Has Satoshi Nakamoto Been Found? Who Are the Possible Candidates?

HBO has prepared a new documentary aimed at uncovering the identity of Bitcoin’s mysterious creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Titled “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery,” this documentary addresses speculations about Satoshi Nakamoto’s identity and suggests that recognized figures in the field of cryptography, such as Adam Back, Nick Szabo, and Len Sassaman, could be potential candidates.

The documentary focuses on the evaluation of these three individuals as possible Satoshi Nakamoto candidates based on speculations in the decentralized betting market, Polymarket.

Has the Mystery of Satoshi Nakamoto Been Solved?

The identity of Satoshi Nakamoto is a significant topic in Bitcoin’s history. Nakamoto withdrew from the project in December 2010, and since then, numerous misidentifications and claims have emerged. One of the most notable incidents was in 2014 when *Newsweek* identified California-based physicist Dorian Nakamoto as the creator of Bitcoin. Following this, themed memecoins featuring Dorian were created on the Arbitrum, Ethereum, and Solana platforms.

A year later, in 2015, *Gizmodo* and *Wired* introduced Australian computer scientist Craig Steven Wright as Satoshi. However, an English court definitively ruled that Wright did not create Bitcoin. There are claims that Wright’s late colleague, David Kleiman, also played a role in Bitcoin’s creation; however, neither Wright nor Kleiman has been able to sign any transactions that would prove they control the Bitcoins.

Thus, the claims about both individuals have been fabricated.

New Satoshi Candidates Have Emerged!

Over the years, many potential candidates for Satoshi have been suggested. Following HBO’s documentary, Len Sassaman and Adam Back’s names have been put forward.

Is Len Sassaman Satoshi?

In 2021, Evan Leung Hatch claimed that Len Sassaman was Satoshi. Sassaman was a coder who died by suicide at the age of 31 and had close ties with the Father of Cryptography, David Chaum. However, Sassaman’s wife stated that she did not believe her husband created Bitcoin.

Could Adam Back Be Satoshi?

Adam Back is one of only ten people cited in the original Bitcoin technical paper. Back founded the Bitcoin development company Blockstream and was one of the first two people to initiate correspondence with Satoshi. However, Back has repeatedly denied these claims and argued that Satoshi’s remaining anonymous would help Bitcoin be perceived as a commodity.

HBO’s documentary reopens the discussion on how the efforts to identify Satoshi Nakamoto have evolved and the impact of the creator’s identity on the cryptocurrency world. It remains to be seen how this documentary will resonate within the crypto community and whether it will lead to potential memecoin movements.

Deceased computer scientist and privacy activist Len Sassaman has suddenly become well-known as bookmakers anticipate that HBO‘s next documentary would expose Satoshi Nakamoto as the enigmatic founder of Bitcoin.

Whether Sassaman was the actual Bitcoin inventor or not, his life was noteworthy. Born in Pennsylvania, Sassaman was a cryptography master drawn to the San Francisco computer environment in his late teens. He joined the cypherpunk movement, a group of privacy-oriented computer scientists influencing the direction of encryption. Working on projects like Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) and GNU Privacy Guard, both absolutely essential online privacy, Sassaman studied under blockchain creator David Chaum. Together with his wife Meredith Patterson, he also started the SaaS company Osogato.

Sadly, Sassaman died by himself in 2011 at the age of thirty-one while still a doctoral in electrical engineering student in Belgium. Bitcoin’s blockchain at Block 138725 bears a memorial to him in honor. Though Patterson, who was married to Sassaman until his death, has said publicly she does not think he was Nakamoto.

This view is supported by circumstensive evidence. Based on what would be needed to create Bitcoin, Sassaman’s broad expertise of privacy, financial systems, and cryptography fits. Further mystery is added by linguistic study of his writing style and Nakamoto’s as well as the disappearance of Nakamoto’s online presence two months before Sassaman’s death.

Still unchangeable, Nakamoto’s $64 billion worth of Bitcoin adds to the continuous mystery around the actual name of the Bitcoin inventor.

A distributed prediction tool, Polymarket has witnessed a lot of conjecture about Satoshi Nakamoto, the actual inventor of Bitcoin. Currently ranking Len Sassaman, an American computer scientist, as the top contender to be identified as Nakamoto in an upcoming HBO documentary, Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, scheduled to premiere on October 8, is the platform preferring.

Cullen Hoback’s direction of the movie is said to clarify Nakamoto’s identify. Though neither Hoback nor HBO have said if the documentary will unequivocally expose who Nakamoto is, both have hinted at such in advertising materials. Consequently, the Polymarket betting pool now has total volume of $389,738 and Sassaman is the odds-on favorite.

Known for his participation in the Cypherpunk movement and support of privacy-enhancing technologies, Sassaman, who died in 2011 at the age of 31, Though he has no obvious relationship to Bitcoin, his history has spurred rumors that he might have been the mysterious Bitcoin inventor.

Source: Wikimedia Commons
Portrait of Len Sassaman

Although Hal Finney, Adam Back, Craig Wright, and Nick Szabo are other strong candidates in the Polymarket pool, Sassaman presently ranks highest. The market rules state that should the HBO documentary find Sassaman as the main innovator behind Bitcoin, the market will correct in his advantage.

The crypto world is keenly expecting any possible disclosures on Satoshi Nakamoto’s actual identity, only days before the documentary’s premiere.
