China’s Nvidia Chip Ban and Its Reasons

The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) has ordered ByteDance and Alibaba to halt the use of the RTX Pro 6000D model and cancel current orders. The regulator also demanded that companies suspend testing and validation processes with their suppliers. The ban is not limited to the RTX Pro 6000D; previous warnings regarding the H20 chip remain in effect.

The main goal of the ban is to strengthen China’s domestic semiconductor industry and reduce dependency on U.S. technologies. This move aligns with China’s strategy to reshape supply chains amid ongoing technology and trade disputes with the U.S.

Impact on Crypto Markets

This decision could negatively affect Nvidia’s revenue expectations in the Chinese market and cause a decline in its stock price. Nvidia chips are critical for both AI applications and crypto mining. China’s move could reduce demand for mining hardware, leading to short-term volatility in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Additionally, the introduction of domestic DeepSeek chips could shrink Nvidia’s market share and lower equipment prices.

Domestic Chip Production and AI Performance

China has confirmed that local manufacturers provide performance comparable to Nvidia models. Alibaba, Baidu, Huawei, and Cambricon reported their products to regulators in comparison with Nvidia’s China-specific chips.

For instance, Alibaba’s T-Head unit supplies 72% of the chips used in China Unicom’s Xining data center, which has 3,579 petaflops of computing power and aims to reach 20,000 petaflops by 2026. According to the Financial Times, Chinese manufacturers plan to triple AI processor production next year, ensuring local supply meets demand without reliance on Nvidia chips.

Nvidia and Its Future in China

Nvidia developed China-specific products like the RTX Pro 6000D in response to U.S. restrictions on high-performance AI chip exports during former President Joe Biden’s administration. CEO Jensen Huang introduced these chips during a visit to Beijing and announced eased H20 export restrictions.

Despite this, the CAC warned companies not to purchase H20 chips and requested explanations for using domestic products.

Chinese AI firm DeepSeek has made a bold move in the open-source field by unveiling Prover V2, a large language model (LLM) designed to assist with mathematical theorem verification. With this latest release, DeepSeek aims to push the boundaries of AI-assisted scientific research and education.

Prover V2 Automates Proof Generation

On April 30, DeepSeek released its new model on Hugging Face, a popular open-source AI platform. Distributed under the MIT license, Prover V2 features a staggering 671 billion parameters, placing it well ahead of its earlier versions, Prover V1 and V1.5, both introduced in 2024.

Earlier documentation from the Prover V1 release showed that the model could translate complex math problems into formal logic using the Lean 4 programming language, a tool often used for mathematical proof systems. With Prover V2, DeepSeek expands this capability, enabling the model to compress and generate mathematical knowledge and verify it with higher accuracy.

The Debate Over Open Weights

The open release of LLM weights continues to spark debate within the AI community. By sharing these models publicly, companies make it possible for users to run advanced AI on their own systems — without relying on proprietary infrastructure. However, this openness also introduces concerns about misuse, as no safeguards prevent the model from being used irresponsibly.

Despite the risks, many see DeepSeek’s approach as a victory for AI transparency and accessibility, especially following the footsteps of Meta’s LLaMA models. The move signals growing momentum behind open AI development as a counterweight to more restrictive platforms.

Making AI Models More Accessible

Running massive models like Prover V2 once required extremely high-end hardware. That’s changing, thanks to techniques like quantization and model distillation. Distillation allows a smaller model to learn the behaviors of a larger one, preserving much of the performance while cutting hardware requirements. Quantization, on the other hand, reduces the numerical precision of weights, saving memory and boosting inference speeds.

Prover V2 uses 8-bit quantized weights, allowing the 650 GB model to become more manageable. DeepSeek has previously distilled its R1 model into lighter versions, some with as few as 1.5 billion parameters — low enough to run even on mobile devices in some cases.

This release not only advances AI in math but also continues to democratize powerful AI tools for researchers, developers, and learners around the world.

The White House AI and crypto czar David Sacks says Meta’s release of its latest AI model, Llama 4, has pushed the United States into the lead in the global artificial intelligence race.

Sacks has been vocal about the AI race since taking on his role following US President Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20. Just over a week into the job, Sacks said he is “confident in the US, but we can’t be complacent.”

Sack’s latest comment came after Meta’s AI division said in an X post on the same day that it is introducing the fourth generation of its Llama models: Llama 4 Scout and Llama 4 Maverick.

Chinese authorities have announced that scammers posing as DeepSeek developers have been luring users with fake investment opportunities, while fake DeepSeek apps containing malware are also spreading. Targeting crypto investors, these scammers have created a large-scale fraud network through fabricated cryptocurrencies, fake educational programs, and malware.

DeepSeek’s Popularity Has Targeted Scammers

DeepSeek attracted a lot of attention in January when it unveiled an AI model that claimed to compete with OpenAI. However, this popularity has also turned into an opportunity for scammers looking to lure investors.

Fraudsters posing as DeepSeek developers lured investors by promoting their project as a “high-end AI-powered investment opportunity ”. The scammers, who raised funds under the name of crowdfunding, disappeared after receiving the money.

According to authorities, victims thought they were part of a system that would earn them 10,000 yuan ($1,373) a month. But investors lost their funds and their personal data was compromised.

Fake Tutorials and DeepSeekCoin Scam

Scammers used various deceptive methods to attract investors:

Fake Training Programs: Users were sold a guide to writing viral content for 39.9 yuan ($5.5). However, only 4 pages of the document contained relevant information, while the rest consisted of content culled from the internet, accessible to anyone.

Monetization Boot Camps: Fraudsters offered courses for 299 to 399 yuan ($41 to $55) under the name “monetization training.” However, the courses turned out to have no real value.

DeepSeekCoin Scam: They launched a fake token called DeepSeekCoin, spreading the lie that DeepSeek is an official cryptocurrency. By presenting this fake token as an investment opportunity, the scammers caused users to lose all their funds.

The DeepSeek team announced that it is staying away from these scams and has not launched any cryptocurrency projects. They also warned investors, emphasizing that they only communicate through their official Twitter account.

DeepSeek Considers External Funding for the First Time

DeepSeek, a China-based artificial intelligence (AI) company, is considering seeking external funding for the first time. The company has garnered attention for its innovative work in the AI field, drawing interest from investors.

Founder Liang Wenfeng is in discussions about the company’s growth strategies and potential investment opportunities. This move reflects the company’s aim to expand its global influence and increase resources.

DeepSeek’s AI models challenge traditional industry concepts by delivering advanced technologies at lower costs. This innovative approach has captured the attention of investors, enhancing the company’s financial growth potential.

The company’s pursuit of external funding aligns with China’s efforts to strengthen its competitiveness in the AI sector. This step aims to bolster DeepSeek’s position in the global AI market and establish international partnerships.

DeepSeek Challenges the Industry with Innovative AI Models

Founded in May 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, DeepSeek is a Chinese startup that challenges major AI firms with its open-source approach. The company is funded solely by Wenfeng’s High-Flyer fund, providing a model conducive to rapid growth and research.

In January, DeepSeek’s R1 model surpassed OpenAI’s o1 model, and its V3 model became the most downloaded free app on the App Store, surpassing ChatGPT. Additionally, the company’s ability to optimize older chips and create successful models has been recognized as exceeding industry standards.

South Korea announced that DeepSeek has agreed to cooperate in strengthening privacy protections.

South Korea Temporarily Halts DeepSeek App Downloads Amid Data Concerns

South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) has temporarily suspended DeepSeek’s availability in the country’s app stores while it investigates the Chinese company’s data processing practices.

In a statement released on February 17, the PIPC confirmed that DeepSeek had voluntarily agreed to suspend new downloads as of February 15 and to cooperate with the commission to improve privacy protections before the app is relaunched.

Although the suspension limits new downloads, existing users can continue using DeepSeek’s services. However, the commission has advised users to exercise caution until the results of the investigation are made public.

The PIPC emphasized its goal to “closely inspect the personal information processing practices of DeepSeek during the suspension period, improve compliance with protection laws, and address concerns about the safeguarding of our citizens’ personal information.”

DeepSeek, which launched its AI-powered chatbot on January 27, raised concerns among regulators and privacy experts regarding its potential national security risks, sparking discussions about data security. Additionally, the app’s release coincided with a downturn in the U.S. stock and cryptocurrency markets.

PIPC Begins Audit on DeepSeek’s Data Handling Practices

The PIPC initiated an audit following the launch of DeepSeek’s chatbot and has requested details from the company on how it collects and processes personal data.

“Through our analysis, we identified some issues with the communication functions and personal data processing policies involving third-party service providers, as reported by both domestic and international media,” the PIPC said.

As part of its investigation, the PIPC will conduct on-site inspections to ensure compliance with South Korea’s data protection laws and assess how DeepSeek handles the personal data of its users.

The agency also plans to propose improvements to ensure that DeepSeek meets the country’s legal requirements and intends to offer guidance to other AI companies to prevent similar issues in the future.

Last year, the PIPC conducted preliminary inspections of six AI companies in the country, a process that took about five months.

“This inspection is focused on a single operator and is expected to progress more swiftly, thanks to accumulated experience and knowledge,” the agency concluded.

Trump’s Trade Wars: What does it mean and how are they affecting the global economy?

When Trump began his presidency in 2017, he took a firm stance against trade partners with the aim of reducing the U.S. trade deficit and boosting American manufacturing. His policies, particularly those targeting China, led to a series of tariffs and trade barriers that began to affect the global economy. This process marked the first significant phase of the trade wars, which were expected to have long-term effects.

The Beginning of Trump’s Trade Wars

The most prominent feature of the trade wars was the high tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on China. Trump considered China’s trade practices “unfair” and harmful to the U.S. economy. As a result, in 2018, high tariffs were placed on products imported from China. For example, tariffs on products like steel and aluminum were raised up to 25%. In retaliation, China imposed similar tariffs on U.S. products. These reciprocal tariffs shook the global trade balances and caused disruptions in supply chains worldwide.

China and Other Countries’ Responses

China escalated the trade war in response to these moves by imposing tariffs on key U.S. exports, such as soybeans, cars, and aircraft. In retaliation to Trump’s aggressive trade policies, China made these counteractions on the international stage. However, the trade war did not just affect the U.S. and China; it impacted many other countries around the world as well. Notably, trade partners like Canada protested the tariff increases imposed by the U.S. and took countermeasures in return.

The 2024 Election and Trump’s Revival of the Trade War

After winning the 2024 presidential election, Trump reignited the trade war and further solidified his tough stance on global trade relations. Following the election, he imposed new tariffs on goods imported from trade partners such as China, Canada, and Mexico.

A 25% tariff was applied to goods from Canada and Mexico, while a 10% tariff was imposed on goods from China. This move caused the trade war to intensify once again, leaving global trade in a state of uncertainty.

With these actions, Trump aimed to narrow the U.S. trade deficit further and stimulate American manufacturing. However, this policy disrupted global supply chains, causing economic ripples in other countries as well.

Reactions and Retaliations from Other Countries

In response to Trump’s new measures in 2024, countries like China, Canada, and Mexico reacted to the newly imposed tariffs. China, in particular, retaliated by placing new tariffs on U.S. products. Additionally, the European Union was contemplating a counteraction to Trump’s escalated trade war. Canada and Mexico, similarly, increased their tariffs on U.S. goods in retaliation.

The AI War: A New Front in Global Trade

Trump’s trade wars extended beyond traditional trade to significantly impact the field of artificial intelligence (AI). As the U.S. competed with China over AI technologies, new platforms like DeepSeek were launched, shaping the future of global trade. DeepSeek developed a low-cost technology capable of competing with giants like OpenAI and Google, threatening Nvidia’s dominance.

DeepSeek‘s success caused Nvidia’s stock to drop by 17%. Furthermore, this development also impacted the energy sector, as more efficient AI technologies reduced energy consumption, leading to a slowdown in demand within the sector.

Trump‘s post-election trade decisions further fueled this AI war. New tariffs on China and pressures on tech companies created tension in global trade and digital warfare. These developments also affected financial markets and the cryptocurrency sector, leading to major shifts in investment strategies and global markets.

Impact of the Trade War on Markets

Trump’s aggressive tariffs and retaliations not only impacted global trade but also financial markets. The cryptocurrency market, in particular, saw significant losses due to the effects of the trade war. Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), for example, lost considerable value, with Bitcoin dropping from $106,000 to below $90,000, marking a 15.09% decline. This loss triggered panic among investors, leading to significant liquidations in the crypto markets. Furthermore, the economic uncertainty caused by the trade wars led to a contraction in global trade and a slowdown in economic growth.

After Trump’s victory in 2024, the trade policies he implemented reshaped global trade. Reactions and counter-retaliations from trade partners like China, Canada, and Mexico escalated the trade war. The effects of the trade war were not limited to traditional markets but also impacted digital assets such as cryptocurrencies.

Trump’s trade war deeply affected global trade and financial markets, raising economic uncertainty and causing disruptions in global supply chains.

India is preparing to join the global artificial intelligence race and is set to release a generative AI model in 2025.

India is taking significant steps to strengthen its AI infrastructure. The country has acquired a total of 18,693 GPUs, including 12,896 Nvidia H100s, and aims to attract $20 billion in foreign investment for data centers over the next three years.

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that India’s homegrown generative AI model will be developed to suit the country’s multilingual and cultural diversity.

Vaishnaw: “We believe that at least six major developers will be able to produce AI models in the next six to eight months, and this timeline could even shorten to four to six months.”

This announcement coincides with the release of the open-source DeepSeek R1, which has been noted for competing with OpenAI’s leading models, but at a fraction of the cost to train.

India Joins the Race, Global AI Competition Heats Up

The launch of DeepSeek R1 has shaken many long-standing assumptions in the AI field, particularly the belief that scaling AI models requires enormous computational power. This shift has intensified the global AI competition.

In response to the impact of DeepSeek, U.S. President Donald Trump has placed tighter restrictions on the export of high-performance AI chips produced by leading chipmaker Nvidia.

The U.S. government has already imposed three major export bans targeting Nvidia’s sales to China. In 2022, an embargo was placed on the H100 AI processor, and in 2023, semiconductor component sales were prohibited. Additionally, Nvidia’s A800 and H800 chips, which were modified to comply with earlier U.S. sanctions on AI components for China, have also been included in the expanded restrictions.

Security researchers at Microsoft, OpenAI’s largest investor, detected suspicious data extraction from the company’s API in the fall of 2024.

Microsoft and OpenAI Investigate DeepSeek-Linked Data Leak

Microsoft and OpenAI are investigating whether a group connected to the Chinese AI startup DeepSeek extracted data from OpenAI’s technology infrastructure without permission.

According to Bloomberg’s report on January 29, Microsoft’s security researchers detected large-scale suspicious data extraction through OpenAI’s API in late 2024. As OpenAI’s largest investor, Microsoft reported the issue to the company, noting that it could be a violation of ChatGPT’s terms of service or a breach of data collection restrictions.

On January 20, DeepSeek, based in China, unveiled a new AI model called R-1. Despite significantly lower production costs, the model is said to be competitive with ChatGPT. Following the announcement, U.S. tech and AI stocks saw billions of dollars in value losses.

David Sacks, White House Crypto and AI Advisor, stated in an interview with Fox News on January 28 that there is evidence DeepSeek used OpenAI’s model outputs to train its own AI. Sacks explained that this method, known as “distillation,” allows one AI model to develop similar capabilities by training on the outputs of another model.

Sacks said, “There is significant evidence that what DeepSeek is doing is distilling information from OpenAI’s models, and I don’t think OpenAI is very happy about this.”

OpenAI and U.S. Navy Take Action Against DeepSeek

While OpenAI expressed concerns about Chinese companies attempting to copy U.S. AI models, it refrained from commenting specifically on DeepSeek.

An OpenAI spokesperson told Bloomberg, “Companies in the People’s Republic of China and others are attempting to distill the leading AI models from the U.S.” However, the company did not make a specific statement about DeepSeek’s activities.

The investigation conducted by OpenAI and Microsoft is looking into whether the company’s terms of service were violated and whether data access restrictions were bypassed. This situation highlights the intensifying AI technology competition between the U.S. and China.

Amid these developments, CNBC reported on January 28 that the U.S. Navy has completely banned the use of DeepSeek. This decision was made due to concerns that the Chinese government might use AI to gain access to sensitive data. The decision was announced in an email sent to personnel on January 24.

The message emphasized that DeepSeek posed “security and ethical risks” and that Navy members should “not use this model under any circumstances.”

Yesterday, spot Bitcoin ETFs saw net outflows of $457.6 million, while spot Ethereum ETFs experienced outflows of $136.2 million.

The launch of DeepSeek increased selling pressure in the crypto market, causing Bitcoin’s value to drop to as low as $97,713. However, Bitcoin quickly rebounded, surpassing the $100,000 mark once again.

As of the new trading day, Bitcoin is trading at $102,815, while Ethereum stands at $3,194.

The total market capitalization of cryptocurrencies has reached $3.44 trillion, with Bitcoin’s market value calculated at $2.03 trillion and Ethereum’s at $385 billion.

Million-Dollar Outflows in Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs

On January 27, spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded total net outflows of $457 million. This marked the first instance of net outflows following seven consecutive days of net inflows.

Fidelity Bitcoin ETF (FBTC) faced the largest outflows at $286 million, followed by Grayscale Bitcoin ETF (GBTC) with $108 million in outflows.

On the same day, Ethereum spot ETFs also experienced total net outflows of $136 million. Grayscale Ethereum ETF (ETHE) recorded a single-day outflow of $84.22 million, while Fidelity Ethereum ETF (FET) saw an outflow of $68.46 million.

Trump’s WLFI Project Seizes the Opportunity

Taking advantage of yesterday’s dip, Trump’s WLFI project purchased $10 million worth of Ethereum.

The DeFi project World Liberty Financial (WLFI), supported by the Trump family, executed a significant transaction by purchasing 3,247.3 ETH at a price of $3,079, totaling 10 million USDT. This move highlights WLFI’s ongoing strategy to diversify its portfolio.
