Romania’s National Gambling Office (ONJN) has blacklisted leading prediction market platform Polymarket for conducting illegal gambling activities. ONJN stated that the platform operates outside state oversight and that users’ bets are unlicensed. As a result, Polymarket is no longer accessible in Romania.

Regulators emphasized that Polymarket’s “counterpart betting” model qualifies as gambling under Romanian law. ONJN President Vlad-Cristian Soare said, “This is not about technology, but about the law.” He added that whether bets are made in lei or crypto, they still fall under legal gambling requirements.

$600 Million Election Bets and Regulatory Concerns

Polymarket reported that during Romania’s presidential and local elections, users placed bets totaling more than $600 million. ONJN highlighted the platform’s lack of fiscal reporting, player protection mechanisms, and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) controls.

Although Polymarket describes itself as an “event trading” platform, users wagering on uncertain outcomes and the platform taking commissions meet all legal definitions of gambling. Romanian internet providers are now required to block access to the site.

International Regulations and Polymarket’s Future

Polymarket’s ban in Romania follows similar regulatory actions in the U.S., France, Belgium, Poland, Singapore, and Thailand. In 2022, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) fined the platform for operating unregistered derivatives markets, forcing U.S. users to be blocked.

Despite these challenges, Polymarket continues to grow. It recently secured a $2 billion investment from Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). According to Bloomberg, the platform plans to resume limited sports betting in the U.S., following the CFTC’s no-action letter that provides legal clearance for reopening.

Bullet Points – Key Legal Risks of Polymarket:

Unlicensed gambling activities

Binance has officially completed the acquisition of South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Gopax, following a two-year regulatory delay, according to local media reports. The South Korean Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) approved the change in Gopax’s key executives this week. Binance initially became Gopax’s largest shareholder in 2023 with a 67% stake.

The approval comes after prolonged concerns over potential anti-money laundering risks. Local authorities had previously postponed the full acquisition due to these issues. Resolution of Binance’s compliance challenges in the U.S., including a $4.3 billion settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Department of Justice, appears to have influenced the South Korean decision.

Strategic Importance for Binance

Gopax is one of the five South Korean exchanges authorized for cash-to-crypto transactions, requiring strict know-your-customer (KYC) and anti-money laundering (AML) compliance. Binance’s acquisition allows it to reenter one of Asia’s largest crypto markets.

Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao has shown increasing interest in South Korea and other Asian regions. South Korea’s thriving crypto ecosystem, strong talent pool, and active entrepreneurship make it a key strategic market for Binance’s blockchain and Web3 expansion.

The Gopax acquisition also comes after a 2023 withdrawal crisis. Genesis Global Capital (GGC), Gopax’s DeFi partner, froze $47 million in customer funds linked to Gopax’s GoFi product, following GGC’s Chapter 11 filing after the FTX collapse. Binance stepped in to provide liquidity and stabilize Gopax.

Market Implications

Upbit currently dominates the South Korean crypto market with over 72% market share. Binance’s return via Gopax could gradually shift market dynamics, attracting users with renewed confidence in liquidity and compliance.

BNB, Binance’s native token, has seen a one-month price surge of roughly 50%, reaching a peak of $1,370 before trading around $1,186, down 2% in the last 24 hours. Trading volume decreased by 40%, indicating moderate investor caution but overall positive market sentiment.

The acquisition underscores Binance’s commitment to regional growth and regulatory alignment, solidifying its position as a global crypto leader.

The legislation promises to solidify the country’s position as a global leader in digital assets, especially in the stablecoin sector.

Trump: “NO DELAYS, NO ADD ONS”

After the Senate passed the GENIUS (Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins) Act with a 68–30 vote, Trump posted on Truth Social urging quick House approval.

“The Senate just passed an incredible Bill that is going to make America the UNDISPUTED Leader in Digital Assets,” he wrote. “Get it to my desk, ASAP — NO DELAYS, NO ADD ONS.”

You Might Be Interested In: Elon Musk Talks About the Name of a New Memecoin!

With a narrow Republican majority in the House, the final vote is pending — but all eyes are on how swiftly it can reach Trump for final approval.

What Does The Bill Include?

The GENIUS Act aims to establish a clear regulatory framework for stablecoins, including:

Mandatory 1:1 reserve backing

State or federal-level licensing

Anti-Money Laundering compliance

Strict consumer protections

Limits on how reserves can be used (e.g., only for redemptions or low-risk Treasury investments)

These measures are designed to eliminate shadow banking risks and enhance systemic trust in dollar-backed stablecoins.

Controversy Still Looms

Although now progressing, the bill had previously failed a cloture vote in May due to Democratic concerns. Critics like Senator Elizabeth Warren accused Trump and his family of positioning to earn “hundreds of millions” from a proposed USD1 stablecoin if the law passes. Others warned against falling behind globally in crypto adoption and innovation.

A task force under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has launched an investigation into Anchorage Digital Bank, a prominent crypto firm backed by Wall Street heavyweights and aligned with former President Donald Trump’s crypto-friendly policies.

While the full scope of the investigation remains unclear, the El Dorado Task Force has reportedly reached out to former Anchorage employees to inquire about internal compliance practices. The unit focuses on dismantling global money laundering networks.

Regulatory History Raises Questions

Back in April 2022, the OCC issued a consent order against Anchorage over weak customer due diligence and anti-money-laundering (AML) controls. Anchorage responded by pledging to improve its compliance efforts and continues to operate under that consent order.

You Might Be Interested In: Elon Musk Talks About the Name of a New Memecoin!

The probe comes at a time when Anchorage is actively marketing its regulated status to lawmakers. CEO Nathan McCauley recently attended a Digital Asset Summit at the White House and has positioned himself as a vocal critic of “debanking.” His close ties with the Trump camp — including public appearances with White House crypto advisers — have raised eyebrows among regulators.

Strategic Board Appointments to Navigate Compliance!

To help manage increasing scrutiny, Anchorage has added former regulators and bankers to its board. Notable additions include Connie Shoemaker (formerly of Goldman Sachs) and Julie Williams (former OCC general counsel). Former SEC crypto investigator TuongVy Le recently stepped back from her role as general counsel.

The change applies to most EU nations and aligns with the EU’s MiCA regulation — the bloc’s first comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets, introduced in December 2024.

This policy aims to filter out unregulated actors, enhancing investor protection, but also raises concerns about compliance costs and accessibility for smaller exchanges.

Legal experts like Bitget’s Hon Ng believe the move could both strengthen trust and hinder innovation:

Mattan Erder of Orbs argues the change primarily protects Google’s legal liability, not investors.
