How Ark Works

The Ark network relies on Ark Service Providers (ASPs) that users connect to through Ark-compatible wallets. ASPs function as trustless servers. Upon receiving a deposit, they issue “virtual transactions” to users. These virtual transactions can be:

Riard reported that he discovered a new type of attack on the Lightning project, a second layer solution targeting low-cost and fast transactions on Bitcoin.

This type of attack, called “relayed loop attacks,” involves the manipulation of payments on the Lightning Network where honest transactions should be made by malicious actors. This situation may lead to either a loss of funds or a loss of service for network users.

Riard emphasized that he followed a responsible notification process and reported the issue to senior Lightning developers. However, at the same time, he warned that a sustainable solution to such a problem would only be possible at Bitcoin’s base layer. This could require consensus updates or a significant change in full node transaction requirements.

Riard stated that he faced a tough dilemma between explaining why such changes are necessary for Lightning’s future and unearthing critical attacks targeting this network containing more than 5,000 BTC. As a result, Riard announced that he will cease development of the Lightning Network and related applications and focus more on the Bitcoin Core, the main software client for Bitcoin.
