Following the earthquake, Myanmar and Thailand were rocked by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake, killing 2,719 people in Myanmar and 18 in Thailand. Zhao’s donation highlights the fact that crypto donations are a significant source of aid to the region as the banking system is damaged. Donations are expected to reach $2.5 billion in 2025, driven by the rising value of digital assets and improved crypto regulations.

As the role of cryptocurrencies in emergency relief efforts grows, blockchain expert Anndy Lian highlighted the advantages of crypto donations in providing rapid and direct aid in emergency situations. “Crypto transactions can happen in minutes, and that provides vital speed,” Lian said. She also emphasized that cryptocurrencies offer the ability to reach aid directly through digital wallets in areas affected by infrastructure issues.

People like Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin are also known for their donations; in October, Buterin donated $180,000 worth of Ether to biotech charity Kanro. Crypto donations are likely to become more accepted in 2025, with more crypto wealth accruing and an improving political climate.
