While global finance evolves rapidly, the crypto sector is entering a new phase—one driven by high-stakes acquisitions and strategic expansions. Leading this transformation is Robinhood, which has just made a bold move to deepen its crypto footprint worldwide.

The US-based trading platform has completed its $200 million all-cash acquisition of Bitstamp, one of the longest-operating crypto exchanges in the world. With this move, Robinhood gains not only market reach but also key regulatory advantages and institutional infrastructure.

Gateway To Europe And Asia

Announced on June 2, the acquisition adds over 50 licenses and a strong institutional client base to Robinhood’s growing crypto division. Bitstamp serves more than 5,000 institutional clients and 50,000 retail users, with most of its trading activity coming from institutional players.

You Might Be Interested In: Elon Musk Talks About the Name of a New Memecoin!

The acquisition significantly extends Robinhood’s crypto services beyond the US into key markets across Europe, the UK, and Asia. Bitstamp is already integrated with Robinhood’s Legend platform and Smart Exchange Routing system, streamlining cross-border access and performance.

Tokenization: The Next Big Move

CEO Vladimir Tenev said Robinhood’s next strategic goal in crypto is tokenization of real-world assets. He highlighted that making private equities like OpenAI and SpaceX investable via tokenized shares could revolutionize liquidity in secondary markets.

Robinhood also continues to explore further acquisitions, including the recently announced deal with Canadian crypto platform WonderFi for $179 million.

With a forward-looking strategy and strong financials, Robinhood is positioning itself not just as a trading app, but as a global crypto powerhouse.

BTC achieved its highest daily close in history on December 11, with six-figure price action making a strong comeback.

BTC/USDT Daily Chart

BTC/USD recently closed its daily candle at around $101,200. On Bitstamp, this matched the December 8th close, marking the highest recorded closing so far.

Bulls have managed to move away from the local lows of $94,000 seen earlier in the week. “The crucial level in Bitcoin is still defined,” said trader, analyst, and entrepreneur Michaël van de Poppe in his latest analysis on X.

“If the markets stay above that area, it’s likely that we’ll see new ATH’s in the coming days.”

Will Bitcoin Set a New ATH?

BTC/USDT 4-hour chart with RSI data. Source: Michaël van de Poppe/X

Market observers commenting noted that market stability has continued alongside Bitcoin’s recent journey to $100,000 and beyond.

“Bitcoin quietly achieved its highest daily close ever,” wrote Charles Edwards, founder of the quantitative Bitcoin and digital asset fund Capriole Investments, in a December 12th X post.

“Meanwhile funding rates are below normal, leverage still wiped and ETFs are seeing day after day of relentless inflows.”

Edwards referred to the clearing of leveraged positions resulting from the sudden market volatility seen this week and last.

Short positions felt the pressure during the rebound, and according to data from CoinGlass, 24-hour crypto liquidations reached a total of $270 million at the time of writing.

Bitcoin Futures Basis Comparison. Source: Zaheer Ebtikar/X

Zaheer Ebtikar, co-founder of the crypto fund Split Capital, shared additional data supporting the lack of excessive market risk. He noted that while Bitcoin approaches all-time highs, the futures basis remains unusually low.

Zaheer Ebtikar wrote, “I can’t explain to you how absolutely insane this image is.”

He shared this with his X followers, alongside an explanatory chart. The futures basis refers to the difference between spot and futures market prices, measured as a percentage of the spot price.

In Bitcoin bull markets, when all-time highs are reached, this difference can reach 30% or more, reflecting increased speculation about future BTC price growth.

Ripple CEO stated that RLUSD will “soon be active on exchanges” following the approval from the New York Department of Financial Services.

Ripple Labs CEO Brad Garlinghouse announced that the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) has approved the company’s RLUSD stablecoin after months of evaluation.

In a post on X on December 10, Garlinghouse stated that following the NYDFS approval, Ripple will soon announce exchange and partner listings for RLUSD. The company had launched plans for this stablecoin in April, positioning it as a competitor to Tether’s USDT and Circle’s USD Coin.

Brad GarlingHouse’s tweet:

Ripple executives have predicted that the stablecoin could reach a market value of $2 trillion by 2028.

The company began testing RLUSD in August on the XRP ledger and Ethereum mainnet, and in October, it announced partnerships with exchanges such as Uphold, Bitstamp, Bitso, MoonPay, Independent Reserve, CoinMENA, and Bullish.

In September, Garlinghouse mentioned that Ripple planned to focus RLUSD on institutional players. As of December 10, the combined market value of USDT and USDC was recorded at approximately $180 billion.

How will Ripple manage both XRP and RLUSD?

Like other USD stablecoins, RLUSD will be pegged 1:1 to the US Dollar.

In April, Ripple announced plans to back the tokens with USD deposits, short-term US Treasury bonds, and “other cash-like assets.”

In June, Ripple President Monica Long stated that RLUSD would be “complementary and additive” to XRP.

Garlinghouse appeared in a 60 Minutes segment aired on December 8, discussing the cryptocurrency industry’s influence on the 2024 United States elections.

Ripple is also engaged in an ongoing legal battle with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regarding XRP token offerings.

Mt. Gox, a defunct crypto exchange that collapsed after an attack in 2014. Gox’s customers will start receiving payments this Thursday, marking a major milestone in a decade-long wait.

Bitstamp’s Mt. Gox Revenues Key Details

– Distribution Start Date: Mt. Gox customers will start receiving their funds on Thursday.
– Fund Types: Distributions include Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Bitcoin Cash (BCH).
– Source of Funds: According to an email from crypto exchange Bitstamp, the funds were transferred to Mt. Gox was removed from the board of trustees.
– Regional Exclusions: UK customers will not be included in the initial distribution group.

This development took place at a time when creditors have been eagerly awaiting the return of their assets for nearly a decade. The staggered distribution of these funds is being closely monitored by the crypto community, given the potential impact on market dynamics.

The distribution process raised concerns about a possible sell-off that could affect the market. However, previous distributions by exchanges such as Kraken have shown that many creditors may choose to hold on to their assets rather than sell them immediately, potentially mitigating significant market disruptions.

Overall, Mt. Gox trustees marks a long-awaited decision for many creditors, the crypto community remains wary of possible market impacts as distributions begin.

Leading the cryptocurrency payments scene, Ripple made news for selling its Bitstamp and Tranglo interests, as recorded on Crunchbase. The decision by Ripple might have been influenced by Robinhood’s recent $200 million acquisition of Bitstamp. This differs from Ripple’s past approach since it bought Bitstamp to increase its global presence outside of conventional payment methods.

Many also found it shocking that Ripple’s leaving Tranglo. Ripple keeps a 40% share in the cross-border payment platform, which uses XRP for liquidity, even with the divestiture, and lists Tranglo as a partner. This has prompted professionals like Crypto Eri to demand more transparency on the particulars of this departure.

The market reaction of XRP to these major developments was rather subdued. Trading around $0.532, bitcoin enjoyed a small 2% price rise. Still, after recent profit-taking, trade volume dropped noticeably by 45%. Fascinatingly, the overall open interest in XRP futures showed a little rise, suggesting a cautiously positive investor perspective.

The fintech community has paid close attention to this choice to sell shares, and worries about Ripple’s future approach have been generated. Although the company’s significant Bitcoin holdings have been beneficial, these latest actions point to a possible change in emphasis or a response to the changing environment of markets.

The German government has continued its streak of selling seized Bitcoin, offloading another 1,300 BTC to major cryptocurrency exchanges Coinbase, Kraken, and Bitstamp. This news comes amidst a recent downturn in the Bitcoin price, raising concerns of a potential market impact.

Details of the Bitcoin Liquidation

Total Amount Sold: 1,300 BTC (approximately $76.5 million based on current market value)

Exchange Breakdown:

Bitstamp: 500 BTC ($29.95 million)

Coinbase: 400 BTC ($23.24 million)

Kraken: 400 BTC ($23.24 million)

Bitcoin Price Dip: The Bitcoin price fell below $58,000 shortly after the news of the sale.

Adding to the intrigue, the German government also transferred a separate 1,700 BTC (approximately $98.76 million) to an unknown wallet. This move sparks speculation of a potential further selloff, as similar transfers preceded previous exchange dumps.

With this latest sale, the German government has now liquidated nearly 10,000 BTC, bringing its total holdings down to approximately 40,359 BTC (valued at $2.32 billion).

Robinhood plans to acquire Bitstamp in a $200 million deal, which is expected to close in the first half of 2025. This acquisition will bring Bitstamp‘s crypto exchange to Robinhood, along with retail and institutional customers in the EU, UK, US and Asia.

This cash deal, designed to better position its expansion outside the U.S., is expected to close in the first half of 2025, subject to customary closing conditions—including regulatory approvals—Robinhood said.

The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, and its rival KuCoin, have been registered with India’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), according to a CoinDesk report. This marks a significant development for the Indian crypto market, as it’s the first time offshore crypto-related entities have received approval from the country’s anti-money laundering unit.

KuCoin Settles Penalty, Resumes Operations

KuCoin has already settled its compliance proceedings with the FIU by paying a $41,000 penalty. This has allowed them to resume operations in India.

Binance, on the other hand, has yet to resume operations. The exchange is currently undergoing a hearing with the FIU to determine its financial penalty. Once the penalty amount is finalized, Binance will be able to complete its compliance process and re-enter the Indian market.

Previous Ban Lifted

This news comes after Binance and KuCoin were among several offshore cryptocurrency exchanges banned by India in December 2023. Other banned entities included Huobi, Kraken, Gate.io, Bittrex, Bitstamp, MEXC Global, and Bitfinex.

Bitstamp, the leading European cryptocurrency exchange, has received in-principle approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). This significant milestone makes Bitstamp the first crypto exchange with a major European Union (EU) presence to secure such approval in Singapore.

The approval paves the way for Bitstamp to obtain a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license, enabling the exchange to provide digital payment token services in the Southeast Asian city-state. This development was announced via email on Wednesday.

Bitstamp’s entry into the Singapore market marks a significant expansion of its services in Asia. The company’s primary focus in Singapore will be on catering to financial institutions and intermediaries, including payments processors, fintech companies, and brokerages.

Notably, the last crypto exchange to achieve full licensing in Singapore was Upbit, a South Korean firm, which obtained its MPI license in January. Upbit received its in-principal approval approximately three and a half months prior to being granted the full license.
