This new feature from MetaMask, called “Social Login”, brings the user experience from Web2 to Web3 without compromising on security. How does the system work?

1. Log in with your Google or Apple account.
2. Set a strong, personal password.
3. MetaMask automatically generates your Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP) in the background.

The SRP created is accessible only through your social account and the password you set, stored locally on your device. Neither MetaMask nor Apple or Google can see this phrase—it remains completely under your control.

Why Social Login?

• Instant access: Skip the long recovery phrase process during wallet setup.
• Familiar process: Logging in with your Google or Apple account is something everyone is used to.
• Cross-device sync: Networks, tokens, and accounts can be automatically synchronized across new devices.

This new method also comes with some potential risks:

• Third-party dependency: Losing access to your social account could make it difficult to reach your wallet.
• Password security is critical: Losing your password can result in permanent loss of wallet access. As MetaMask warns, “if lost, the password cannot be recovered.”
• Privacy concerns: A small portion of your social account data may be stored in encrypted form; however, this is not as sensitive as a manually saved SRP.
