On Thursday, tech companies—including Meta and Spotify—warned the European Union (EU) about the dangers of overregulating the artificial intelligence sector, which would probably reduce innovation.

The IT companies underlined to the EU in an open letter also supported by Italian luxury fashion company Prada that the area might not fully benefit from AI technology. Citing a difficult regulatory climate in the European Union (EU), Meta stated in July it was holding back its most powerful artificial intelligence model, Llama, from the European markets.

Now, experts and many industry associations joined executives of these tech companies in signing the letter to the EU explaining to the bloc that it is already fast becoming uncompetitive, partly because of its “fragmented and inconsistent” decision-making on subjects like data protection and AI.

The signatories so argued that the EU ran the risk of lagging behind the AI age and demanded “harmonized, consistent, quick, and clear decisions” from authorities to let European data be “used to train AI models to benefit Europeans,” among others.

The open letter pointed out the recent choices made under the global data protection rule (GDPR).

“While interventions by the European Data Protection Authorities have generated great uncertainty about what kinds of data can be used to train AI models, regulatory decision-making has become fractured and erratic in recent times.” The open letter stated.

Following great pressure from privacy authorities in the region, the parent company for Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram has been caught on the wrong side of the GDPR, forcing it to stop plans to utilize data from users in Europe to train its AI models.

Meta recently disclosed, nevertheless, that it would start training its artificial intelligence models using UK user data.
