According to a post on November 17, this decision points to a replacement manager developed by OpenAI called ChatGPT. The board conducted a “review process in search of compromise” concluding that Altman “consistently lacked sincerity in communication. Also, this hindered his ability to fulfill his roles”.

The board of directors of OpenAI said it was determined to develop forward-looking artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

“OpenAI was consciously structured to advance our mission: to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. The board of directors is fully committed to serving this mission. Mira is an extremely qualified name to take on the interim CEO role. We have the utmost confidence in her leadership ability during this transition period at OpenAI.”

The board also acknowledged that, “despite Sam Altman’s significant contributions to the establishment and growth of OpenAI” a new leader was needed. Board chairman Greg Brockman will also step down from his position. However, it will continue to serve as an “employee obligation to report to the CEO”.

The board is comprised of several people, including Adam D’Angelo, Tasha McCauley, Helen Toner, and OpenAI‘s chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever. While most of the board members are classified as “independent directors,” they represent a majority who do not own stocks in OpenAI. Sam Altman is also the founder of the crypto project Worldcoin and the developer group called Tools for Humanity.
