Layer-1 blockchain protocol Qubic made waves in the crypto community last week with its move on the Monero network. Founder Sergey Ivancheglo, backed by community support, has now turned the project’s focus toward the Dogecoin (DOGE) network.

Qubic Community Chooses Dogecoin

According to an announcement on Qubic’s official X account, discussions around Dogecoin are ongoing, and the preparation phase will take time. The post noted:

“Questions about the blockchain’s resilience continue to be raised, and we may have the answers to solve these issues.”

In a community poll, Dogecoin was chosen as the target over other major meme coins such as Kaspa and Zcash. This step demonstrates that Qubic’s community-driven decision-making mechanism is actively functioning.

Debate Over the Monero 51% Attack Continues

Last week, Qubic claimed to control over 51% of Monero’s network hash power. This move allegedly gave the protocol the ability to reorganize six blocks. Qubic clarified that its goal is not merely to attack, but to identify and expose vulnerabilities within the system.

Additionally, Qubic converts the mining rewards it earns into USDT and uses them for QUBIC token burns and distributions. However, some Monero community members argue that the 51% attack was not entirely successful, describing the outcome as affecting “a few lucky blocks.”

Qubic’s Proof-of-Work (PoW) Strategy

Founder Sergey Ivancheglo conducted a community poll asking, “Which PoW blockchain running on ASIC devices should a 51% attack target?” Dogecoin was clearly selected over Kaspa and Zcash. This decision highlights that Qubic’s future strategic moves are shaped through active community participation.

Qubic’s Monero move drew attention to blockchain security and vulnerability detection. Now, with Dogecoin as its next focus, the protocol’s strategic approach is once again in the spotlight. This development is an important step to watch for both the Qubic community and the broader crypto market.

The US Treasury Department and the Department of Justice launched a large-scale operation targeting illegal activities on the darknet. The operation, named SpecTor, involved cooperation from 10 countries. During the raids led by the U.S., authorities arrested 270 individuals.

Security forces seized 2 tons of drugs, over 180 firearms, and more than $200 million in cryptocurrency. The confiscated cryptocurrencies included Bitcoin (BTC), Monero (XMR), and USDT. Officials closely monitored USDT transfers, blocked crypto wallets, and tracked transaction chains through blockchain analysis.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), under the U.S. Treasury, sanctioned Iranian national Behrouz Parsarad, who was identified as the operator of the darknet market Nemesis Market. Parsarad’s wallet addresses were publicly disclosed, and virtual asset service providers blocked these addresses.

Fentanyl Payments Made Through Crypto

Chainalysis reported in its March 2025 report that Chinese fentanyl precursor suppliers received $5.5 million USDT from U.S. cartel couriers. These transactions were conducted on-chain via stablecoins. Chainalysis called this the “on-chain fentanyl economy.” Authorities revealed that between 2018 and 2023, transfers to China totaled $37.8 million. Most transactions were detected via centralized exchanges and non-custodial wallets, with blockchain analytics tools uncovering these activities.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security also confirmed that crypto payments reached Chinese suppliers. Most payments were small and frequent. The Treasury’s tracking of crypto transfers dealt a financial blow to drug trafficking. Blockchain transactions provided critical data to law enforcement, allowing them to map addresses used in transfers.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland stated:

“Hiding on the darknet is no longer enough. Crypto transfers are being tracked. Criminal proceeds are being identified.”

The US Treasury Department of Justice emphasized this operation sends a clear message to criminals. Meanwhile, the Treasury listed crime-linked wallets and imposed new sanctions. OFAC requested crypto platforms to block addresses on the list. Blockchain analytics firms documented illegal transactions with crypto monitoring tools. Attempts to hide transaction traffic failed due to blockchain transparency, leading to this resolution.

Crypto phishing scammers are reportedly impersonating Coinbase support and leveraging leaked data to target high-ranking crypto executives and software engineers. These scammers claim to earn five-figure weekly profits, with one scammer stating, “We make at least five figures a week. Two days ago, we made $35,000. There’s a reason we do this — because there’s money here.”

Nick Neuman, CEO of Casa, recently had a conversation with a scammer and shared insights on November 20 via X (formerly Twitter). The scammer described a process involving phishing notifications that falsely claim a password change request has been canceled, prompting the victim to click on a malicious link.

The scammer revealed that their targets are primarily CEOs, CFOs, and software engineers, adding, “We don’t call poor people. Our data shows a minimum of $50,000 in holdings.” They also admitted that many targets’ information is sourced from databases belonging to companies like Unchained Capital.

Phishing Tactics and Techniques

The ultimate goal is not to steal passwords but to convince victims to transfer funds into wallets controlled by the scammers. To launder stolen crypto, they use tools like Tornado Cash and convert funds into privacy-focused cryptocurrencies like Monero (XMR).

The scammer also pointed out that accessing company databases is “too easy,” comparing the crypto space to the “Wild West.” For cashing out, they avoid KYC-compliant exchanges and prefer tools like hardware wallets (e.g., Ledger).

Rising Crypto Phishing Attacks

According to Web3 security firm Scam Sniffer, crypto phishing scams resulted in over $127 million in stolen funds during Q3 2024.

Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation is pursuing Monero transactions in connection with the Vastaamo hack and related ransom demand allegedly carried out by Julius Aleksanteri Kivimäki. Kivimäki is accused of hacking into the database of a mental health firm and demanding a ransom in cryptocurrency.

You might like: Sui ‘s New Partnership Excitement

Prosecutors have found new evidence of cryptocurrency traces to Kivimäki’s bank account. In October 2022, Kivimäki demanded 40 Bitcoins worth 450,000 euros in exchange for Vastaamo not publishing the records of more than 33,000 patients. If the demanded ransom was not paid, individual patients were allegedly targeted.

Finnish police obtained data proving that Kivimäki sent the Bitcoin payments he received to an exchange that did not follow KYC guidelines, exchanged them for Monero and transferred them to a private Monero wallet. These funds then appear to have been moved to other Bitcoin wallets through Binance.

Monero is known for its strong privacy features and claims to be untraceable. Technologies such as Ring Confidential Transactions (RingCT) and ring signatures anonymize users’ transactions. Monero creates a unique address for each transaction, making it difficult to trace transactions.

This incident also raises questions about the use of anonymous cryptocurrencies. For example, Eric Woerth, chairman of the Finance Committee of the French National Assembly, has proposed banning cryptocurrencies that anonymize users. The US Internal Revenue Service has also offered a $625,000 reward for cracking privacy coins in 2020. Previous research shows that blockchain analytics techniques can track transactions with privacy coins.

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has announced that it has added 10 new altcoins to its watchlist, including major projects such as Monero (XMR) and Zcash (ZEC).

In its watchlist published on January 4, 2024, Binance announced that it has added Aragon (ANT), Firo (FIRO), Keep3rV1 (KP3R), Mdex (MDX), MobileCoin (MOB), Reef (REEF), Vai (VAI), Monero (XMR), Zcash (ZEC), and Horizen (ZEN). With the addition of these 10 new altcoins, the number of assets on the watchlist has increased from 23 to 33.

The cryptocurrency exchange also announced that it has removed GMX (GMX) and SushiSwap (SUSHI) from the watchlist.

What is the Binance Watchlist? What risks await assets on this list?

Altcoins included in Binance’s watchlist are more volatile and carry more risk than other altcoins. These altcoins are reviewed and monitored regularly by Binance. It is stated that the altcoins on the watchlist no longer meet the listing requirements on the exchange and that these assets are at risk of being delisted.

Users who trade with assets on the list are required to pass the tests directed to them every 90 days and accept the conditions. The tests are conducted to determine whether users are aware of the risks before trading with assets on the watchlist.

Here are some of the risks that await altcoins on Binance’s watchlist:

Higher volatility: Altcoins on the watchlist are more likely to experience sharp price swings than other altcoins. This can lead to significant losses for investors.

Less liquidity: Altcoins on the watchlist are less liquid than other altcoins. This means that it may be more difficult to buy or sell them at a fair price.

Risk of delisting: Binance may delist altcoins from the watchlist if they no longer meet the exchange’s listing requirements. This would make it impossible to trade these assets on Binance.

Investors should carefully consider the risks before trading altcoins on Binance’s watchlist.

The exchange said it took the decision to protect a healthy trading environment and respond to user feedback. It also suspended deposits of privacy tokens from December 27 and will halt withdrawals after March 5, 2024.

OKX is a leading crypto exchange with daily crypto trading volumes of over $3 billion globally. The decision reflects a trend of exchanges delisting privacy-focused altcoins. OKX stressed that it will continue to manage the listing process by implementing similar mechanisms in the future.

This move shines a light on the discussions around regulatory compliance and the future of privacy-focused altcoins in the crypto world.

Monero (XMR) team announced that the Community Crowdfunding System (CCS) Wallet was attacked on September 1, 2023. The attacker managed to steal the entire balance of 2,675.73 XMR, which is approximately $384,000. The source of the security vulnerability has still not been identified, and cybersecurity firm SlowMist stated that this vulnerability did not originate from Monero’s privacy model. The attack was announced only recently even though it took place at that time.

The attacker executed nine different transactions successful in zeroing the balance of the Monero CCS Wallet.

Moonstone Research undertook the task of exploring how the attacker moved these funds. The security company’s analysis revealed some interesting results. Additionally they were able to track three of the attacker’s transfers with certainty. Also 2 months after the attack, XMR developer Luigi, one of the two people who had access to the wallet seed phrase, declared on GitHub that the wallet had been completely emptied. According to Luigi, he noticed this situation a month after the theft.

The other person with access was former Monero (XMR) developer, known as “fluffypony”, Ricardo Spagni. He surrendered to US authorities for extradition to South Africa in July 2023 and was accused here of invoice fraud against a biscuit company.
