Cyberport Expands Web3 and AI Investments

Hong Kong’s government-backed tech hub, Cyberport, is accelerating investments in Web3, blockchain, and artificial intelligence (AI) to position the city as a global technology leader.

Cyberport Aims for Global Leadership in AI and Web3

On February 27, Cyberport hosted the “AI Safety, Trust, and Responsibility” forum in collaboration with international academic institutions. The event focused on AI governance, security, and responsible innovation. Cyberport currently houses over 270 blockchain startups and more than 350 AI and big data research enterprises within its ecosystem.

Hong Kong Government’s $125 Million AI Initiative

On February 26, the Hong Kong government prioritized AI and next-generation technologies in its 2025–26 budget. Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po announced the establishment of the Hong Kong AI Research and Development Institute with a budget of HK$1 billion ($125.5 million). The institute aims to enhance AI research, accelerate R&D, and expand industry applications.

AI Supercomputing Center Expands

Cyberport’s AI Supercomputing Center (AISC), launched on December 9, 2024, will increase its computing power to 3,000 petaFLOPS, enabling 3 quintillion calculations per second. This infrastructure will drive innovation in Web3, blockchain, and AI.

Talent Development and Education Support

To advance AI research and talent development, Cyberport partnered with the World Digital Technology Academy (WDTA) to establish the WDTA Asia-Pacific Institute (Preparatory).

WDTA Executive Chairman Yale Li outlined the institute’s three core principles:

1. Developing a security-centric technology framework
2. Establishing a human-centered value system
3. Promoting responsible innovation

Cyberport has also signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with universities and institutions to enhance internship and employment opportunities for students. Additionally, the Hong Kong government allocated HK$3 billion ($385.6 million) to launch a three-year AI Subsidy Scheme supporting AI-driven innovation.

With these investments, Cyberport aims to position Hong Kong as a global hub for Web3 and AI advancements.
