MetaMask, one of the world’s most widely used self-custodial wallets, has introduced its native stablecoin, MetaMask USD ($MUSD). This marks the first time a self-custodial wallet has launched its own stablecoin. MetaMask USD is issued by Bridge (a Stripe company) and operates on a decentralized stablecoin infrastructure powered by the M0 protocol.

MetaMask USD: Wallet-Native and Built for Web3

$MUSD is deeply integrated into the MetaMask wallet, allowing users to experience a seamless dollar-denominated stablecoin system. Users can hold, spend, and transfer $MUSD across web3 applications. Designed for cross-chain usage via the M0 liquidity network, MetaMask USD provides extensive utility for DeFi platforms, dapps, and payment solutions.

At launch, $MUSD will be available on Ethereum and Linea (an EVM-equivalent L2 supported by Consensys), playing a foundational role in the Linea DeFi ecosystem. Over time, it will integrate with lending platforms, DEXs, and custodial services, unlocking deeper liquidity and broader usage for users.

Secure and Transparent Infrastructure with Bridge and M0

$MUSD leverages Bridge’s compliant stablecoin issuance platform and M0’s decentralized infrastructure. This ensures the token is backed 1:1 by high-quality, highly liquid dollar-equivalent assets and maintains transparency and cross-chain compatibility.

Bridge CEO Zach Abrams stated, “Issuing a custom stablecoin used to take over a year of complex integrations. Now this timeline has been reduced to weeks, allowing platforms like MetaMask to realize benefits quickly and efficiently.”

M0 CEO Luca Prosperi added, “We developed this solution to empower builders to control their digital dollar stack and deliver the best user experience possible.”

Regulatory Clarity and Future Plans

MetaMask USD is launched in alignment with the U.S. GENIUS Act, which introduces the first federal framework for regulating stablecoins. The initial release will be on Ethereum and Linea, with technical details and user guides set to be shared in the coming weeks.

Governor Arnold Palacios of the U.S. Pacific territory Northern Mariana Islands has vetoed a bill that would have allowed the island of Tinian to launch a fully backed USD-pegged stablecoin (MUSD).

In a letter dated April 11, Palacios said the bill “presents several legal issues and may be unconstitutional.” While the bill primarily aimed to regulate internet casino licensing, it also included a clause granting the Tinian Municipal Treasury authority to issue and manage the MUSD.

Stablecoin Hidden Within Internet Casino Bill

The legislation, introduced by Republican Senator Jude Hofschneider in February, sought to amend local law to allow internet-only casinos on Tinian. It included a clause enabling the municipality to issue, manage, and redeem the “Tinian Stable Token.”

The four-member Tinian delegation passed the bill unanimously on March 12. However, Palacios objected to its overreach, saying it lacked strong measures to combat illegal gambling activities and overstepped local jurisdiction.

Tinian Loses Race to Be First U.S. Stablecoin Issuer

Had it passed, the bill could have made Tinian the first U.S. government entity to issue a stablecoin, beating Wyoming, which plans to launch its state-backed coin in July.

The MUSD was to be fully backed by cash and U.S. Treasury bills and administered by the Tinian treasury. Marianas Rai Corporation, based in Saipan, was selected to provide the stablecoin’s technical infrastructure. The token was planned for release on the eCash blockchain, a fork of Bitcoin Cash ABC.

The stablecoin launch was intended to coincide with Google’s $1 billion subsea cable project running through Tinian, enhancing the island’s digital connectivity.
