The European Union is considering launching the digital euro on public blockchains such as Ethereum and Solana. According to the Financial Times, the European Central Bank (ECB), which previously focused on closed and private systems, is now exploring transparent blockchains that offer global accessibility.

Privacy Concerns and Strategic Opportunities

Officials acknowledge that full transaction transparency on public blockchains poses privacy risks. However, advocates argue that operating the digital euro on an open chain could accelerate adoption, enhance cross-border payment efficiency, and strengthen the euro’s global role.

A Response to U.S. Stablecoin Dominance

Following comprehensive U.S. regulations over the $277 billion stablecoin market, European policymakers are concerned about falling behind in digital payments. ECB board member Piero Cipollone warned that the growth of dollar-backed tokens could shift euro deposits abroad, threatening Europe’s financial stability.

Parallel Moves in China

Similar to Europe, China is taking steps to counter the global dominance of dollar-backed stablecoins. Beijing aims to promote the international use of yuan-backed stablecoins and balance the U.S. dollar’s global influence.

Unlike private euro stablecoins, the digital euro would carry direct ECB backing, offering a trusted public option. While the ECB’s final design is not yet confirmed, public blockchains like Ethereum and Solana could play a critical role in Europe’s digital currency strategy

The United States and the European Union (EU) have publicly disclosed the details of the trade agreement they reached last month. The joint statement includes comprehensive regulations on customs tariffs, energy purchases, technology cooperation, and strategic investments.

New Regulation on Customs Tariffs

Starting September 1, the U.S. will impose a 15% tariff on most imports from the EU — including automobiles, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and lumber. However, the U.S. agreed to reduce tariffs on automobiles once the EU’s “tariff reduction law” comes into effect.

Additionally, the U.S. will only apply MFN (Most-Favored Nation) tariffs to aircraft and spare parts, generic drugs, chemical precursors, and scarce natural resources.

In return, the EU will remove tariffs on all U.S. industrial products and provide preferential access for U.S. seafood and agricultural goods.

Energy and Technology Purchases

Under the new agreement, the EU committed to purchasing $750 billion worth of LNG, oil, and nuclear products from the U.S. Furthermore, the deal includes at least $40 billion in AI chip purchases by the EU.

These measures aim to strengthen U.S.-EU cooperation in both energy security and technology.

Investment and Strategic Cooperation

The EU has agreed to invest $600 billion in U.S. strategic sectors by 2028. The two sides also plan to negotiate rules of origin to ensure that the benefits remain limited to bilateral relations.

In addition, new cooperation mechanisms are being considered for protecting the steel and aluminum markets, removing barriers to digital trade, and securing supply chains. The EU pledged not to introduce network usage fees, while tariff quota solutions are also under discussion.

This new U.S.-EU trade agreement paves the way for large-scale investments in both energy and technology sectors. The mutual concessions made by both parties could signal a major shift in global trade dynamics.

Today, the inflation data for the Eurozone for the month of July was announced. The Consumer Price Index (CPI), which came in above expectations, stood at 2%.

The inflation, which was recorded at 2% in the previous period, indicates that inflationary pressures are continuing in the markets. This data is of critical importance for the monetary policy decisions of the European Central Bank (ECB).

The market expectation was at the 1.9% level. The previous period was recorded at 2%. Inflation came in above expectations. Monthly inflation was recorded at 0.1%. Core CPI (excluding food and energy), which is one of the key inflation indicators, rose to 2.9% on an annual basis.

This shows that the fundamental components of inflation are strengthening. Services sector inflation, at 1.82%, became the component with the highest annual inflation. According to the data, the annual inflation rate in the Eurozone came in above expectations, at 2%. This shows that the rate remained at the same level as the 2% recorded in June. The market expectation was 1.9%.

This situation indicates that the European Central Bank (ECB) has reached its inflation target of 2%, but that the pressures on price stability have not completely disappeared. Movements in sub-items, especially core inflation, will continue to provide important clues for the ECB’s future monetary policy decisions.

Following the news, the Bitcoin price is trading at $115,350. In short, there is an environment of uncertainty and reduced risk appetite in the markets. Investors are carefully watching Trump’s tariffs and the Fed’s interest rate policies.

The European Central Bank (ECB) made no changes to interest rates at its July meeting, in line with expectations. The main interest rate was kept at 2%, while the deposit rate remained unchanged at 2.15%.

This decision was largely anticipated by the markets and is being interpreted as laying the groundwork for a potential rate cut later in the year. The impact of the decision was immediately felt in the cryptocurrency markets as well.

Weak Signals of Economic Growth

Data from the private sector in the 20-member Eurozone suggested a mild recovery despite ongoing stagnation in major economies like France and Germany. However, the pace of growth remains weak.

At the same time, unemployment rates across the region continue to hover at historically low levels. Inflation is also near target, with annual inflation recorded at 2% in June—slightly up from 1.9% in May.

Inflation Rising in the U.S. and U.K.

Meanwhile, inflation in the U.S. rose to 2.7% in June, exceeding expectations, compared to 2.4% the previous month. In the United Kingdom, inflation reached 3.6%, indicating a more aggressive price surge compared to Europe.

These developments make the ECB’s decision to hold rates steady even more significant. However, reports from Washington suggesting possible tariff hikes—especially on steel—are raising concerns. With additional tariffs of up to 50% being discussed, many companies are reportedly postponing investment and employment plans.

U.S. President Donald Trump is once again taking center stage in global trade discourse, signaling a possible new era of tariff tensions. His recent remarks target not just specific countries, but major global economies including the European Union and parts of Asia.

In a pointed statement shared on social media, Trump declared: “If large countries don’t fully open their markets to U.S. products, I will impose much higher tariffs.” This bold stance has the potential to significantly shift global trade balances.

Japan Agreement: A Blueprint for the EU?

According to U.S. Commerce Secretary Lutnick, Japan has agreed to invest $550 billion in the U.S., and in return, Japanese exports to America will face a 15% tariff—substantially lower than the previously threatened 25% rate. Lutnick believes this deal could serve as a template for future trade negotiations with the European Union.

Clear Message to the EU: Align or Face Consequences

Lutnick emphasized that if the EU accepts U.S. products and standards, Trump would be open to a deal. Otherwise, the administration is prepared to escalate tariffs significantly. Trump is particularly focused on gaining access to the European market for U.S. cars, trucks, rice, and agricultural goods.

His message is simple: “Open your markets and tariffs come down. Refuse, and tariffs go up.”

China and H20 Chip Controls: A Delicate Balance

Trump’s trade strategy also includes ongoing discussions with China. Secretary Lutnick stated that if China continues to supply critical magnets, the U.S. will gradually lift H20 chip export controls. Trump reportedly believes China can maintain a balanced approach in its purchases of H20 products—hinting at another phase in the tech and trade tug-of-war.

What’s Next? Uncertain Terrain Ahead

Trump’s aggressive rhetoric has placed global industries—especially automotive, agriculture, and technology—on high alert. Nations doing business with the U.S. may soon have to choose between market liberalization or confronting a much tougher tariff regime.

Whether Trump’s threats are a negotiation tactic or a preview of a deeper economic policy shift remains to be seen. Either way, the tone is unmistakable: trade partners must act, or face steep costs.

Crypto Market Reacts

The trade tension has already started to ripple through risk markets. In the past four hours, the crypto market saw $305 million in liquidations. Bitcoin, under the weight of macroeconomic uncertainty, dropped 1.68% to around $117,950.

Annual inflation in the Eurozone reached 2.0% in June 2025, aligning with the European Central Bank (ECB)’s long-term target. According to preliminary data released by Eurostat, this marks a slight uptick from May’s reading of 1.9%.

This figure met economists’ expectations and signals that monetary policy efforts across Europe may finally be achieving their intended impact of taming inflation.

Services Inflation on the Rise

Among the key drivers, services inflation stood out in June. This category rose to 3.3%, up from 3.2% in May, although still below April’s 4% level. This uptick is especially relevant as services are a core component closely monitored by the ECB.

Core Inflation Holds Steady

Core inflation—which strips out volatile categories like energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco—remained flat at 2.3% in June. The stable figure reflects broader price pressures beginning to stabilize across the euro area.

Diverging Trends in Major Eurozone Economies

Inflation data from key euro area economies showed mixed signals. Germany saw a slight easing in harmonized inflation, France and Spain experienced modest increases, while Italy remained unchanged. Collectively, these variations helped push the overall euro area figure toward the ECB’s 2% benchmark.

A Cautious Outlook on Rates

Given the current inflation environment, analysts increasingly expect the ECB to hold interest rates steady at its next meeting on July 25. However, a potential 25 basis-point cut is still on the table for September.

ECB Chief Economist Philip Lane reinforced this outlook, stating:
“The cycle of bringing inflation down from 10% to 2% is done. But going forward, we must remain alert to ensure any deviation doesn’t affect the medium-term outlook.”
His comments reflect a continued data-dependent approach to monetary policy.

Risks Remain on the Horizon

Despite meeting the inflation target, economists warn of lingering risks that could derail the disinflation process. These include persistent services inflation, volatility in oil prices driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, and potential U.S. trade tariffs.

Inflation Breakdown for June 2025

According to the Eurostat flash estimate, here’s how the components of inflation fared in June:

Services: 3.3% (May: 3.2%)

Food, alcohol & tobacco: 3.1% (May: 3.2%)

Non-energy industrial goods: 0.5% (May: 0.6%)

Energy: -2.7% (May: -3.6%)

When Will Final Data Be Released?

Eurostat is set to publish the full inflation dataset for June on July 17, 2025. This release will be closely watched by policymakers and markets alike as the ECB prepares its next move.

The EU markets watchdog ESMA warned that as the crypto industry grows and becomes more interconnected with traditional finance, it could pose significant risks to financial stability. Speaking on April 8, ESMA’s Executive Director Natasha Cazenave told the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee: “Future sharp drops in crypto prices could have spillover effects on our financial system.”

Cazenave emphasized that crypto currently represents only 1% of global financial assets and is not yet a major threat. However, she pointed to rapidly increasing connections, especially in the more crypto-friendly US.

Concerns include spot crypto ETFs, stablecoin usage, hacks, scams, and high-profile collapses like the $1.4B Bybit exploit and FTX’s 2022 downfall.

To counter such risks, the EU has already rolled out the MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets) regulation. While Cazenave called MiCA a breakthrough, she stressed that “there is no such thing as a safe crypto-asset,” and additional regulations may be needed.

Europe Still Hesitant on Crypto

According to Cazenave, over 95% of European banks remain uninvolved in crypto-related activities. However, retail interest is increasing, with an estimated 10% to 20% of investors in Europe having some crypto exposure—reflecting broader global trends.

These warnings come amid recent double-digit drops in both crypto and stock markets, as macroeconomic uncertainties persist.

Global trade wars, inflationary pressures, geopolitical tensions and rising public debts are seriously shaking the foundations of the traditional financial system around the world. Such multifaceted macroeconomic stressors are questioning the sustainability of monetary policies, especially in developed economies. Trade tensions between the US and China, Europe and Russia, and even India and some regional actors are not only disrupting supply chains, but also weakening global growth expectations through the spread of tariffs and protectionist policies.

How Do Analysts React to This Situation?

Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, states that trade tariffs have not only economic but also strategic consequences. According to Dalio, these tariffs can reduce countries’ dependence on foreign production and capital, and thus prepare for great power conflicts. However, the inflationary effects of these policies should not be ignored. Dalio emphasizes that the rising debt levels of the US are unsustainable and that these imbalances must be remedied.

Cryptocurrency analyst Anthony Pompliano says that the decline in interest rates and the increase in global liquidity could positively affect the value of Bitcoin. Pompliano says that Bitcoin has an 83% correlation with global liquidity, and that cheap money entering the market could make BTC the biggest winner.

From this perspective, trade wars and economic uncertainties seem to direct investors to decentralized and limited-supply assets like Bitcoin. Bitcoin is called digital gold and is positioned as a hedge against inflationary pressures and economic fluctuations.

While global economic turmoil and trade wars are shaking trust in traditional financial systems, they are accelerating the adoption of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. While investors are looking for alternative solutions to the weaknesses of the current financial order, the value storage features and independent structure offered by Bitcoin make it an attractive option.
