FIFA, the world’s leading football organization, is taking its interest in digital assets and Web3 technologies one step further by announcing the creation of its own Layer-1 (L1) blockchain network built on Avalanche’s infrastructure.

The upcoming FIFA Blockchain will be a customizable L1 chain based on Avalanche’s proprietary infrastructure, also known as a subnet. This development closely follows the recent Avalanche9000 upgrade, which aims to attract more developers and facilitate enterprise-level blockchain applications.

FIFA’s Previous Blockchain Initiatives

This move is not FIFA’s first entry into the blockchain space. Back in 2022, just ahead of the Qatar World Cup, FIFA launched an NFT collection via the Algorand network. In April 2024, FIFA signaled its intention to migrate that collection to an EVM-compatible blockchain, while reaffirming its commitment to broader Web3 initiatives.

FIFA Remains Committed Despite the NFT Slowdown

Although the NFT boom once attracted numerous corporations, interest faded significantly during the crypto winter. Still, FIFA’s ongoing involvement highlights that the potential of blockchain technology is far from exhausted, with major institutions continuing to explore the space.

John Nahas, Chief Business Officer at Ava Labs, stated:

“Avalanche was built to serve organizations in need of custom, high-performance blockchain solutions. FIFA’s choice to build its L1 using Avalanche reinforces the strength of our technology to deliver secure, flexible, and scalable applications globally.”

What’s Next for FIFA’s Blockchain?

Currently, FIFA offers a World Cup-themed NFT collection and a digital collectibles marketplace. However, the organization has not yet disclosed specific plans for future developments on its newly announced blockchain network.

FIFA’s initiative marks a significant milestone at the intersection of sports and blockchain, showcasing growing interest in tailored blockchain solutions for large-scale enterprises.

Back in March, comments by FIFA President Gianni Infantino about entering the crypto world triggered a rally in the price of FIFA Coin, a token created on the Pump.fun platform.

NFT Holders Must Take Action Before This Date

The migration process will start no earlier than May 20, 2025. If you hold FIFA NFTs outside the official platform, you must reimport them before this date — otherwise, you may lose the ability to trade them within the platform.

Why a New Blockchain?

According to FIFA’s official statement, the key goals of this migration are to:

Establish a stronger foundation for future innovations

Thanks to this new network, users can expect a smoother experience, and FIFA NFTs will become more compatible with broader Web3 platforms.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced that the football world wants to step into the crypto ecosystem.

Is FIFA Coin Coming?

Speaking at the summit, Gianni Infantino stated that FIFA is planning to develop its own digital asset. “The crypto world is growing, and we want to be part of this ecosystem,” Infantino said. While he did not share further details, his statement signaled FIFA’s potential entry into the crypto market.

Minutes after this announcement, a user on Pump.fun created a FIFA Coin, generating massive hype. The token quickly reached millions of dollars in market volume, attracting significant investor interest.

Trump’s Crypto Statements

The main focus of the summit was Donald Trump’s stance on crypto regulations. While Trump did not provide clear policy details, he made the following statements:

“America will never sell Bitcoin.”

U.S. and Stablecoin Policy

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized the role of stablecoins in the global financial system, stating:

World football’s governing body, FIFA, is set to launch a limited-edition NFT collection that will give owners the chance to watch the final match of the 2026 World Cup.

The collection will be released in two phases, with the first phase going on sale this weekend. The initial distribution will feature 100 digital collectibles, including the rarest collectibles that offer the chance to guarantee a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

A total of 900 more digital collectibles will be released on the Polygon network and made available on the OpenSea platform.

FIFA’s NFTs were originally minted on Algorand, but the organization is now planning to move to Polygon for the second phase of this collection. Polygon is a blockchain that is popular among Web3 gaming projects. The announcement also stated that Polygon will be used in future FIFA digital collection launches.

When FIFA first announced “FIFA+ Collect” last year, it was said to offer “football fans around the world the chance to own unique digital collectibles at an affordable price.”

The launch of the collection comes as the NFT market is in decline. FIFA Club World Cup 2023 is set to begin in Saudi Arabia tomorrow.

While NFT trading volumes have been rising in recent months, levels are still well below millions of dollars for some of the non-fungible tokens from PFPs from top collections such as Bored Ape Yacht Club. However, major brands have continued to pursue opportunities to serve and monetize super fans with their digital collection initiatives.

Modex took over (FIFA)

FIFA also announced that Modex will be taking over the “strategic management” of the digital collection platform, which has already dropped several football-branded collections.

Modex CEO Francesco Abbate said in a statement, “Digital collectibles are increasing the ways fans can interact with their favorite players, teams, and the game they love, and we are honored to support FIFA in achieving this goal.”
