In a May 27 interview with The Washington Post, Musk admitted the “federal bureaucracy situation is much worse than expected,” calling the effort “an uphill battle.” DOGE, despite its bold goals, only achieved 8.5% of Musk’s original plan to cut $2 trillion from the budget. Reuters reported DOGE managed a 12% reduction in federal workforce—about 260,000 jobs.

Politics, Tesla, and the Media Spotlight

On May 28, Musk told Ars Technica he may have spent “a bit too much time” on politics, though he stressed the media exaggerated his involvement. “I didn’t leave the companies. It was just relative time allocation,” he said. Following Tesla’s Q1 report where Musk announced less time on DOGE, Tesla shares rose over 5%, despite an 80% drop in net income. Tesla still holds 11,509 Bitcoin, worth approximately $1.24 billion as of March 31.

Meanwhile, a federal judge has allowed a lawsuit to proceed, accusing Musk and DOGE of unconstitutional actions including unauthorized data access and unlawful termination of federal contracts. The case, filed by 14 states, could further challenge Musk’s foray into public service.
