A fraud ring operating in the Kent region of the UK ensnared nine people by faking police reports and posing as crypto wallet providers. After accessing the victims’ personal information through a data leak, the fraudsters used this information to steal $1.2 million in crypto assets.

Scammers’ Scheme: Fake Police Investigations and Lie about Wallet Security

Using personal information obtained from the data leak, the fraudsters created fake reports, claiming to be issued on behalf of Action Fraud, the UK’s official fraud reporting center.

Victims received a phone call from the scammers, who identified themselves as police officers, informing them that they had been implicated in an investigation into their crypto assets. In this first call, victims were told they would receive a security call from their “crypto wallet provider” shortly.

In the second phase, the scammers called again posing as a “security official” and told the victims that their crypto wallets were at risk of being compromised. Panicked victims were convinced to share their seed phrases (private access keys) to keep their wallets safe.

With this information in hand, the scammers created the wallets from scratch and transferred all the assets in them to other addresses.

Warning from Authorities: Don’t Fall for Emergency Pressure!

Kent Police have urged citizens to be wary of emergency scenarios driven by false authority figures. Detective Sergeant Darryll Paulson said fraudsters are using psychological manipulation techniques to panic their victims:

“Scammers force their victims to act quickly, preventing them from thinking. Scenarios like ‘your money will be stolen if you don’t take immediate action’ are one of the most common scam tactics.”

Authorities emphasized that victims of fraud should report cases to the police without embarrassment. “A moment of carelessness can happen to anyone. But reporting such incidents to the authorities can prevent others from being harmed,” Paulson said.

A landfill site in the United Kingdom where a hard disk containing 8000 Bitcoins is thought to be buried will be permanently closed in the 2025-26 financial year. This landfill site in Newport, Wales, was at the center of Bitcoin miner James Howells’ struggle to find his lost fortune.

Ten-Year Struggle Comes to an End

The regional council has announced that the landfill has reached the end of its life and will be completely closed within two years , the BBC reported on February 9. Permission has been granted to convert part of the site into a solar power plant, officials said.

James Howells, a former IT worker from Newport, claimed that in 2013 he accidentally trashed his ex-partner’s hard drive, which contained 8000 BTC he had mined in 2009. He had been fighting a legal battle for years to get back these Bitcoins, which are worth approximately 768 million dollars today.

The Court has made a final decision

For years, the Howells have demanded permission from the municipality to excavate the landfill or compensation for the loss. However, in January the court rejected these requests, stating that the case had “no realistic chance of winning “.

Howells had argued that the hard disk could easily be found using artificial intelligence and advanced technology and that the excavation would cost neither the municipality nor the public. However, Newport council rejected the request, citing that such an excavation would violate environmental permits and cause massive ecological damage.

Missing Bitcoins and Future Threats

The 8000 BTC thought to be on James Howells’ hard drive is only a small part of the vast fortune lost in the crypto world. Web3 executive Al Leong notes that 13% of the total Bitcoin supply – about 3 million BTC – is inaccessible.

On the other hand, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino suggests that quantum computers could in the future hack into lost Bitcoin wallets and put these assets back into circulation. Some analysts say this could put selling pressure on the Bitcoin price.

With the closure of the landfill in Newport, Howells’ years-long hope of recovering $768 million in Bitcoin appears to be largely over.

US-based cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has been approved as a registered virtual asset service provider (VASP) by the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). With this development, the UK has become the largest Coinbase market outside the US.

Thanks to the FCA approval, Coinbase will be able to serve both retail and institutional customers in the UK and provide crypto-fiat conversion transactions. With this license, Coinbase strengthened its position as the largest regulated crypto exchange in the country.

UK’s Crypto Goals and Coinbase’s European Plans

As the UK takes steps towards becoming a global crypto hub, the FCA plans to establish a full crypto regulatory framework by 2026. Crypto adoption in the country is growing rapidly, with 12% of British adults owning digital assets, up 2% from 2023, according to research published by the FCA in November 2024. The average crypto asset amount also increased from £1,595 ($1,964) to £1,842 ($2,268).

Coinbase is already licensed in European countries such as Ireland and Germany and operates as a crypto service provider in the Netherlands and Italy. While the FCA approval strengthens the company’s expansion strategy in Europe, Coinbase also appears to be turning its sights on the Asian market.

Coinbase Plans to Expand to Southeast Asia

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong met with Philippines Finance Minister Ralph Recto at the World Economic Forum in Davos to discuss its strategy for entering the Southeast Asia region. The Philippines Ministry of Finance announced that Coinbase is considering investing in the country.

The company has supported local stablecoin projects in the Philippines and Thailand while conducting research on how crypto can improve financial systems in these regions. Coinbase also began operating in Singapore in October 2023, receiving regulatory approval.

Coinbase’s successful completion of the regulatory compliance process in the UK and Europe signals that the company may accelerate its expansion plans into Southeast Asia.
