Crypto exchange Bybit has officially revealed the cause of the recent $1.5 billion hack. According to the company’s statement, the attack occurred due to a major infrastructure failure. How did this happen, and what does it mean for users? Here are the details!

As one of the leading cryptocurrency exchanges, Bybit has been at the center of a major security crisis. Company officials stated that a serious technical collapse in the exchange’s infrastructure allowed hackers to infiltrate the system. This vulnerability compromised Bybit’s security mechanisms, enabling attackers to steal $1.5 billion worth of assets.

You Might Be Interested In: Elon Musk Talks About the Name of a New Memecoin!

How Did the Attack Happen?

According to Bybit’s report, attackers identified security loopholes within the infrastructure and exploited them to gain unauthorized access. Initially appearing as a user account breach, the attack was later revealed to have directly targeted the company’s internal systems. Hackers managed to transfer massive amounts of funds to their own wallets by taking advantage of these weaknesses.

Are Bybit Users at Risk?

Following the large-scale attack, Bybit assured users that their funds would remain secure. The company announced that most of the stolen assets would be covered from its reserves and that user losses would be reimbursed. However, some analysts have raised concerns about how Bybit will manage such a significant financial hit in the long run.

Cryptocurrency exchange Bybit has intensified efforts to track and recover stolen funds after a massive $1.4 billion hack. In collaboration with blockchain analytics firms, investigations revealed over 11,000 wallets linked to North Korean hackers.

New Developments in the Bybit Hack

According to blockchain analytics firm Elliptic, the Lazarus Group, a North Korean hacking collective, has used 11,084 cryptocurrency wallets to launder stolen funds. The hackers are suspected of stealing funds from Bybit’s cold wallet. On February 25, Bybit CEO Ben Zhou announced a “war” against Lazarus Group.

You Might Be Interested In: Elon Musk Talks About the Name of a New Memecoin!

To recover the stolen funds, Bybit has taken several steps, including the launch of a new blacklist wallet API and a reward system to track wallets and initiate legal action. Elliptic also released a public list of wallet addresses linked to North Korean hackers, helping the community avoid exposure to these addresses.

Elliptic and Bybit’s Collaboration

According to Elliptic’s data, all 11,084 wallets are associated with the Bybit hack. Data on these wallets became accessible within just 30 minutes, allowing Bybit users to continue trading without risking exposure to the stolen funds.

Bybit continues to work with blockchain security firm ZeroShadow to trace the stolen funds. ZeroShadow is tasked with identifying and freezing stolen assets from cold wallets.

Bybit Hack and Fund Transfers

According to blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis, the Bybit hack began with a phishing attack and later intercepted a routine transfer from Bybit‘s Ethereum cold wallet to a hot wallet. Stolen ETH was converted into Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies and moved across different networks.

Despite the massive breach, Bybit kept withdrawals open to maintain platform stability and secured liquidity through external loans. On February 25, Bybit started repaying the stolen funds, transferring 40,000 ETH back to Bidget.

Recently, the cryptocurrency exchange known as Rain in Bahrain experienced a significant security compromise. According to the findings of blockchain expert ZachXBT, the exchange had a loss of $14.8 million on April 29, 2024. Ever since the hack, the criminals’ wallets, which contained 1,881 ETH and 137.9 BTC, have remained unaltered.

According to ZachXBT, it appears that the cryptocurrency exchange Rain was most likely defrauded out of $14.8 million when their Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solcoin, and XRP wallets noted some odd withdrawals occurred. He stated that Bitcoin and Ethereum may be transferred to quick exchanges in a short amount of time.

A wallet with the final letter of d609 received a number of transactions from Bitgo multisignature wallets, and according to additional data, the Ethereum cash ended up in that wallet during the course of the transactions. The day of the breach, there were a total of 26 transactions that took place from these wallets to the d609 wallet. These transactions included the transfer of ETH as well as other currencies. In a short amount of time, customers of Uniswap swapped more than 590 ETH for further ETH, coupled with around 20 billion Shiba Inus, 12,500 Chainlink, $240,000 in Tether, and $250,000 in USD Coin.

As the situation evolved, Arkham Intelligence noticed that the d609 address was trading ETH for a variety of tokens, including Aave, Yearn Finance, and MakerDAO. These transactions were taking place. Given the intricate nature of this web of transactions, the sophisticated methods that hackers use to avoid detection are on plain show.

Rain Incident Sparks Crypto Security Concerns

The Rain incident suggests a crypto industry problem. Similar attacks and exploits cost investors $2 billion last year, and $333 million in the first quarter. Another trade protocol flaw cost $600,000, but a 10% bug bounty recovered most of it.

On May 6, the Gnus AI community lost $1.27 million in a Discord breach days after the Rain attack. After accessing team members’ private conversations, the attackers minted 100 million fraudulent GNUS tokens crashed the price. The company has since advised users to avoid buying the undervalued coin and is taking steps to limit the impact.

A smart contract vulnerability hacked Galaxy Fox Web3 on May 10. Attackers stole over 108 ETH, underscoring the need for better web3 security and access limits, especially on NFT and play-to-earn platforms.

On May 10, a TRUSU Wrapper contract weakness caused major transaction processing issues for Tsuru. This vulnerability allowed custom code to bypass contract operations, causing out-of-gas issues and transaction disruptions.

These instances across platforms demonstrate the financial losses and operational interruptions caused by hacks and highlight the need for stronger bitcoin and Web3 security.

An imposter allegedly announced the Spider-Man star’s “Spiderverse” launch in collaboration with Binance, a worldwide cryptocurrency exchange, on the account, which has over 7 million followers. In addition to promoting the fake SPIDER cryptocurrency and Spiderverse NFTs, the hijacked account linked to a fake website that claimed early access to the products. Early screenshots revealed an unknown man’s selfie on the actor’s X page, adding to the suspicion of a hack.

The post, since removed, displayed the suspected hacker’s inverted face, his mask pulled down to his chin. The description of the post by the possibly hacker, who may have curly hair, read, “Would u kiss me while I hang from my web xxx?” a reference to the famous upside-down kiss from the original Spider-Man film starring Tobey Maguire.

He deleted the post after it was pinned to his profile. Furthermore, the timing of this break is perfect, because on April 15, select theaters will show Sam Raimi’s 2002 film again.

Following the event, a swarm of posts from confused fans ensued. Others took advantage of the strange turn of events to make fun of Holland, while others were relieved that he hadn’t actually supported cryptocurrency.

“How do you hack Tom Holland’s Twitter account and make the stupidest tweets ever instead of having ur chance to fake tease Spider-Man 4 and go crazy?” was one of several memes that sprung up online as fans seized the opportunity to mock the circumstances.

Others, however, were merely delighted to learn that the crypto plan had spared them the loss of their beloved webslinger. Someone wrote online: “okay nvm tom holland was hacked he is redeemed really thought we lost another man to disappointment!”

Marvel’s Venture into Web3: Spider-Man NFTs

Even though Holland’s “Spiderverse” article is obviously not real, Marvel has tested the waters of web3.

American movie theater company AMC and Sony Pictures partnered to make thousands of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) available to anyone who bought early tickets to Holland’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” in late 2021. It became a huge success, earning over $1.9 billion at the box office. The NFT ploy helped propel AMC to its second-highest ever single-day ticket sales.

Before then, VeVe, an NFT company based in New Zealand, had partnered with Marvel to offer NFTs featuring Spider-Man. VeVe, one of the NFTs, published the original Marvel comic book in 1939. X-Men, Spider-Man, and other Marvel heroes appeared in NFT comics produced earlier this year by VeVe, an Ethereum-powered digital collectibles platform.

Disappointing developments have occurred for the Fantom project listed on Binance. It was claimed that the hot wallets belonging to Fantom were attacked.

Fantom Foundation oversees developments on the Fantom blockchain, but the recent attack caused losses for both FTM and Ethereum. Individuals conducting research discovered that the attacker moved the stolen assets from a wallet holding 4500 Ethereum to another wallet.

The company stated that attackers targeted only a small portion of their wallets and that the total loss amounted to approximately $550,000. Detailed research on the subject is ongoing at the moment.

Reports stating that thieves attacked the hot wallets purportedly belonging to the Fantom Foundation, containing FTM, and stole a substantial amount of FTM, led to a significant drop in the value of the FTM altcoin.

We are carefully following the developments regarding the attack. The community is waiting for future updates to learn the measures taken by companies and the real dimensions of the incident.

According to the announcement, “The Arena will reopen on Sunday with trading functionality suspended. A separate announcement will be made about the resumption of trading shortly after restarting.”

Stars Arena managed to recover approximately 90% of the funds frozen as a result of the attack. The team confirmed that the recovery was the result of negotiations with the person responsible for the attack. It was stated that the attacker returned 239,493 AVAX in exchange for a 10% reward.

However, the platform has currently suspended its trading functionality until it undergoes a full audit process. The Stars Arena team stated, “Trading will only continue after the full audit is published and the contract is made open source for community review.”

Stars Arena is a chain-level social finance application built on the Avalanche blockchain. The platform offers users the ability to buy tokens and access chat rooms. The application, operating as a forked iteration of FriendTech, is attracting wide interest from the crypto community.

Platypus Finance, a leading decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol operating on the Avalanche network, suffered a serious security breach resulting in a loss of over $2 million, according to information released by cybersecurity firm PeckShield.

You might like: Cipher.fan (A New SocialFi Application!)

Platypus Finance quickly responded to this breach by temporarily suspending all liquidity pools. The project issued a statement on the matter, saying, “We have taken necessary measures to temporarily suspend all pools due to suspicious activities in our protocol. Other updates will be promptly relayed to the community.”

A flash loan attack is exploiting this security gap, specifically targeting the AVAX-sAVAX liquidity pool. Flash loans are a critical feature of decentralized finance that allows users to borrow assets without collateral, but with the condition of repaying the loan within the same transaction block.

Unfortunately, this type of security breach is not a new situation for Platypus Finance. The protocol encountered a similar event in February 2023 targeting the newly launched stablecoin USP in a flash loan attack. During this previous event, perpetrators stole an estimated $8.5 million from the project.

The FTX Hacker moved the stolen funds 10 months later. The identity and specific techniques used by the perpetrator continued to remain a mystery in the multi-million dollar hack case before the sudden transfers.

According to data from Arkham Intelligence, the FTX hacker, who owns over $300 million in assets, first moved on September 30th, 10 months later. The address still owns 12.5K ETH. A total of $8 million was transferred on September 30 through the Railgun privacy wallet and Thorchain.

You might like: What are Binance Options? How to Use?

Arkham’s data revealed two transactions in which the hacker transferred 2,500 ETH, each transaction was worth $4 million. The FTX breach occurred on November 11, 2022, shortly after FTX filed for bankruptcy and following the departure of its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried.

During this incident, the unknown attacker managed to leak over $600 million worth of Ether, briefly becoming the 35th largest holder of Ethereum.

Initially, the hacker deposited the stolen coins into CoinMixer, an anonymous Bitcoin mixing service designed to make it difficult to track on-chain Bitcoin transfers.

To further obfuscate the tracking of funds, the asset chose various swaps and bridge transfers.

Following the event, famous on-chain detective ZackXBT speculated that after withdrawing from the mixer, the hacker likely transferred these funds to the crypto exchange OKX.

HTX Fell Victim to Hack! HTX exchange CEO Justin Sun announced that he was attacked, which led to a loss of 5,000 Ethereum ($7.9 million).

After HTX fell victim to the hack attack Justin Sun shared to assure customers via ‘X’ ” HTX, has suffered a loss of 5,000 Ethereum due to a hacker attack.” “HTX, has fully covered the losses caused by the attack and successfully resolved all related issues.” He said.

Justin Sun said that the stolen ether “represents a small amount compared to the $3 billion worth of assets in our users’ hands.” Sun also stressed that the stolen cryptocurrencies were only equivalent to the exchange’s two-week income.

“Our security team will assist in tracking hacker funds whenever possible.” He said.

The theft occurred just two weeks after the decade-old crypto exchange Huobi changed its name to HTX. The Offshore trading platform hopes that rebranding will make its name known in many countries and make several changes in the future.

Huobi Becomes ‘HTX’

Crypto exchange Huobi changed its name to HTX to celebrate its tenth anniversary. It was noticed that this name bears a mysterious similarity to the bankrupt FTX company.

Additionally the exchange had already changed its brand on social media accounts. Along with this, it has also changed various product groups like HTX Earn to suit the new brand.

In the announcement made by the exchange, “‘H’ represents Huobi, ‘T’ represents TRON and ‘X’ represents the exchange. When looking at HTX through the combination of HT and X, HT represents the platform’s native token and X represents the exchange symbol.

They added that the X is a Roman numeral in respect of the exchange’s tenth anniversary.

According to the announcement made in the morning, Mixin Network’s cloud service provider’s database was attacked, resulting in a million dollars hack against Mixin Network. Therefore, withdrawal and deposit operations were suspended. After this hacking attempt, Mixin token XIN fell by 9%.

The company contacted Google and blockchain security companies for this hacking attack and asked for help. According to initial determinations, the affected funds are approximately worth 200 million dollars.
