Institutional Exposure Drops Sharply

According to a new report by CoinShares, institutional exposure to Bitcoin ETFs dropped from $27.4 billion in Q4 2024 to $21.2 billion in Q1 2025 — a 23% decline.

However, this decrease was largely driven by an 11% drop in Bitcoin’s price rather than widespread selling. Still, some investors did actively reduce their positions, contributing to the overall decline.

Financial Advisors Buck The Trend

Interestingly, financial advisors went against the broader trend, slightly increasing their Bitcoin ETF holdings during the same period. The report suggests a shift from short-term profit-seeking to long-term reserve and treasury strategies, particularly among corporations.

While professional money managers pulled back, companies continued accumulating Bitcoin for their treasuries, suggesting growing confidence in its role as a store of value.

BlackRock ETF Faces Record Outflow

On May 30, BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) experienced a record $430 million in outflows — a sharp reversal after 31 consecutive days of inflows. This marks a moment of reevaluation in institutional trust in ETFs.

Despite that, corporate treasuries holding Bitcoin grew to over 1.98 million BTC by the end of Q1, up 18.6% year-to-date. According to SaylorTracker, Strategy acquired 15,355 BTC on April 28 alone and has accumulated BTC in 17 of the 20 weeks leading up to June 2025.

Some analysts believe Bitcoin’s long-term gains may be fueled more by weakening demand for US bonds than by ETF inflows, indicating a shift in macroeconomic investment logic.

The April 7 ARKB sale marked one of ARK’s largest daily dumps of the ETF this year. The firm had previously sold $8 million in March, $8.6 million in February, and $3.5 million in January.

Despite the latest sell-off, ARKW still holds $142 million in ARKB, representing 11% of the fund’s total weight — keeping significant indirect exposure to Bitcoin intact.

Bitcoin ETFs Bleed Amid Market Panic

The broader Bitcoin ETF market took a hit following Trump’s tariffs. Bitcoin dropped 11% to $74,700. Data shows that global Bitcoin ETPs saw $207 million in outflows between April 1 and 7, with an additional $109 million leaving the market on April 7 alone.

Across the last three trading days, Bitcoin ETFs lost a combined $273 million, per SoSoValue. Still, ARK remains among the few spot Bitcoin ETF issuers with net positive flows in 2025, totaling $146 million by April 4.

Other notable inflows came from BlackRock’s iShares ($3.2B) and ProShares ($398M), according to CoinShares.

GBTC had experienced billions of dollars in outflows after it began trading as an ETF in January, coinciding with the downturn in the cryptocurrency market and the approval of other Bitcoin ETFs.

During this period, the total amount of Bitcoin held in GBTC dropped from over 600,000 to around 290,000. One of the main reasons for this was GBTC’s higher management fee compared to other funds.

This net inflow into GBTC can be interpreted as a renewed interest in Bitcoin. The fund’s asset value has also been on an upward trend lately.
