Following the Pectra upgrade implemented on Ethereum’s mainnet, Ether’s price surged by 42% over the past five days, pushing its market cap beyond major global corporations.

As of May 12, according to data from the analytics platform 8marketcap, Ether surpassed Coca-Cola ($303.5 billion) and Alibaba ($303.7 billion) with a market capitalization exceeding $308 billion, ranking as the 39th-largest asset in the world. During this period, ETH price climbed to approximately $2,550.

The price rally was largely driven by the recently activated Pectra upgrade, which brought notable improvements in layer-2 scaling data storage, validator experience, and smart wallet usability.

Pectra Upgrade Finally Live on Mainnet

Initially scheduled for release in March 2025, the Pectra upgrade was postponed due to technical challenges during the testing phase.

The update was first launched on the Holesky testnet on February 24, but failed to finalize blocks. It was then moved to the Sepolia testnet on March 5, where an attacker mining empty blocks further escalated the issues.

To ensure secure deployment, Ethereum developers launched a new test network called “Hoodi”, and finally, on May 7, the upgrade was successfully rolled out to the mainnet.

With this update, externally owned accounts (EOAs) can now behave like smart contracts, enabling users to pay transaction fees not only with ETH but also with other tokens. Additionally, the staking limit for validators increased from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH, simplifying operations for larger participants. The number of data blobs per block was also increased, significantly improving layer-2 scalability.

On May 7, ETH was trading around $1,786, and just five days later, it reached $2,550, delivering a 42% return to investors.

Security Experts Warn of New Risks

However, the upgrade also introduced some security vulnerabilities. Experts have warned that new transaction types could allow malicious actors to control EOAs without an on-chain signature from the user.

Some auditors noted that these flaws might let attackers drain funds through off-chain signed messages.

Although Ethereum has made a significant leap in terms of price and market cap, the long-term impact and security concerns following the Pectra upgrade remain under close watch by the crypto community.

This movement formed three consecutive bullish candles.
Ethereum Targets $4,570

Ethereum broke out from a low of $1,386. By surpassing the $2,517 peak, it formed a rounding bottom pattern. This pattern signals a trend reversal. If the price holds above $2,500, an 81% surge is possible. The target is calculated at $4,570. Trading above the 200-day EMA supports the rally.

ETH Approaches Profitability

Coinglass data shows $786 million in short position liquidations at $2,586. A 3% rise could trigger a short squeeze. Conversely, $715 million in long positions are at risk at $2,438. Both scenarios could increase volatility.
Bearish Scenario and Support Levels

If Ethereum loses the 50% Fibonacci level at $2,430, the bullish thesis weakens. A drop below the 200-day EMA could test the 100-day EMA at $2,144. Bulls must defend these levels. Otherwise, bearish pressure increases.

The profitability of 67 million ETH could accelerate the rally. Technical analysis supports the $4,570 target. $3,000 forms a psychological stop point.
What is the Pectra Upgrade?

Pectra introduces innovations in Ethereum’s execution (Prague) and consensus (Electra) layers, featuring 11 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs). Notably, EIP-7702 enables account abstraction, allowing wallets to function like smart contracts, offering flexibility in gas fee payments and transaction batching. Additionally, EIP-7251 increases the maximum effective balance for validators from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH, enabling large validators to operate with fewer nodes. Pedro Gomes, founder of WalletConnect, stated that the upgrade targets both large-scale holders and end users utilizing smart wallets, batch transactions, and smart sessions.

Innovations of the Ethereum Pectra Upgrade

Pectra boosts blob data capacity, enhancing the efficiency of Layer 2 (L2) solutions. EIP-7691 raises the blob count per block from 3 to 6, with a maximum of 9. Furthermore, Verkle Trees and PeerDAS optimize data storage. Users can now pay gas fees with tokens like USDC instead of ETH, lowering barriers for new users.

Testing Process and Timeline

Despite challenges on the Holesky and Sepolia testnets, Pectra succeeded on the Hoodi testnet. The Ethereum Foundation aims to activate the upgrade on the mainnet today. Developers are updating clients. Users do not need to “upgrade” their ETH; they should remain vigilant against scams. Pectra makes Ethereum more scalable and user-friendly, though competition with rivals like Solana persists. In the long term, the Verkle transition and Fusaka will further strengthen the network. Technical analysis indicates a neutral signal in the short term, with selling pressure dominating on a weekly basis.

Ethereum has seen a 95% drop in average transaction fees one year after the Dencun upgrade. According to Etherscan data, the average cost of a token swap is now just $0.39, compared to approximately $86 one year ago.

The Dencun upgrade, launched on March 13, 2024, is considered one of the most significant improvements to Ethereum’s network. The upgrade combined the Cancun upgrade on the execution layer and the Deneb upgrade on the consensus layer, implementing a total of nine Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs). The primary goal was to enhance Ethereum’s scalability and reduce transaction costs for layer-2 networks.

According to YCharts data, the average gas fee on Ethereum has fallen from 72 gwei in 2024 to just 2.7 gwei as of March 12, 2025.
Significant Decline in ETH Price

Despite the major drop in gas fees, the price of Ethereum (ETH) has declined 53% over the past year.
Dominik Harz, co-founder of Build on Bitcoin (BOB), commented to Cointelegraph that Ethereum has “underperformed” recently. Harz noted, “Since Trump’s election, Monday’s price drop erased all DeFi TVL gains. Between Solana’s memecoin frenzy and Ethereum’s fractured few months, it’s clear the industry is searching for a new, more sustainable and secure frontier for DeFi.”

Pectra Upgrade Faces Issues During Testing

Ethereum’s next major upgrade, Pectra, was rolled out on its final testnet, Sepolia, on March 5. However, soon after deployment, the team encountered issues with error messages and empty blocks being mined. Ethereum developer Marius van der Wijden confirmed that a fix had been deployed, but an unknown user later triggered the same issue, causing further disruptions.

Harz stated that while these testnet issues may delay the mainnet launch, they are far from Ethereum’s biggest challenge. The Pectra upgrade is expected to double data space for layer-2s, lower costs, and increase execution capacity. However, Harz warned, “While that’s a step in the right direction, the reality is that Ethereum is quickly losing its position as the go-to chain for builders, and Pectra isn’t the fix-all solution to its deeper issues.”

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin emphasized in a blog post on January 23rd the need to expand layer 2 solutions, improve “blob” scaling, and strengthen ETH’s role as the ecosystem’s fundamental asset.

Strengthening Ether as the Ecosystem’s Core Value

Buterin noted the critical importance of positioning Ether as the primary asset of layer 1 and layer 2 Ethereum economies. He argued that layer 2 networks should support transaction fees with ETH and proposed increasing the number of “blobs” to provide more transaction capacity.

Layer-2 Solutions for Scaling

Layer 2 networks have significantly contributed to reducing transaction fees and increasing transaction capacity by operating on Ethereum’s main layer. However, Buterin stressed the need to accelerate the adoption of these solutions and increase interoperability between layer 2 networks.

He stated that Ethereum’s user experience should feel like a single unified ecosystem rather than multiple different blockchains. He also emphasized the need for ETH to continue gaining value in a layer 2-intensive world, highlighting the importance of standardized cross-chain messaging and faster deposit and withdrawal times.

Increasing Transaction Capacity with Blob Scaling

Buterin expressed that the Ethereum network should adopt a blob-focused scaling strategy. (Blobs are a tool that allows the network to process more transactions at lower costs without compromising decentralization or security)

Buterin indicated that forward-looking goals could reach levels like 128 blobs/second, potentially achieving a capacity of 100,000 transactions per second (TPS).

Leadership Change and Ethereum Foundation

Despite adopting an inclusive approach in Ethereum’s development process, Buterin noted that he remains the sole decision-maker in the Ethereum Foundation’s leadership. He stated that this situation would continue until an appropriate board is established with the planned innovations.
