The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has excited cryptocurrency investors with a recent decision by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) to make significant changes to the Value Added Tax (VAT) regulations concerning cryptocurrencies and virtual assets. This announcement brings great news to businesses operating in the sector.

Key Changes Announced

According to the statement, the new VAT exemptions were announced on October 2, 2024, and will be retroactively applied from January 1, 2018. This means that businesses dealing in virtual assets will be able to reclaim VAT that they paid previously.

Implementation Details

– The changes will come into effect following the Cabinet Decision No. 100 of 2024 and are part of broader amendments to the Executive Regulation of the Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017.

– The new rules are set to become operational on November 15, 2024, aiming to enhance clarity regarding VAT treatment for various services involving digital assets.

Advice for Businesses

The FTA has advised businesses in the virtual asset sector to carefully analyze the impact of VAT exemptions on their operations. Companies will need to voluntarily declare any adjustments needed for past VAT refunds.

This decision is expected to significantly benefit the UAE’s cryptocurrency sector, promoting growth and innovation while providing businesses with a more favorable regulatory environment.

Argentina has decided to remove cryptocurrency Taxes regulations from a comprehensive bill that was submitted to Congress.

Previously, the bill would have given taxpayers the opportunity to declare previously undeclared assets, including cryptocurrency, and reduce their associated tax and fee obligations.

You might like: FTX Exchange Will Not Be Relaunched!

The bill, called the “Law of Foundations and Starting Points for the Freedom of Argentines”, was an attempt to implement broad reforms. One of these reforms would have given President Milei the authority to directly regulate various areas, bypassing congressional processes.

Interior Minister Guillermo Francos said that the removal of the tax regulations was due to the inability to reach an agreement in Congress on the matter. Francos said that they aim to stimulate economic growth and quickly implement regulations in this direction and that the tax provision was less of a priority and slowed down the process.

The repealed tax regulation would have allowed Argentine citizens to declare previously undeclared assets, including cryptocurrency. The first $100,000 of these assets would have been taxed at a rate of 0%, while the remaining portion would have been taxed at rates up to 15%.

In Argentina, simply owning cryptocurrency does not create a tax liability. However, according to renowned Argentine economist Marcos Zocaro, the sale of cryptocurrency and the income generated from these transactions are taxed.

Argentina’s tax authority, AFIP, considers cryptocurrency to be a financial asset and these assets are subject to different tax rates depending on where they are located. The taxable amount is calculated based on the market value determined on December 31 of each year.

Analysis (Cryptocurrency Taxes)

The removal of cryptocurrency tax regulations in Argentina is a positive development for the cryptocurrency industry in the country. It will make it easier for Argentines to invest in and use cryptocurrency, and it could lead to increased adoption of cryptocurrency in the country.

The removal of the tax regulations is also a sign that the Argentine government is becoming more supportive of cryptocurrency. This is a welcome development for the cryptocurrency industry in Argentina and around the world.
