The world’s largest crypto gathering, TOKEN2049 Singapore, has officially begun. Taking over the entire Marina Bay Sands venue, the first day delivered a wave of announcements and strategic moves that signal where the industry is heading next.

What Happened on the First Day of TOKEN2049?

Maelstrom Launches Private Equity Arm: “Maelstrom Equity”

Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX, used the stage at TOKEN2049 to unveil a new division under his family office: Maelstrom Equity. For the first time, the firm will accept external institutional capital, targeting both majority and minority stakes in crypto and crypto-adjacent companies.

With a focus on businesses facing liquidity challenges or those primed for transformational growth, Maelstrom is expanding beyond venture and liquid markets into buyouts and growth equity. This move positions the firm to play a pivotal role in reshaping mature verticals within the crypto ecosystem.

KuCoin Rebrands With a New Identity: “Trust First. Trade Next.”

Global exchange KuCoin introduced its refreshed brand identity at TOKEN2049, centered around the principle “Trust First. Trade Next.”

Originally launched in 2017 as “the crypto exchange for everyone,” KuCoin now positions itself as “the crypto partner you can trust.” The updated visual identity reflects its core ethos of security, transparency, and accessibility, aiming to reinforce trust during periods of market volatility while strengthening its global appeal.

MEXC Ventures Commits $30M to Ethena’s ENA

Another key headline from Day One came from MEXC Ventures, which announced its second strategic investment in ENA, the governance token of the Ethena protocol. This brings its total commitment to $30 million.

When combined with a previous $16 million investment and a $20 million USDe acquisition, MEXC’s total exposure to the Ethena ecosystem now stands at $66 million. According to Cecilia Hsueh, Chief Strategy Officer at MEXC, the firm’s approach extends far beyond capital deployment, aiming to integrate operational synergies and project-level support to accelerate ecosystem growth.

Tether Gold (XAUt) Goes Live on Celo

Tether Gold (XAUt) has officially launched on the Celo network, expanding access to tokenized gold across more than 150 countries.

The addition complements Celo’s existing integration of USDT, which has already been used in over 119 million transactions as a gas currency. With XAUt now live, users within the Celo ecosystem gain seamless access to one of the oldest stores of value, bridging traditional assets with blockchain infrastructure.

Celo Introduces Nightfall Privacy Layer for Enterprise Payments

The Celo Foundation also announced the deployment of Nightfall, an open-source zero-knowledge privacy layer built by EY. Now live as a Layer 3 on Celo, Nightfall represents the first time a payments-focused blockchain has adopted this technology.

Nightfall leverages ZK proofs and ZK-ZK rollups to deliver private, auditable transactions at a fraction of traditional costs. The solution is designed for B2B payments, supply chain finance, and other enterprise use cases where confidentiality and efficiency are mission-critical.

A Strong Start to a Landmark Event!

Even on its first day, TOKEN2049 demonstrated why it remains the epicenter of the crypto world. From major equity announcements and rebranding strategies to significant investments and technical innovations, the event is shaping the conversation around both the current state and future trajectory of digital assets.

As the week continues, participants can expect even more high-profile panels, product launches, and strategic collaborations. TOKEN2049 has once again proven to be more than just a conference—it is where the next chapter of the crypto industry is written.

Grayscale has revealed its expectations for the fourth quarter and released its list of the top 20 altcoins, adding 6 new tokens.

In its report for Q4 2024, Grayscale highlighted 20 altcoins with growth potential, taking into account market trends and key factors specific to each token. The list now includes 6 new altcoins: SUI, TAO, OP, HNT, CELO, and UMA. However, RENDER, MNT, RUNE, PENDLE, ILV, and RAY have been removed from the previous list.

According to Grayscale, the altcoins with high potential for the fourth quarter are as follows:

Bitcoin (BTC)

Ethereum (ETH)

Solana (SOL)

Toncoin (TON)

Chainlink (LINK)

Near (NEAR)

Uniswap (UNI)

Sui (SUI)

Bittensor (TAO)

Stacks (STX)

Aave (AAVE)

Optimism (OP)

Arweave (AR)

Maker (SKY)

Helium (HNT)

Lido DAO (LDO)

Akash Network (AKT)

Aerodrome (AERO)

Celo (CELO)

UMA Protocol (UMA)

Additionally, it was stated, “This quarter, we have removed the following projects from the Top 20: Celo. Grayscale Research continues to value each of these projects, and they remain important elements of the crypto ecosystem. However, we believe the revised Top 20 list may offer more attractive risk-adjusted returns for the upcoming quarter.

Investing in the crypto asset class involves risks, including some unique to the crypto space, such as smart contract vulnerabilities and regulatory uncertainty. Furthermore, all assets in the Top 20 have high volatility and carry high risks, making them unsuitable for all investors. In light of the risks associated with the asset class, any investment in digital assets should be considered within the context of a portfolio and with the investor’s financial goals in mind.”

The cryptographic investment company Grayscale has recently released its report on the outlook for the fourth quarter of 2024. It reveals the cryptocurrencies with the greatest potential in October, November and December, In addition to this, it provides insight on perspective shift and advancements in this industry. Grayscale has revised the list that was provided in the previous quarter: some coins were added while some were excluded; 6 are new now.

Among the lately added cryptocurrencies are SUI, TAO, OP, HNT, CELO, and UMA. Dropped off the list instead were RENDER, MNT, Rune, PENDLE, ILV, and RAY. These projects mirror Grayscale’s changing view on bitcoin projects and present market dynamics.

The research offers some innovative project concepts. Designed for instance by former Meta engineers, Sui is a third-generation blockchain. Following a recent upgrade enhancing Solana’s transaction speed by 80%, Sui’s network consumption has skyrocketed, exceeding Solana in this respect and ensuring a good list ranking.

Another effort bringing about transformation is optimism since it provides a solution for Ethereum’s scalability issues. Its execution in well-known initiatives including Sam Altman’s Worldcoins project and Coinbase’s Layer 2 network Base has inspired future hope.

The book also notes UMA and Celo. While UMA offers a distributed oracle network for prediction markets like as Polymarket, Celo specializes on stablecoins and payment systems in emerging nations. Particularly thankful of Opera’s MiniPay function; Celo has lately been rather popular in Africa and consumes more stablecoins than Tron.

Helium made the list under its direction in the DePIN area and with high reputation for sustainable income source. Helium’s over a million access points and 100,000 mobile customers reinforce its position in the market given more than $2 million in network fees.

Among efforts at the junction of artificial intelligence and cryptocurrencies, Bittensor stands out in trying to provide a distributed platform for artificial intelligence innovation. Its listing shows Grayscale’s awareness of evolving market structure as well as the expanding influence of artificial intelligence on the crypto scene.

Extensive research by Grayscale provides investors with a road map and perceptive analysis of which projects might take front stage in the future months.

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has recognized the Celo blockchain for surpassing Tron in daily active stablecoin addresses, marking a significant milestone in stablecoin adoption. On September 25, Buterin praised Celo for this achievement, noting how it aligns with Ethereum’s mission to improve global access to financial services and payments.

Celo’s Alfajores testnet is set to upgrade to Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) on September 26, as part of Celo’s transition from a standalone Layer 1 (L1) blockchain to an Ethereum-integrated L2 solution. This shift is a major step for Celo, bringing it closer to the Ethereum ecosystem and allowing for improved interoperability and network capabilities.

In July 2023, Celo’s core developer, cLabs, proposed this move, and the platform now operates two L2 testnets, Alfajores and Dango. The transition will enhance Celo’s compatibility with Ethereum while retaining its own unique attributes, like its independent blockchain wallet systems.

Might interest you: Flappy Bird Might Launch Play To Earn Token!

Celo has gained significant attention in 2024 due to its growing integration with major stablecoins. Circle, the operator of USDC, launched support for USDC on Celo in February 2024, while Tether integrated its USDT stablecoin in March. As of September 25, $209 million of Celo-based USDT tokens are in circulation.

Celo’s success in stablecoin adoption is largely driven by applications like Minipay and Valora. Minipay, which launched in 2023, quickly reached 3 million active wallets by mid-2024, contributing to Celo surpassing Tron in daily active stablecoin addresses, according to blockchain data provider Artemis.xyz. Celo’s integration with Ethereum further strengthens its place within the larger crypto ecosystem, empowering developers and users with enhanced capabilities.

In a first significant step toward its intended joining the Ethereum ecosystem, Celo, the mobile-first Layer 1 blockchain, has launched its Dango Layer 2 testnet.

After voting last July to turn its Layer 1 network into an Ethereum Layer 2 chain, Celo is EVM-compatible. After eight months of research, the Celo community opted to combine Base, Zora, Mode, and other Ethereum Layer 2 networks with Optimism’s Stack, therefore joining Optimism’s so-called “Superchain” ecosystem.

This Might Interest You: ElevenLabs Launches AI Tool for Clear Audio

Bridging tokens between Ethereum and Celo will soon be simpler, even if users of native USDT and USDC stablecoins can keep using them for gas charges on the new network. Based on Celo’s announcement, transactions will also be speedier; a 50% increase in throughput and a drop in block time from 5 seconds to 2 seconds will help to explain this.

Celo core developer cLabs CTO Marek Olszewski remarked last year, “For most EVM-compatible chains, it’s increasingly hard to justify a standalone positioning in a market where the Ethereum scaling roadmap is proving itself.”

According to the statement, the Celo crew expects a mainnet launch in “early winter 2024.”

Tether, the world’s largest stablecoin issuer, has announced it will be leaving two altcoin networks.

USDT developer Tether will only support protocols that the USDT “community finds useful” going forward.

According to a statement made by Tether, the company will no longer provide support for the EOS and Algorand networks.

In line with this, Tether will stop issuing USDT on the EOS and Algorand networks as of June 24.

Tether stated, “We will continue to support protocols and chains that the community finds useful and encourage the community to increase USDT’s use cases on all protocols.”

How will the process proceed?

USDT users on the EOS and Algorand networks will be able to redeem their funds for 12 months.

Tether said, “We promise our community that this process will be carried out with care and minimal disruption.”

With the withdrawal from the EOS and Algorand networks, Tether now only operates on the Avalanche, Celo, Kava, Ethereum, Liquid Network, NEAR, Polkadot, Solana, Tezos, TON and Tron networks.

A significant portion of USDT, with a total market capitalization of $112.75 billion, is issued on the Tron and Ethereum networks.

Tether had also stopped providing USDT services on the Bitcoin, Kusama, and Bitcoin Cash networks last year.

Cryptocurrency analysts have determined the altcoin networks that developers have been working on the most this week. Here is the full list.

This week, there was a general downward trend for Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies.

Data shows that the altcoin with the highest number of developers, by far, is Ethereum with 2,498 people. Polkadot is in second place with 839 developers, followed by Polygon with 836 developers.

Cosmos is in fourth place with 754 developers, and Arbitrum is in fifth place with 615 developers.

While the number of developers is an important metric, it is also important to consider how much these developers are working on the respective altcoins. According to the data, Ethereum was again the altcoin with the most code changes made by developers in the past week, with 16,430 commits. Polkadot is in second place with 5,226 commits, similar to its ranking in terms of the number of developers.

BNB Chain is in third place with 4,957 commits, despite its lower ranking in terms of the number of developers.

Cosmos is in fourth place with 4,680 commits, and Polygon is in fifth place with 4,626 commits.

Other altcoins in the top ten include Optimism, Arbitrum, NEAR, Celo, and Kusama.

Ethereum layer-2 network Celo revealed on May 29 the CCIP protocol integration for cross-chain interoperability.

Following the deployment of CCIP on Celo, Eric Nakagawa, the executive director of Celo, said, “Canonical cross-chain infrastructure can accelerate the long-term growth and adoption of the Celo ecosystem.” “As the only interoperability solution achieving level 5 cross-chain security, CCIP provides a great option for developers, founders, and the wider community to consider and adopt, Nakagawa said.”

As real-world asset tokenization is expected to be the next major area for expansion, cross-chain interoperability remains a fundamental goal of the blockchain sector.

Chainlink claims that all real-world assets taken together have a value of an amazing $874 trillion. Even a tiny fraction of that wealth finds the blockchain.

Sadly, these assets are dispersed over many platforms, businesses, and chains, which causes efficiency and liquidity problems for investors and speculators trying to release value buried in often illiquid assets, including real estate and collectibles.

This is where the CCIP system of Chainlink finds use. It serves as a kind of “layer 0” protocol for public blockchains as well as even conventional financial architecture across chains of communication.

Chainlink effectively ran a pilot test using SWIFT, the worldwide messaging system used in interbank communication, in 2023.

To bring real-world assets on-chain, the Oracle network and interoperability protocol also carried out a similar experimental test with the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC) and other banking partners, including JP Morgan and BNY Mellon.

Chainlink’s tests with SWIFT and the DTCC draw attention to the possible synergies among blockchain, conventional banks, and international corporations.

Thus, this event aims to bring together Ethereum’s most crucial developers, researchers, and community. It also offers the chance to network and meet with people working on Ethereum.

What is Devconnect?

Devconnect is a week-long meetup comprising independent Ethereum events, each with a different focus point. Besides, its goal is to offer deep-dive sessions on specific topics and bring together the Ethereum community in smaller groups to make substantial progress.

Furthermore, the events during Devconnect will be autonomous and organized by experts in the field, who could potentially include you. Also, the team will facilitate coordination to avoid pulling participants in different directions and will maintain a collaborative workspace for all those interested in cooperation throughout the week.

Most events are designed to cater to experts or enthusiasts in the event’s specific field, ensuring full understanding and discussion of the subject. They express their desire for this week-long meetup to facilitate in-depth discussions and conversations necessary for further improving Ethereum, as opposed to a regular conference.

They emphasize that Devconnect ≠ Devcon. Because of the fact that Devcon will remain the main event. Also, the next Devcon event will take place in Southeast Asia in 2024.

Celo Has Added Google Cloud to Its List of Network Validators

The Celo Foundation achieved a significant milestone in its partnership with Google Cloud by officially having the cloud service provider join as a validator on the Celo network. With this move, Google Cloud becomes part of a group that actively verifies new transactions and ensures the security of the blockchain, which also includes Deutsche Telekom and other ecosystem contributors.

Strenghtening the Web3 Ecosystem

The collaboration between Google Cloud and Celo has a history of fruitful endeavors.Prior to this significant milestone, they had collaborated closely, coming together to offer workshops and cloud computing services to developers and Web3 founders building on the Celo network. This collaboration demonstrated their strong commitment to strengthening the Web3 ecosystem.

Migrating to Ethereum Layer-2 Solution

Recently, the Celo network embraced a proposal to transition from its independent blockchain to an Ethereum layer-2 solution. The primary goal of this move is to simplify liquidity sharing between the two networks and strengthen security. To expedite and facilitate this migration, the team behind Celo, cLabs, will harness the power of Google Cloud’s Blockchain Node Engine, a fully managed node-hosting service.

The implementation of the Blockchain Node Engine will streamline node operations for Celo participants by efficiently relaying transactions, eliminating the need for nodes to sync and significantly improving efficiency. This seamless integration will enhance Celo 2.0‘s compatibility with the Ethereum network, reinforcing its strong position within the broader ecosystem.

Carlos Arena, the Director of Digital Assets at Google Cloud, enthusiastically expressed his support for the collaboration, stating, “At Google Cloud, we remain dedicated to empowering the growth of the Web3 ecosystem by equipping founders and developers with the essential tools to scale their applications. By running a validator on the Celo network, we take another step forward in our partnership with the Celo Foundation, and we are genuinely excited to contribute to the network’s ongoing success.

By running a validator on the Celo network, Google Cloud takes another significant step forward in its partnership with the Celo Foundation. This move demonstrates our enthusiasm and commitment to contribute actively to the network’s ongoing success. We are excited to play a vital role in supporting Celo’s growth and development as it continues to make significant strides in the blockchain space.
