Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal has initiated a preliminary investigation into Trump’s crypto projects. Blumenthal stated that these projects are risky due to a lack of transparency and potential conflicts of interest. Meanwhile, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren suggested that Trump’s crypto reserve plans could favor certain actors in the industry. Warren emphasized that this could lead to market unfairness. 

Furthermore, Democrats believe Trump’s crypto moves are undermining the legislative process. For instance, the passage of the stablecoin legislation GENIUS Act is at risk due to the President’s family’s crypto connections. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer is calling on party members to withhold support for this bill. 

Trump Family’s Crypto Revenues 

The Trump Organization and its affiliates hold 80% of the $TRUMP token. According to Chainalysis, token trading generated $900,000 in transaction fees in just two days. World Liberty Financial raised $550 million, with 75% of its revenue going to the Trump family. This has led to “pay to play” criticisms. Democrats claim this revenue model carries corruption risks. 

White House Response 

In response to the criticisms, the White House stated that Trump’s assets are managed by a trust run by his children. Spokesperson Anna Kelly defended that there is no conflict of interest. However, Democrats find this explanation insufficient. In the House Financial Services Committee, Maxine Waters held a session focused on Trump’s crypto projects. Waters claimed that Trump’s goal of making the US the “crypto capital” serves personal interests. 

As the President’s crypto empire grows, the Democrats’ reaction is intensifying. Investigations and legislative obstacles could complicate Trump’s crypto plans. The future of the cryptocurrency market appears to depend on the outcome of this political tug-of-war.

Bitcoin Reserve Controversy

In his letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Gerald E. Connolly stated that the proposed cryptocurrency reserve by the Trump administration lacks economic justification. He further warned that the government favoring specific digital assets through social media could disrupt the market.

According to Connolly, establishing such a reserve holds no strategic benefit for taxpayers. The Federal Reserve (FED) also criticized the initiative, calling it “the dumbest idea ever.”

Trump and Crypto Conflict of Interest

Connolly pointed out that the Trump administration did not consult Congress before moving forward with the Bitcoin reserve plan and did not receive any official authorization. He also accused Trump of a conflict of interest, as the Trump Organization owns the crypto platform World Liberty Financial and has profited significantly from the Official Trump (TRUMP) memecoin.

The Democrat lawmaker described the TRUMP token as “Trump’s most lucrative get-rich scheme yet.” Other Democrats, including Maxine Waters, also criticized the token, arguing that Trump’s crypto initiatives do not serve the public good.

Treasury Department’s Response Awaited

Connolly has requested the U.S. Treasury Department to provide documents detailing the creation of the Bitcoin reserve and to clarify what steps the Trump administration has taken to prevent conflicts of interest. He also inquired about which crypto assets the government currently holds.

Meanwhile, the White House stated that the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve would only consist of cryptocurrencies seized in federal criminal or civil cases and would be managed through budget-neutral strategies. The Digital Asset Stockpile, on the other hand, would include non-Bitcoin cryptocurrencies, such as XRP, Solana, Cardano, and Ethereum.

The Democrat sent a letter to CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Chief Operating Officer Javier Olivan on Monday expressing her concerns about the company’s five trademark applications related to digital assets filed last year.

The applications were for projects including a digital currency exchange, designing blockchain-related computer hardware, and an “online social networking and dating” service that would allow for “cryptocurrency exchange and other forms of virtual currency.”

Maxine Waters has criticized Meta‘s entry into cryptocurrency, particularly its Libra stablecoin project. Facebook later said it planned to launch Libra, now known as Diem, in 2019, and this quickly sparked concerns among regulators and lawmakers who were hesitant about a stablecoin linked to the social media company.

Before Diem’s demise, Waters said she and other lawmakers sent a letter to Meta in 2019 demanding a moratorium on ongoing work on the proposed digital wallet Libra and Calibra due to privacy and national security concerns.

In her letter, Waters said a Meta employee told committee Democrats in October that “there is no ongoing digital asset work at Meta.”

“Meta personnel indicated that the company is not currently conducting or planning any work on blockchain-based products or stablecoins,” Waters said.

“Meta personnel also asserted that Meta is not working with any partners to integrate stablecoins or cryptocurrency into any payment or Metaverse product, and is not conducting research and development in this area.”

However, Waters said Meta’s trademark applications suggest that Meta did not cease operations after shutting down Diem.

“The trademark applications filed by Meta in 2023 suggest that the company may be looking to revive its digital asset ambitions,” Maxine Waters said. “This is concerning given the potential risks associated with digital assets, including fraud, market manipulation, and consumer protection concerns.”

Waters asked Zuckerberg and Olivan to provide the committee with a response to her letter by February 28.
