U.S. President Donald Trump has once again intensified his criticism of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. At a time when expectations for a rate cut are growing, Trump’s statements have caught the attention of the markets. So, what will the Fed’s interest rate decision be?

In his recent remarks targeting Powell, Trump said:

“Powell is not a smart person. The Fed should cut interest rates.”

“There probably won’t be a rate cut decision today.”

“Interest rates should be at least two and a half points lower right now.”

“Powell is doing a poor job.”

“Can I appoint myself to the Fed? I’d do a much better job.”

Trump’s comments once again highlight the increasing political pressure on the Fed ahead of a potential interest rate decision.

Trump vs. the Fed: Tensions Continue to Escalate

Trump argued that lowering interest rates would reduce borrowing costs and accused Powell of failing in his role. While Trump has previously criticized Powell on multiple occasions, this time he took it a step further by asking, “Can I make myself Fed Chair?” — a statement that drew widespread attention.

Markets Remain Calm But On Edge Ahead of Fed Decision

Despite Trump’s sharp tone, the markets have remained relatively calm for now. However, such statements continue to raise questions among investors about the independence of the Fed. With the interest rate decision expected today, all eyes are once again on Powell.

Trump’s latest remarks clearly signal the mounting political pressure on the Fed. While markets have not reacted strongly yet, these statements could influence the central bank’s future interest rate policies.

The U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) will announce its interest rate decision tonight. In September, it made its first rate cut in nearly four and a half years, reducing rates by a significant 50 basis points. This time, analysts expect a smaller 25 basis point cut. After quickly moving past the U.S. elections, global markets are now focused on the Fed’s decision.

Why Do Markets Care About the Fed’s Decision?

The Fed’s interest rates are a key indicator for markets. When rates decrease, cash flow in the economy rises, which can lead investors to shift toward riskier assets. However, there is also a chance that the Fed may choose not to make any changes. Futures market data indicates a 1% likelihood of a 50 basis point cut, while a 25 basis point cut is expected with a 99% likelihood. In this case, the probability of no change in rates remains very low.

Political pressures on the Fed’s interest rate decision are a current topic. Former U.S. President Trump had pushed for rate cuts, reportedly telling Powell to “cut rates and wait.” These demands may have cast doubt on the Fed’s independence. However, Powell consistently emphasizes that they are an independent institution.

Powell’s Statements Eagerly Awaited

In today’s meeting, Powell’s statements will be as important as the Fed’s decision. While Powell may avoid commenting on the U.S. election results, he may give signals regarding interest rate policy. Powell consistently emphasizes the Fed’s independence from the government, a stance that strengthens his credibility.

This decision and the accompanying statements will be key in determining the short-term direction of the markets.

Although there are worries over inflation, the Federal Reserve made the decision to leave its benchmark interest rate intact. Even though he did not believe a rate hike to be close, Chairman of the Federal Reserve Jerome Powell did recognize the challenges of achieving a 2% inflation target. Though Powell did not give a date for the coming rate cut, he emphasized that inflation pressure should be known well enough to do so.

Immediately after the announcement, the news spread through the cryptocurrency market like a shockwave, as Bitcoin (BTC) shot up by around 3 percent. Following the FOMC, the leading cryptocurrency rapidly retracted most of the move and has since traded virtually unchanged.

Fears for ongoing inflation led the Federal Reserve to take the decision. New evidence of higher-than-anticipated rates of inflation and wage growth in the first quarter has just made these concerns even worse. Although the inflation rate has been on a declining trend ever since hitting multi-decade highs in 2022, it is still higher than the 2% per year target set by the Federal Reserve. Stability in the inflation data in comparison to the previous month—3.5% for the year ending in March—jostled the cryptocurrency markets instantly.

Rates have not been this high for more than 23 years due to the fact that the Federal Reserve has kept its benchmark interest rate between 5.25 and 5.5 percent since last July. Contrary to the Fed’s expected three quarter-point rate cuts for 2024, market players are now looking forward to one or no rate cut by year-end, a complete reverse from their early hopes. Given that inflation has not abated as fast as thought, significant cuts might still be on the table, Chairman Powell noted.

Powell told CNN at a Wilson Center panel that the FED is unlikely to drop interest rates soon, certainly not at the next meeting in two weeks, because inflation is not improving. This means rates will stay high for a while.

U.S. inflation jumped 3.5 percent between March 2023 and March 2024, according to Cryptopolitan. Most notably, Powell’s comments caused stock market swings, resulting in differing closing prices. Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 64 points, or 0.2%. The Nasdaq Composite lost 0.1% and the S&P 500 0.2%. Bond market participants saw the 2-year Treasury note yield exceed 5% yesterday before a little rebound brought it to around 4.96%.

According to Federal Reserve Chairman Powell, the latest numbers do not indicate that inflation is approaching the central bank’s 2% goal. Given the strong labor market and impending inflation success, it is wise to give the restrictive policy more time to work and let the data and shifting outlook guide us, he said.

Interest rates are at their highest in 23 years thanks to the Federal Reserve’s aggressive rate hikes two years ago. Inflation dropped substantially in the last summer of 2022 from its peak forty years ago, but the newest data shows that price pressure persists, notably in the housing and service industries.

Powell told CNN that the central bank will likely keep interest rates high at its next policy meeting in two weeks owing to inflation concerns. From March 2023 to March 2024, Cryptopolitan recorded 3.5% U.S. inflation. Powell told CNN that the central bank will not be able to decrease interest rates at the two-week policy meeting due to inflation difficulties, signaling that rates will remain high for a long time.

Powell Signals Prolonged High Interest Rates Amid Lingering Inflation Concerns

Following Powell’s remarks, the market was volatile and left the day with a mixed result. The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 64 points to reach 0.2%. Nevertheless, the S&P 50 lost 0.2% and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.1%. On Tuesday, the 2-year bond rate crossed above 5% only to recede to 4.96%.

Federal Reserve Chairman Powell said, “The recent data have clearly not given us greater confidence that inflation is headed toward the 2% target.” He continued, “Right now, given the strength of the labor market and progress on inflation so far, it’s appropriate to allow restrictive policy further time to work and let the data and evolving outlook guide us.”

Interest rates are at their highest in 23 years after two years of Federal Reserve hikes. Although it reached a 40-year low in summer 2022, the current inflation figures show persistent pricing pressure, particularly in services and housing.
