Pi Network’s (PI) token has gained 38% this week, drawing significant attention. This sudden surge is being attributed to the project’s artificial intelligence (AI)-focused plans and growing rumors of a potential collaboration with Google. These developments, taking place just before the upcoming Pi2Day event on Saturday, have further boosted expectations.

Pi Network (PI) Joins the Consensus 2025 Panel!

The rise was sparked after Pi Network co-founder Nicolas Kokkalis appeared on a generative AI panel at the Consensus 2025 event. On Sunday, Pi Network’s official X account posted that more details would be shared on Thursday during the Pi2Day event.

Following this announcement, the PI token price soared to $0.65 on Wednesday, up from its Sunday low of $0.47 — marking a roughly 38% increase. However, the price later dropped. At the time of writing, the PI token is trading at $0.5595, showing a daily loss of 8.3%.

Google Partnership Speculations Go Viral on Social Media

As the price climbed, speculation about a possible partnership with Google began circulating on social media. One X user pointed out that a star icon used in a Pi Network announcement resembles the logo of Google’s AI division. Another user speculated that the announcement might relate to a project called “PiAI.”

While some community members were excited, others approached the news with caution. One comment stated, “Expectations might be high for Saturday, but it’s wise to keep them in check to avoid disappointment.” Another user criticized Pi Network for lacking real innovation, urging the community to ask more questions and stay critical.

$100 Million Startup Fund Announcement

The recent PI token activity also brought renewed attention to a major announcement made last month. On May 15, Pi Network revealed a $100 million investment fund aimed at boosting the utility of its blockchain ecosystem. The company stated that the fund would support developers through investments in both US dollars and its native token.

With all eyes now on Saturday’s Pi2Day event, the community is eager to see how the upcoming announcement will shape Pi Network’s roadmap and its standing in the crypto world.

But with decentralization, a new era is emerging, one where even a local store can contribute to and benefit from global network infrastructure.

Speaking at Consensus 2025 in Toronto, Frank Mong, COO of Nova Labs, explained how decentralized networks like Helium are reshaping the industry. Small businesses such as cafes, bars, and convenience stores can now host wireless hotspots and generate passive income.

Replacing Towers With Shared Wi-Fi

“It costs about $300,000 to build one 5G tower, and you need one on every block,” Mong said. “Instead of raising mobile plan costs, what if people simply share their Wi-Fi securely and large companies like AT&T tap into that data?”

With 95,272 mobile hotspots and 284,053 active IoT nodes, the Helium Network has become a real-world application of DePIN technology. The U.S. currently leads in hotspot density.

Major Partnerships Fuel Expansion

In 2024, Telefónica partnered with Nova Labs to enhance coverage in underserved areas. In April 2025, AT&T joined in, allowing their users to automatically connect to the Helium network when within coverage.

Mong stated, “What we achieved in the U.S. and Mexico should be replicated globally,” signaling Nova Labs’ ambition to scale partnerships across regions.

What was once a technical vision is now a business opportunity for both mom-and-pop shops and multinational telecoms. Decentralized physical infrastructure networks are not just Web3 buzzwords — they are building a smarter, fairer, and more cost-effective future for telecom.

The future of the internet is no longer confined to Earth. As space exploration grows, the need for faster, more secure, and resilient data transmission systems becomes critical. The limitations of centralized data exchange are finally being challenged by decentralized protocols — and the results are groundbreaking.

IPFS Successfully Tested in Orbit

The Filecoin Foundation and aerospace giant Lockheed Martin have transmitted data using the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) on a satellite orbiting Earth. The announcement came from Filecoin Foundation president Marta Belcher at the Consensus 2025 conference in Toronto.

You Might Be Interested In: Elon Musk Talks About the Name of a New Memecoin!

Unlike traditional web protocols like HTTP, IPFS identifies data by its content rather than location. Belcher noted that this structure is especially beneficial for space, where radiation-induced data corruption is common and latency is a serious issue. IPFS allows cryptographic verification, ensuring that data remains untampered even in extreme environments.

Reducing Delay in Space Data Transfers

“There’s a multi-second delay from the Moon and a multi-minute delay from Mars,” Belcher explained. With IPFS, users query a content ID and retrieve data from the closest source — be it your device, a satellite, or a lunar station. This drastically cuts down the delay and enhances the reliability of the system.

The Filecoin protocol uses this decentralized architecture to distribute multiple copies of data across a global network, reducing dependence on centralized storage hubs. In space, where hardware degrades more quickly, this redundancy ensures the integrity of critical data, such as satellite imagery.

Media and Military Applications on the Horizon

Belcher added that interest in decentralized storage is also rising in media and defense sectors. Archiving sensitive data securely and retrieving it globally can be revolutionary for many industries. The FIL token, central to the Filecoin ecosystem, currently holds a market capitalization of approximately $1.8 billion as of May 16.
