A large-scale security breach that sent shockwaves through the blockchain world caused sudden and sharp price movements in the crypto markets. According to on-chain analyst ZachXBT, a hardware wallet–related social engineering attack that took place on January 10, 2026 resulted in the theft of more than $282 million worth of Bitcoin and Litecoin. The rapid conversion of the stolen funds into Monero triggered a notable surge in the price of XMR.

How Did the Hardware Wallet Attack Happen?

According to information shared by ZachXBT, the attacker gained access to the victim’s hardware wallet using social engineering techniques. As a result of permissions unknowingly granted by the user, control of the wallet was compromised. Addresses identified during the attack reportedly held around 1,459 BTC and 2.05 million LTC. After the funds were seized, they were quickly transferred across multiple networks in an effort to complicate tracking.

The attacker converted a large portion of the stolen Bitcoin and Litecoin into Monero through instant swap services. Monero’s privacy-focused design and limited traceability are believed to be the main reasons it was chosen. ZachXBT noted that these rapid and heavy conversions caused unusually high transaction volumes on the Monero network.

ZachXBT stated: “Sudden conversions from BTC and LTC into Monero directly triggered the sharp rise in XMR’s price.”

ZachXBT also revealed that part of the stolen Bitcoin was bridged across different blockchains using THORChain. Through this method, the funds were not kept on a single network but were instead distributed across Ethereum, Ripple, and Litecoin networks in fragments. Experts say such multi-chain movements are intended to make fund tracking more difficult and to further complicate on-chain analysis, highlighting a deliberate effort by the attackers to cover their tracks.

XMR Price Shows Strong Surge

Following the incident, Monero climbed to nearly $800 during the week, approaching a new high and recording a striking 74% increase in a short period. This rally was supported by a sudden spike in demand and trading volume. Although the price later pulled back to around $630 at the time of reporting, the correction remained limited, with roughly 46% of the gains still intact. Analysts suggest that holding these levels indicates continued strong interest in Monero.

Assessment

This incident once again underscores how critical hardware wallet security and awareness of social engineering attacks are for the crypto ecosystem. It also clearly demonstrates how large-scale fund movements can rapidly impact market dynamics through headlines such as Monero price surge, XMR rally, and Bitcoin and Litecoin theft. The case uncovered by ZachXBT shows that similar attacks—and their effects on the market—will continue to be closely monitored.

One of the most notable performances in the cryptocurrency market in recent days has come from Monero (XMR). The privacy-focused cryptocurrency has gained strong momentum in a short period, putting it firmly on investors’ radar. XMR has reached new all-time highs for the first time in eight years, sending a strong breakout signal to the market. So why is Monero rising, and is this move sustainable?

Monero (XMR) Price Achieves a Strong Breakout

As of January 2026, Monero’s price has risen by approximately 35% on a weekly basis, reaching the $570 range. With this surge, XMR tested new all-time highs for the first time since 2018. During the same period, Monero’s market capitalization climbed above $10.5 billion, placing the project back among the largest crypto assets. The sharp move seen on the charts points to a clear trend reversal following a long phase of sideways price action.

The Privacy Narrative Regains Strength

One of the main drivers behind Monero’s rally is the renewed interest in privacy-focused cryptocurrencies. At a time when global regulatory pressure is intensifying, users are placing greater importance on on-chain transaction privacy, boosting demand for XMR. In particular, technical and governance issues affecting alternative privacy projects have helped redirect capital toward Monero.

Monero’s limited presence on major centralized exchanges has also amplified price reactions amid rising demand. With most of the circulating supply already in the market and limited additional token issuance pressure, increasing demand can translate more directly into price appreciation. This supply dynamic has become a key factor supporting the rally.

What Do Derivatives Data and Technical Indicators Say?

In derivatives markets, a notable rise in open interest has been observed, suggesting that the rally is not driven solely by spot purchases and that fresh capital continues to enter the market.

From a technical perspective:

MACD and moving averages support a strong uptrend

RSI is approaching the overbought zone but has not yet produced a clear bearish signal

Sustained price action above $550 suggests that the $600 level could come into focus in the short term

Overall, Monero’s recent move reflects a combination of a strengthening privacy narrative, favorable supply dynamics, and supportive technical signals, all of which are contributing to its standout performance in the current market environment.

Market Volume and Investor Behavior

The sector’s 24-hour trading volume approaching $3 billion and total market capitalization near $25 billion demonstrate a strong market movement. This growth suggests that privacy-focused coins are gaining value in the eyes of investors and have significant potential despite short-term volatility.

Investors are increasingly seeking high-yield opportunities with ZEC and DASH while valuing the security and anonymity these tokens provide. LTC and XMR remain key choices for those looking for stable growth and diversified portfolios.

The Future of Privacy Coins

Privacy coins enable anonymous and untraceable transactions on the blockchain, supporting financial freedom in the digital era. The recent weekly surge highlights that this sector will continue to attract investor attention and potential opportunities in the crypto market.

2025 was a dynamic and surprising year for the cryptocurrency markets. While Bitcoin (BTC) reached new record highs and Ethereum (ETH) also staged strong rallies, the real standout story of the year was the relatively overlooked privacy coins. Despite receiving little coverage in mainstream media, these altcoins delivered higher returns than both Bitcoin and Ethereum in 2025, surprising many investors.

Privacy Coins Become the Best-Performing Crypto Sector of 2025!

According to fresh data published by Artemis, privacy-focused cryptocurrencies surged by 71.6% in 2025, outperforming all other sectors.

For comparison:

Bitcoin (BTC): +27.1%

Ethereum (ETH): +33.4%

Exchange Tokens: +47.4%

Store-of-Value Assets: +9.5%

Other sectors: Mostly losses

This picture shows that during the bull market, investors were not only focused on BTC and ETH but also shifted toward more niche and relatively riskier assets.

Zcash (ZEC) Leads the Rally!

Among privacy coins, Zcash (ZEC) delivered the most striking performance of 2025. Within just one month, ZEC gained 247%, reaching its highest level in three years.

The key catalyst behind this surge was the launch of Grayscale’s Zcash Trust product. This new investment vehicle allowed accredited investors to gain exposure to ZEC without directly purchasing the token. The development not only boosted institutional interest but also created significant demand pressure on the price.

As of September 2025, ZEC was trading at $146.65, up 0.9% on the day, maintaining its rally momentum.

Monero (XMR) Maintains Its Strength

As one of the most established names in the sector, Monero (XMR) also delivered a strong performance. With a market capitalization of around $6.1 billion, Monero maintained its leading position while showing steady growth throughout 2025.

Last week, XMR gained 14%. Although it did not surge as dramatically as ZEC, it still outperformed BTC and ETH, drawing investor attention. The continued demand for privacy-focused transactions further strengthens Monero’s role within the crypto ecosystem.

Why Are Privacy Coins on the Rise?

Analysts attribute the extraordinary performance of privacy tokens in 2025 to several key factors:

Capital Rotation: Investors redirected profits from BTC and ETH into other sectors, triggering new capital inflows into privacy coins.

Late-Cycle Performance: Historical data shows that privacy coins tend to rally more strongly in the later stages of bull markets.

Regulatory Uncertainty: Tightening regulations in the U.S. and Europe have increased interest in privacy-focused solutions.

Growing Adoption: Beyond the darknet, ZEC and XMR are increasingly used for cross-border payments, financial privacy, and by individuals seeking to navigate regulations, supporting demand.

The Future of Privacy Coins: Will the Rise Continue in 2026?

According to CryptoRank analysis, privacy coins don’t only surge during speculative cycle peaks. Data shows that ZEC and XMR move in sync with Bitcoin and gain value across different market phases.

One of the oldest assets in the crypto world, Monero (XMR), is reportedly under a 51% attack. Experts claim that this attack, allegedly carried out by the Qubic mining pool, has been successful.

Attack Details

Charles Guillemet, CTO of hardware wallet producer Ledger, stated:

“We detected major changes in the Monero chain this morning. Qubic mining pool has been working for months to grow its hashrate capacity. With its current power, Qubic can rewrite the blockchain, perform double spending, and censor any transaction.”

A 51% attack occurs when more than half of a blockchain’s control power is taken over by a single entity. This poses significant security risks, especially for privacy-focused altcoin projects.

What is a 51% Attack?

This attack happens when an entity controls more than 50% of the network’s hash power, enabling them to censor transactions, execute double spends, and rewrite the blockchain’s history. While it’s challenging to carry out on larger networks, smaller ones face higher risk.

Monero (XMR) Price Outlook

Following the attack claims, Monero’s price saw a sharp drop. XMR is currently trading at $251, down -6.11% on the day. From a technical standpoint, slipping below this level could increase selling pressure. However, if news flow stabilizes and network security is restored, a short-term rebound remains possible.

For investors, this incident once again highlights the critical importance of blockchain security. How Monero navigates this crisis will be decisive for both its price performance and the broader trust in privacy-focused crypto projects.

This content is not financial advice. The crypto market is highly volatile, and you should always do your own research before making investment decisions.

Currently, the United States government is undertaking an initiative to prevent the buying and selling of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) using cryptocurrency.

Federal agencies should have the capability of detecting transactions on cryptocurrency that are connected to the trade of child abuse content, as suggested by U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bill Cassidy.

Within this move towards the eradication of CSAM, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) were asked to reveal their existing technical capabilities.

The senators used a Chainalysis investigation from January 2024, which stated that illegal trading of CSAM was done more often using cryptocurrencies. When conducting the research.

Chainalysis reports that “mixers” and “privacy coins” like Monero (XMR) are used by vendors of child abuse goods to hide their assets and evade authorities.

There has been a meteoric rise in the use of instant exchangers that facilitate the conversion of CSAM to Monero in recent years. Source: Chainalysis.

In letters to Attorney General Merrick Garland and Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, U.S. senators expressed their desire to know the capabilities of the DOJ and DHS in identifying and prosecuting these offenses.

“The current anti-money laundering (AML) rules and law enforcement approaches struggle to detect and avoid these crimes.”

The letter had six questions in total, with three directed specifically at the separate conclusions of the federal agencies regarding the relationship between bitcoin and CSAM. The rest were about discovering what further tools were required for the investigation of buyers and sellers.

The senators expect to learn the answers to their questions by May 10.

The indictment of KuCoin and its two founders was prompted by the DOJ’s present technical capability to investigate cryptocurrency transactions.

“Conspiring to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business” and BSA violations were among the charges levied against KuCoin and its two founders by the DOJ on March 26.

“In failing to implement even basic Anti-Money Laundering policies, the defendants allowed KuCoin to operate in the shadows of the financial markets and be used as a haven for illicit money laundering.”

The U.S. Department of Justice claims that KuCoin handled over $4 billion in “suspicious and criminal funds” and over $5 billion in transactions.

Binance announced that it will delist several coins, including Monero (XMR), known as a privacy coin. After this devastating news, Monero coin, which had been on an upward trend for some time, experienced a serious decline.

The tensions between the US and Iran had worked in favor of the Monero (XMR) coin and the coin had increased in value. In other words, XMR was benefiting from the bad situations happening globally.

However, the unexpected delisting news caused the Monero coin to crash.

After the delisting news, the price of the popular coin Monero (XMR) fell from $166 to $138.

According to the chart, if Monero (XMR) cannot hold on to the support levels and close above them, the decline seems to continue for a while.

In addition, exchanges have been taking a negative stance against privacy-focused projects for years.

Additionally, the delisting news for this pioneering privacy project confirms that Binance is also against them.
