In 2023, US Bitcoin firms faced a major supply chain issue when thousands of Bitcoin mining rigs were held at US Customs and Border Protection. Some believed it was due to a misconception that the chips contained illegal Chinese radio frequency devices.

Trade Tensions Disrupt Bitcoin Mining Supply Chain

According to Gupta, US-China trade tensions have significantly disrupted the flow of foreign Bitcoin miners.

“These trade tensions have caused delays and uncertainty for many hardware shipments,” Gupta explained, adding that the ongoing US-China rivalry in high-end chip manufacturing has further intensified these challenges for US-based crypto miners.

Meanwhile, Bitmain expanded its production into the US in December 2023 to improve supply chain efficiency.

Auradine Could Benefit from Trump’s Onshore Manufacturing Push

Auradine sees Trump’s plan to increase onshore manufacturing as an opportunity. Gupta noted that a dramatic increase in electricity demand would put pressure on the US power grid, making it more important for Bitcoin miners to operate off-grid.

The company recently launched its Teraflux AH3880 hydro-cooled Bitcoin miner, competing directly with Bitmain, MicroBT, and Canaan.

Could US Bitcoin Mining Growth Impact Decentralization?

When asked about Bitcoin decentralization, Gupta stated that securing the network with more energy-efficient solutions in the US is a net positive. However, he acknowledged that if Bitcoin mining growth outpaces technological advancements in sustainability and decentralization, it could pose risks.

According to Hashrate Index, over 95% of Bitcoin’s global hash power currently comes from the US and China.

Despite reports of the releases, Luxor Technology COO Ethan Vera confirmed that only a small portion of the detained miners had been cleared. Authorities reportedly raised concerns about radio frequency emissions, but both Vera and Kulyk dismissed these claims as baseless.

As the US government tightens restrictions on Chinese imports, Donald Trump’s administration has imposed a 10% tariff on Chinese goods. In response, Bitmain has been working to expand its production facilities in the United States to avoid further shipping delays.

Phoenix Group, the rising star of Bitcoin mining in recent times, signed an important agreement with Bitmain, the device manufacturer. The agreement included a purchase of $187 million worth of devices.

In its statement, Bitmain did not specify the launch timeline for the new mining equipment based on Aleo.

The planned launch of Bitmain’s Aleo-based mining devices drew public attention after the company made an internal announcement in September due to reported cash flow issues with paying staff salaries. According to crypto reporter Colin Wu, the company has made progress in repaying salaries.

Nevertheless, Bitmain appears to be making progress in other areas. In September, Bitmain launched its latest Antminer S21 model, and some miners expressed interest in purchasing these new machines. For example, CleanSpark, an American Bitcoin miner listed on Nasdaq, announced it had purchased 4.4 exahash per second of S21 mining machines.

Bitmain also announced plans to invest $54 million in Core Scientific, a bankrupt Bitcoin mining company. Bitmain operates as a firm that designs and produces application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chips for Bitcoin mining, and also manages Antpool, one of the largest crypto mining pools in the world.
