A massive heist that remained unreported for years has finally come to light, marking the largest cryptocurrency hack in history. According to Arkham Intelligence, Chinese mining pool LuBian was hacked in 2020, with 127,426 Bitcoin valued at approximately $3.5 billion stolen, making it the biggest crypto hack of all time.

LuBian Mining Pool Hacked in December 2020

Arkham Intelligence uncovered the hack on Saturday, revealing that the LuBian mining pool, which was the sixth-largest BTC mining pool at the time, was attacked on December 28, 2020. About 90% of its Bitcoin was stolen by hackers before the pool managed to transfer its remaining 11,886 BTC to recovery wallets. Neither LuBian nor the hackers reported the attack at the time.

You Might Be Interested In: Sonic SVM Research: Can New Stablecoins Shake Up the Old Order?

The hackers embedded OP_RETURN messages in 1,516 transactions to store wallet addresses. Arkham also noted that LuBian used a private key generation algorithm that was susceptible to brute-force attacks, which may have been the vulnerability exploited by the hackers.

The Aftermath and Crypto Security Warning

At the time of the hack, the stolen Bitcoin was worth $3.5 billion, but now, at current prices, it’s valued at around $14.5 billion. Arkham highlights this incident as a critical reminder for crypto users to implement robust private key management and security practices. The breach also serves as a warning for all cryptocurrency investors about the risks of weak algorithms and poor cybersecurity practices.

A Turning Point in Crypto Theft History

The LuBian hack surpasses the $1.5 billion ByBit hack from earlier this year, which was previously considered the largest crypto theft in history. This event, along with several other notable hacks, highlights the ever-present threats in the crypto space. In April, an elderly individual lost $330 million in Bitcoin via a social engineering attack, which was later laundered through 300 different wallet addresses.

Sometimes, speed tells more than size in crypto. Raising $500 million in stablecoins in under an hour isn’t just impressive—it’s a clear sign of growing institutional interest in the space. On June 9, blockchain project Plasma opened its stablecoin vault for deposits, and it closed before the hour mark.

At 9:00 a.m. ET, Plasma launched its raise through the ICO platform Sonar, allowing users to deposit stablecoins in exchange for the right to purchase its native token, XPL. By 9:48 a.m., the raise was complete, far surpassing the initial goal of $50 million, which represented 10% of XPL’s total supply. More than 1,100 wallets participated, each averaging around $35,000 in deposits.

First ICO on Sonar Ends in Massive Success

This fundraising event marks the first official project launch on Sonar, a new ICO platform built by Echo, the angel investment initiative created by crypto investor Cobie. Plasma’s launch through Sonar has set a high bar, showing that interest in stablecoin-based ecosystems is at an all-time high.

According to data from Arkham, the Plasma vault now holds $345 million in USDC, $146.1 million in USDT, $7.5 million in USDS, and $1.21 million in DAI.

Tether Transaction Fees? Plasma Aims for Zero

Plasma is building an EVM-compatible sidechain designed to eliminate transaction fees for Tether’s USDT. This vision has already caught investor attention: in October 2024, Bitfinex led a $3.5 million funding round, followed by a $20 million Series A raise in February 2025.

The broader surge in stablecoin interest among institutions and venture funds played a clear role in the rapid raise. With USDT currently making up 64% of all stablecoin supply, projects like Plasma are positioning themselves at the heart of future infrastructure.

Speaking to Cointelegraph, Newson said that uncovering the truth behind the April crash would require a full forensic study — similar to the one conducted after the collapse of FTX.

OTC Deals Obscure the Full Picture

In an April 15 interview with Coffeezilla, John Mullin, CEO of Mantra, admitted that the team had engaged in up to $30 million worth of OTC deals. These trades, unlike on-chain transactions, are carried out off exchanges and lack public transparency.

“The whale’s accumulation of 100 million OM tokens appears to stem from secondary market activity — not direct action by Mantra insiders,” Newson explained.

Arkham and Nansen Cannot Offer Final Answers

Mullin has denied any insider dumping, arguing that Arkham mislabelled several wallets. But Newson said that even data from Arkham or Nansen would not suffice:

“To confirm insider coordination, more than basic wallet tracing is needed. Without offchain agreements or exchange records, reaching definitive conclusions is extremely difficult.”

Audit Still Not Confirmed

Mullin said the team is considering hiring a forensic auditor, though no decision has been made yet. Mantra has asked centralized exchanges to collaborate in analyzing the incident.

Frank Weert, co-founder of Whale Alert, also noted the difficulty in obtaining complete transaction histories, even at the node level.

Users will be able to buy and sell these two digital assets on the designated markets. So, what are the details of the listing?

Jito (JTO) Listed on KRW Market

Upbit has announced that it will open trading for Jito (JTO) token on the KRW market starting from 14:30 KST on February 21, 2025. JTO will be traded on the Solana (SOL) network and can only be transferred via this network. JTO is currently trading at 0.00002857 BTC, which is equivalent to 4,163 KRW.
Arkham (ARKM) Listed on BTC and USDT Markets!

On the other hand, Arkham (ARKM) will start trading on BTC and USDT pairs. Trading will occur on the Ethereum (ETH) network. ARKM will open for trading at 17:00 KST on February 21, 2025. Currently, ARKM is trading at 0.00000681 BTC (approximately 0.6666 USDT).

Binance has announced significant changes to tokens with Monitoring Tags and Seed Tags, effective January 2, 2025. These updates are part of Binance’s strategic review process, which continuously evaluates the performance, risks, and reliability of projects listed on its platform.

Tokens to Be Added to the Monitoring Tag:

StormX (STMX): Known for micro-tasks and shopping rewards in the crypto world, STMX is being added to the Monitoring Tag list due to its volatility and risk factors.

TROY (TROY): Offering advanced broker solutions, TROY will also be included in the Monitoring Tag list.

Tokens to Be Removed from the Monitoring Tag:

Convex Finance (CVX): Renowned for its staking solutions for DeFi users, CVX will no longer carry the Monitoring Tag.

Sun (SUN): Part of the TRON ecosystem, SUN has met Binance’s criteria and will be removed from the Monitoring Tag list.

Tokens to Be Removed from the Seed Tag:

Arkham (ARKM): A pioneer in crypto intelligence, ARKM will no longer carry the early-stage Seed Tag.

Blur (BLUR): The token of the NFT trading-focused Blur platform has advanced beyond the early stage, leading to the removal of its Seed Tag.

Jito (JTO): Known for its liquidity solutions in the Solana ecosystem, JTO’s Seed Tag will also be removed.

Celestia (TIA): With its modular blockchain infrastructure, TIA has progressed significantly and will no longer carry the Seed Tag.

Why Are Monitoring and Seed Tags Important?

Monitoring Tag: Tokens with this tag exhibit higher volatility and risk compared to others. Binance reviews these projects periodically and may delist tokens that fail to meet specific criteria.

Seed Tag: This tag highlights projects that are still in the early stages, signaling that investors should trade with this awareness. The removal of a Seed Tag indicates that the project has reached a significant milestone in its development.

Binance’s Evaluation Criteria

Binance makes tagging decisions based on the following criteria:

Team Commitment: The level of dedication the team shows toward the project.

Development Activity: The quality and volume of development work on the project.

Liquidity and Trading Volume: The token’s market liquidity and trading activity.

Security: The network’s resilience against attacks and the reliability of smart contracts.

Communication and Transparency: The project’s engagement and communication with the community.

Ethical Standards: The absence of unethical behavior or misconduct.

Ecosystem Contribution: The project’s contribution to the broader crypto ecosystem.

Users who wish to trade tokens with Monitoring Tags or Seed Tags must complete a risk awareness quiz every 90 days on Binance Spot or Margin platforms. This quiz ensures traders understand the risks associated with these tokens before making trades.

Through these updates, Binance aims to promote transparency, trust, and long-term sustainability in the crypto ecosystem.

The year 2024 drew attention with the integration of Blockchain with DeSci (Decentralized Science), Artificial Intelligence, Meme Coins and Telegram bots.

2024 became a year where the strong integration of Blockchain with DeSci, artificial intelligence, Telegram bots, and meme coins stood out. DeSci made science more transparent and decentralized, while the combination of artificial intelligence and blockchain introduced innovations in automation and data security. Telegram bots provided new use cases in gaming and finance, while meme coins, by combining community-driven projects with pop culture, brought a fun breath to the crypto world.

These developments highlighted the future potential of blockchain.

2024 Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain Integration

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Blockchain gained significant momentum in 2024 as two complementary technologies. The speed and accuracy of AI in data analysis, when combined with Blockchain’s transparency and security features, has led to the creation of more efficient and reliable systems.

This integration presents significant opportunities, particularly in financial services, healthcare, and supply chain management. AI algorithms optimize data transactions conducted over Blockchain, enabling smarter decision-making processes.

In 2024, several prominent AI projects made significant strides in integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) with blockchain technology. Here are some notable examples:

NEAR: Launched in 2020, NEAR is a blockchain platform supporting dApp development with high transaction volume and low fees. In 2024, it integrated AI, introducing an open-source AI model with 1.4 trillion parameters and the NEAR Intents feature. With a market cap of $6.7 billion, it leads among AI-powered crypto projects.

Fetch.ai: The Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) Alliance was founded in 2024 by Fetch.ai, SingularityNET, and Ocean Protocol, aiming to develop decentralized AGI and ASI. The FET, AGIX, and OCEAN tokens will be merged to create the ASI token. Fetch.ai, with a market cap of $3.3 billion, is among the top 50 cryptocurrencies.

Arkham: This blockchain analysis platform enhances transparency by de-anonymizing blockchain transactions. Using AI, it links blockchain addresses to real-world assets. The ARKM token provides access to platform services and is used on Intel Exchange. Launched in 2023, it reached a market cap of $626 million with a token price of $1.99 in 2024.

io.net: A decentralized network providing cost-effective GPU power for AI and machine learning (ML) applications. In 2024, it partnered with Zero1 Labs and secured $30 million in investment, reaching a $1 billion valuation. The IO token facilitates transactions within the ecosystem.

Render: A decentralized GPU rendering platform that collaborated with Stability AI and OTOY in 2024 to develop AI-driven rendering services. The RENDER token facilitates transactions and rewards GPU providers. By November 2024, it reached a market cap of $4.1 billion.

These projects highlight the growing intersection of AI and blockchain, showcasing their potential to transform various industries with decentralized, secure, and efficient solutions.

Another Trend of 2024 Is Telegram Bots

Telegram, with millions of users worldwide, continued to host Blockchain projects in 2024. Telegram bots have become tools that provide users with easy access to Blockchain applications.

In 2024, “tap-to-earn” games on Telegram allowed users to earn cryptocurrency by actively playing. Notable games included Notcoin, Hamster Kombat, and Catizen, offering opportunities to earn tokens such as $NOT, $DOGS, $HMSTR, and $CATI. These games operated on various blockchain networks, including The Open Network (TON) and Solana, facilitating token integration and decentralized transactions.

As this trend gained popularity, major cryptocurrency exchanges like Binance, OKX, Bitget, and KuCoin also joined in.

The Memecoin Frenzy That Shaped 2024

Memecoins are cryptocurrencies inspired by internet memes, with Dogecoin being the pioneer in this space. Created as a joke in 2013, Dogecoin quickly transformed into a serious investment asset with the support of its community. The influence of social media, especially by celebrities like Elon Musk, led to the rapid rise of Dogecoin and other coins like Shiba Inu (SHIB).

Meme coins represent the fun side of the cryptocurrency market while highlighting the impact of community movements and popular culture on financial markets.

According to a CoinGecko study, meme coins have captured nearly a third of investor interest in the cryptocurrency space this year, becoming one of the most attention-grabbing topics.

CoinGecko research analyst Lim Yu Qian noted in a report dated December 23rd that between January 1st and December 21st, meme coins and related categories attracted 31% of investor interest. These coins experienced significant gains and losses throughout the year, while Bitcoin saw a 123% increase in value in 2024.

These tokens are typically high-risk with short-term volatility, but some experienced investors managed to secure quick profits.

Despite fluctuating popularity, the most popular meme coins remained Dogecoin (DOGE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB), with coins like PEPE, Bonk, Pengu, WIF, and Floki also joining the trend and catching the attention of investors.

DeSci: A Decentralized Revolution in the World of Science

Decentralized Science (DeSci) is an approach that aims to make science more transparent, community-driven, and accessible through blockchain technology. Focusing on principles of transparency, decentralization, incentives, and collaboration, DeSci ensures broader access to scientific data, enhances the reliability of research, and promotes collaborations.

With blockchain, data is securely stored, while DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations) decentralize decision-making processes. IP-NFTs (Intellectual Property Non-Fungible Tokens) enable researchers to retain control over the ownership of their work and commercialize it. By lowering the barriers to entry in science, DeSci fosters greater collaboration, accessibility, and transparency in the research ecosystem.

Decentralized Science (DeSci) gained significant momentum with Binance’s announcement to launch Bio Protocol (BIO) on its Launchpool. This development has given a substantial boost to the DeSci ecosystem, highlighting the growing market interest in decentralized scientific solutions. The introduction of Bio Protocol demonstrates the strengthening integration of blockchain technology in science and research fields.

Furthermore, it aims to decentralize funding and data sharing processes. With Bio Protocol ($BIO) leading the way, the DeSci sector is rapidly expanding, and the rise of projects like $URO and $RIF clearly showcases the market’s confidence and excitement in the transformative potential of DeSci.
