XRP ETF: Spot ETF Excitement in Canada 

The delay in the XRP ETF application is influenced by the ongoing legal battle between Ripple and the SEC. A court ruling expected around August 15, 2025 (US time) will directly impact the ETF process. According to the market platform Polymarket, the approval probability for the XRP ETF is about 88%. If no issues arise on-chain, XRP ETF approval in the US could happen by the end of 2025. 

The legal dispute began in December 2020 when the SEC sued Ripple, alleging XRP was sold as an unregistered security. Ripple argues XRP is a digital asset, not a security. In a landmark interim ruling in July 2023, the court decided that XRP sold to individual investors on exchanges cannot be considered a security. This decision was a turning point favoring Ripple and led to a short-term price surge. However, the court sided with the SEC on institutional sales. The case is ongoing, with a final verdict expected on August 15, 2025. 

Meanwhile, developments in Canada have taken a different pace. Purpose Investments received approval from the Ontario Securities Commission on June 16, 2025. The first spot XRP ETF will begin trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange on June 18. Following this news, XRP price increased by about 7%. 

Solana ETF: Preparing for the “Altcoin Summer” with 90% Approval Expectation 

Bloomberg ETF analysts Eric Balchunas and James Seyffart estimate a 90% chance the Solana ETF will be approved before the end of 2025. This high likelihood is supported by the SEC’s request for staking-related information and the presence of Solana futures traded on CME. 

Analysts also point out that the “Altcoin ETF summer” is approaching. Following Solana, ETFs for other altcoins, especially Ethereum, may also reach approval stages.

Details of the Postponements

The SEC has postponed decisions on several high-profile ETF applications, including Grayscale’s filings for Dogecoin (DOGE), XRP, Litecoin (LTC), and Cardano (ADA). Additionally, Canary Capital, Bitwise, and 21Shares have also seen delays in their XRP ETF applications.

The regulator further delayed decisions on Solana (SOL) ETFs submitted by 21Shares, Canary, and VanEck. The last of the altcoin-related ETF postponements was Canary Capital’s Litecoin (LTC) filing.

Other crypto ETF delays include in-kind creation and redemptions for BlackRock IBIT ETF, as well as Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin ETF (FBTC) and Fidelity Ethereum ETF (FETH). Additionally, 21Shares’ Core Ethereum ETF proposal to include staking has also been postponed.

Despite these delays, the SEC has acknowledged new filings, including Grayscale’s Hedera (HBAR) ETF and Bitwise’s updated Dogecoin (DOGE) filing. Moreover, on March 11, Franklin Templeton filed an S-1 Form for its own XRP ETF, further intensifying the altcoin ETF race.

Strong Approval Odds for 2025!

Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart emphasized that these delays are part of standard procedure and should not raise concerns. He also noted that Paul Atkins has yet to be confirmed as the new SEC chair, which may have influenced the delay timeline.

In February, Seyffart and Bloomberg Senior ETF Analyst Eric Balchunas published their approval probability estimates for Litecoin (LTC), Solana (SOL), XRP, and Dogecoin (DOGE) ETFs. According to their analysis, Litecoin (LTC) leads with a 90% chance of approval in 2025, followed by Dogecoin (DOGE) at 75%. Solana (SOL) has a 70% probability, while XRP holds a 65% chance of approval.

The analysts highlighted that these approval odds were below 5% before Donald Trump’s election victory in November. Since then, regulatory sentiment has shifted, significantly increasing the likelihood of ETF approvals. If the regulatory environment continues to improve in the US, these odds may rise even further.

Initially holding a yet-unknown amount of bitcoin and ether weighted by the market capitalization of every digital asset, the ETF—also known as the Franklin Crypto Index ETF—would be the digital asset custodian of the proposed fund.

Should the fund get regulatory clearance, the S-1 filing indicates that future additional digital assets could be added to the ETF. Franklin Templeton’s EZPZ would also trade Exchange Cboe BZX, which filed paperwork seeking regulatory clearance for ETFs holding Solana in July. Franklin-Templeton’s filings match those of Hashdex, which registered its own S-1 for an ETF with a similar structure on July 24, two days after spot Ethereum ETFs were authorized to start trading. The SEC has lately delayed its ruling on Hashdex’s submission. The agency granted itself until September 30, 2024, to implement the suggested rule modification.
