Key Protocol Changes Introduced by Pectra

The Pectra upgrade implements three essential Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs):

• EIP-7702: Enables externally owned accounts (EOAs) to function like smart contracts. As a result, users can now pay for gas fees using tokens other than ETH, unlocking more flexible transaction models.

• EIP-7251: Raises the validator staking cap from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH, making staking operations significantly more efficient for large-scale participants and institutional validators.

• EIP-7691: Increases the number of data blobs per block, which boosts Layer-2 scalability and could lead to reduced transaction costs.

Smart Accounts: Redefining the Wallet Experience

With EIP-7702, Ethereum takes a big step toward account abstraction, simplifying the user experience across decentralized applications. This allows for:

• Eliminating repetitive approval prompts

• Automating transactions without requiring constant signatures

• Granting specific permissions to decentralized apps (dApps)

• Streamlining interactions by hiding backend complexities from users

These changes could make Web3 interactions feel more like the Web2 experience users are accustomed to. Additionally, the update paves the way for gasless transactions, significantly improving accessibility for newcomers.

However, not all risks are eliminated. Experts caution that the new structure introduces the potential for users to unintentionally approve harmful actions that could compromise wallet security. Even so, many developers remain confident that today’s smart contracts are built with robust safety standards in mind.

Institutional Staking Gets a Major Boost

Pectra also makes Ethereum more attractive to institutional stakers. Previously, exiting a staking position required waiting up to 13 hours and obtaining a signed message from the staking service provider. With the upgrade, this exit delay is reduced to about 13 minutes, streamlining the entire process for institutional clients.

Transparent Validator Onboarding

EIP-6110 introduces another important change under the hood. Validator deposit data is now directly embedded in the execution-layer blocks, rather than relying on Merkle root voting by block proposers. This ensures faster and more transparent onboarding of new validators into Ethereum’s staking ecosystem and strengthens the network’s foundational infrastructure.

Ethereum Pectra Update Goes Live on Holesky Testnet

Ethereum’s Pectra update will go live today on the Holesky testnet, allowing developers to test the improvements before they are deployed to the Ethereum mainnet.

The Ethereum Foundation announced that Pectra will begin on Holesky at epoch 115,968, followed by its release on the Sepolia testnet at epoch 222,464 on March 5, UTC 07:29. After both testnets successfully update to Pectra, an event epoch will be set for the mainnet.

Pectra introduces features that enhance ETH accounts, support layer-2 scalability, and improve the user experience for validators.

The Pectra fork comes after the Dencun update, which reduced transaction fees for layer-2 networks and improved the economics of ETH rollups. The Dencun hard fork went live on March 13, 2024, marking an important step toward mass adoption.

Pectra is considered a significant advancement in the abstraction of ETH accounts. This update includes EIP-3074, improving Ethereum account abstraction, enabling externally owned accounts (EOAs) to perform batch transactions and receive sponsored gas payments.

Pectra Update Improves ETH Gas Fees and Blob Capacity

The Pectra fork follows the Dencun update, which reduced transaction fees for layer-2 networks and improved Ethereum rollup economics. The Dencun hard fork, released on March 13, 2024, was seen as a crucial step for mass adoption.

Pectra is a major step in Ethereum account abstraction, featuring EIP-3074, which improves Ethereum account abstraction. This update allows externally owned accounts (EOAs) to perform batch transactions and receive sponsored gas payments.

Gas sponsorship allows users to perform transactions through an account without Ether, providing alternative authentication, spending control mechanisms, and other recovery tools.

Additionally, the Pectra update will increase Ethereum’s blob capacity by 50%. Currently, the mainnet supports an average of three blobs per block, but with Pectra, this number will rise to six.

Ethereum’s Pectra Update Brings New Features and Accelerates Roadmap

Blobs are temporary data storage used by layer-2 blockchains to present compressed transaction data and proofs to the mainnet. The integration of blobs into Ethereum makes layer-2 transactions significantly cheaper.

One Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) in Pectra will increase the rewards available to validators. Currently, validators can stake a maximum of 32 ETH, but with Pectra, this maximum balance will increase to 2,048 ETH.

The deployment of Pectra on testnet follows Ethereum developers’ decisions to accelerate the network’s roadmap. In the “All Core Devs” meeting on February 13, ecosystem core developers and leaders supported faster protocol updates.

Nixo Rokish from the Ethereum Foundation’s protocol support team stated that this means more aggressive views with less hesitation about the scope and no further time delays.

Additionally, the current account abstraction proposal EIP-3074 will be replaced by EIP-7702, a new proposal submitted by Vitalik Buterin. EIP-7702 will introduce a new transaction type that allows Ethereum account addresses to temporarily act as smart contract wallets during a transaction and return to their original state following the transaction.

The developers agreed at an execution layer meeting that they aim to implement this update in the first quarter of 2025. Pectra represents the next major update for Ethereum, following the Dencun update that was successfully implemented in March 2023.

EOF consists of approximately 11 improvement recommendations aimed at improving EVM code at Layer 1 and Layer 2 levels. EIP-7251, on the other hand, will allow validators to stake up to 2,048 ETH instead of 32 ETH, allowing them to manage higher staked validators in fewer and more efficient ways.

With these new updates, the Ethereum network aims to achieve a more advanced and flexible structure.
