s mainnet saw an 11% rise in stablecoin market cap this year, while L2 networks saw only a 1% decline.

Stablecoins Shift DeFi Focus Toward Real Utility

Once criticized for MEV manipulation and sandwich attacks, bots are now credited for improving efficiency on Ethereum’s DEXs. In April, stablecoin swaps accounted for 37% of all DEX trades on Ethereum — 32% in May.

You Might Be Interested In: Elon Musk Talks About the Name of a New Memecoin!

The trend reflects a growing focus on real-world payments and stable value transfers. USDC, issued by Circle, became the most traded asset on the network — further signaling Ethereum’s shift toward being a stablecoin infrastructure layer.

Otychenko believes this isn’t a passing trend. “Speculative tokens come and go, but stablecoins stick because they solve real problems,” he said, pointing to the growing need for fast, borderless payments in emerging economies.

Challenges Remain for Ethereum’s Long-Term Lead

Despite its momentum, Ethereum faces key challenges — particularly liquidity fragmentation across layers. Otychenko emphasized that overcoming these hurdles is essential: “This isn’t just a technical issue. It’s what will decide whether Ethereum leads or lags in the next phase of adoption.”

The update will apply only to crypto transfers, leaving trading and other features unaffected.

This change reflects South Africa’s broader efforts to improve oversight of its fast-growing crypto market.
