Non-Playable Coin (NPC) is a memecoin launched on Ethereum, designed for all 8+ billion humans on Earth. With the motto “I support the current coin,” it pays homage to the non-playable character meme popularized in 2018. The original meme has been redesigned, and everything is open source. NPC introduces an innovative hybrid model combining memecoin and NFT; each NPC token is backed by the NPC meme’s NFT. This makes NPC tradable on both Uniswap-like DEXs and NFT marketplaces like OpenSea. In this article, we will explore the origins, vision, and opportunities of Non-Playable Coin in detail.

What is Non-Playable Coin (NPC)?

The unexpected rise of NFTs in 2021 was led by collections like Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) with 10,000 supply. CryptoPunks, the first to do so in 2017, were rediscovered and became the gold standard. Many 10,000-supply NFT collections like Cool Cats, Pudgy Penguins, Azuki, and Doodles emerged, built using the ERC721 token standard, making each NFT unique and distinguishable. This standard ensured NFT uniqueness but increased costs for bulk sending or trading, limited collection sizes due to gas constraints, and established the 10,000-supply norm. This made collections overly exclusive and expensive, sidelining most people and capping community growth at ~10,000 unique owners. High-supply Ethereum NFT collections were not feasible with ERC721, causing pfp collections to become stale due to limited customization and variety. By 2023, NFT prices and interest had completely collapsed.

NPC is a memecoin based on one of the internet’s most popular memes. It is a memecoin-NFT hybrid, convertible 1:1 via a dApp. Designed for every human on Earth, NPC can be traded on Uniswap and ERC1155-supported NFT marketplaces (OpenSea, Sudoswap) with tickers NPC (memecoin) and NPCMFT (NFT). NPC is a memecoin backed by its meme’s NFT; it is meme-backed money, the first memecoin-NFT hybrid, and a meme-fungible token (MFT).

Purpose of Non-Playable Coin (NPC)

Non-Playable Coin, built on the NPC meme, bridges memecoin and NFT markets in a simple way. Meme-fungible tokens (MFTs) enable unique trading on NFT marketplaces and Uniswap. NPC trades as a memecoin on DEXs (ticker NPC) and as a JPEG on ERC1155-supported NFT marketplaces (ticker NPCMFT). Holding NPCMFT or NPC is the same; they are always convertible 1:1. 1 NPCMFT = 1 NPC.

The fun begins with customization: the app.npc.com dApp allows users to customize their NPC using community-designed traits. With 220+ unique traits, there are enough combinations for every human on Earth. Non-Playable Customs is the official PFP collection of the NPC community, created via app.npc.com. A limited supply of 155,443 custom NPCs (equal to the number of $PEPE holders as of 5:00 PM UTC, February 15, 2024) was minted on Base, each symbolically costing 1 NPC, which was burned. Non-Playable Customs fully minted out on August 20, 2024.

Meme-fungible tokens (MFTs) definition: A token type holding JPEG metadata, convertible on Uniswap-like DEXs. MFTs are high-supply, liquid JPEGs; they are JPEGs that trade like memecoins. MFTs can switch between NFT (ERC1155) for marketplaces and memecoin (ERC20) for Uniswap; their value is identical, converted via a wrapper.

ERC11: Believing memecoin-NFT hybrids are the future of memecoins, developers and the community codified a deployable, audited token standard combining ERC20 and ERC1155. ERC11 is a new standard for memecoin developers, launching “memecoins 2.0” with Non-Playable Coin. ERC11 enables media-embedded memecoins to trade on Uniswap.

Unique use cases with ERC11: Memecoins are no longer symbolic; trading an ERC11 token means trading culture. Non-Playable Coin developers released proof-of-concepts (experiMINTs) for inspiration: Biden v. Trump (two-sided memecoin; one side Trump NFT, the other Biden memecoin), Groge (memecoin backed by a song for gray Doge), Lil NPC – 4EVA GRAY (backed by an NPC trap song), NPC: The Game (memecoin backed by a video game, playable as an NFT). Note: All experiMINTs are infinite mint and have no financial value.

How Non-Playable Coin (NPC) Works

NPC is designed for unique trading on both NFT marketplaces and Uniswap. MFTs enable this dual trading. NPC trades as a memecoin on DEXs like Uniswap (ticker NPC) and as a JPEG on ERC1155-supported NFT marketplaces (ticker NPCMFT). Holding NPCMFT or NPC is identical; they are 1:1 convertible. The Transform dApp enables: RESPAWN (convert NPC to NPCMFT), TRANSFORM (convert NPCMFT to NPC). This is done with low gas costs at npc.com/transform. Non-Playable Coin bridges NFT and memecoin markets.

Customization: Create NPCs with 220+ traits via the app.npc.com dApp; endless combinations are possible. Non-Playable Customs is a limited 155,443-piece collection on Base, fully minted out on August 20, 2024. Each mint symbolically cost 1 NPC, which was burned.

The ERC11 standard combines ERC20 and ERC1155, enabling media-embedded memecoins to trade on Uniswap, launching memecoins 2.0.

Non-Playable Coin (NPC) Tokenomics

NPC tokenomics are simple and intuitive. On July 29, 2023, the total human population was recorded on-chain. Total supply: 8,050,126,520. This includes both NPC (ERC20) and NPCMFT (ERC1155) in circulation.

Fair launch: Everything is on the market; 99% of NPC tokens were sent to the Uniswap liquidity pool, with the remaining 1% added to NFT marketplaces. LP tokens are locked until 6969 for future civilizations, and the contract is renounced.

Zero transaction tax: As every NPC knows, taxes are only for governments.

No utility: No promises of BS utility or intrinsic value; it’s purely a memecoin for every human on Earth.

Multichain: Ethereum, Solana, Base, BNB Chain.

Non-Playable Coin (NPC) Team

Non-Playable Coin is community-driven with no formal team. Developers and the community together codified the ERC11 standard. Everything is open source; there is no roadmap. The project is managed as an entertainment-focused art experiment.

Significant activity was observed in the Ethereum NFT market last week. Trading volume reached a three-month high of $186 million, marking a 67% increase compared to the previous week’s $111 million volume.

The Role of Pudgy Penguins and the $PENGU Token Launch

The primary driver behind this surge was the $PENGU token launch by the Pudgy Penguins collection. The collection garnered attention with a trading volume of $108 million. Prior to the launch, NFTs in the collection traded above 29 ETH, but prices saw a sharp decline following the token distribution.

The token distribution was not limited to Pudgy Penguins NFT holders but aimed at a broader audience. Wallets on the Ethereum and Solana networks were selected based on eligibility criteria, enabling them to benefit from the token. This approach adopted a more inclusive strategy, targeting not just existing collection holders but also active investors and community members within these two major ecosystems.

Activity in the Azuki and Doodles Collections

The speculative interest generated by the $PENGU launch also impacted other popular NFT collections. Azuki and Doodles recorded trading volumes of $23 million and $17 million, respectively.

Ethereum continues to maintain its dominance as the leading platform for high-value NFT trading and new market developments. Although Bitcoin remains the second-largest ecosystem in the NFT space, it recorded a trading volume of only $33 million last week, significantly trailing Ethereum. This highlights Ethereum’s continued status as the most preferred network for NFT trading.
