Praetorian Group International (PGI) CEO Ramil Ventura Palafox lured investors by promising daily returns between 0.5% and 3%. In reality, the company recycled funds from new participants to pay earlier investors.

From December 2019 to October 2021, more than 90,000 investors deposited at least $201 million into PGI. This included $30.3 million in cash and 8,198 BTC worth $171.5 million at the time. At least $62.7 million in investor losses were recorded.

Court documents revealed that Palafox used investor money for personal luxuries instead of trading.

In the world of digital assets, few developments draw as much attention as governments stepping in to liquidate massive crypto holdings. The UK Home Office is now planning such a move, with a reported $7 billion Bitcoin stockpile under review for sale. This development could carry weighty implications for both public finances and regulatory direction.

61,000 BTC Seized in Ponzi Scheme Investigation

According to The Telegraph, the UK’s Home Office, in collaboration with law enforcement, is working toward selling a large crypto reserve seized from criminal activity. A major portion of the stockpile — 61,000 Bitcoin — was confiscated from a Chinese Ponzi scheme operating in the UK in 2018.

You Might Be Interested In: Sonic SVM Research: Can New Stablecoins Shake Up the Old Order?

A woman linked to the case was sentenced to over six years in prison in 2024 for laundering 150 BTC. Although victims are demanding the return of the funds, the Crown Prosecution Service has petitioned the High Court to retain the seized BTC and transfer the funds to the Treasury after liquidation.

Chancellor Eyes Crypto Sale Amid Budget Gaps

The move has reportedly gained the attention of Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves. Facing a substantial budget shortfall, Reeves said in April that she supports working with the United States to establish clearer regulatory frameworks for crypto assets.

“Robust rules around crypto will boost investor confidence, support the growth of Fintech, and protect people across the UK,” Reeves previously stated.

As part of the effort, a police-owned procurement company, BlueLight Commercial, issued a $53.7 million tender for a centralized system to securely store and sell seized crypto. However, no qualifying bids have been accepted so far.

Legal Delays May Stall Liquidation Timeline

The greatest challenge remains the legal clearance process. According to the tender documents, the average time from seizure to sale of digital assets is about one year — but for complex cases, it may stretch to three or four years. Therefore, despite forward steps, the actual sale could face significant delays.

Brazilian Federal Judge Vinicius Costa Vidor found Joel Ferreira de Souza, the alleged mastermind of the scheme, guilty of operating an unlicensed financial institution and laundering millions through shell companies and unregulated crypto wallets. According to local media sources, de Souza was accused of laundering millions of dollars.

How Long Are the Sentences?

De Souza received the highest sentence: 128 years in prison. Two other defendants, Gesana Rayane Silva and Victor Veronez, were sentenced to 27 and 15 years in prison, respectively, for managing cash and facilitating transactions in the scheme.

This ruling follows accusations by Brazil’s Federal Prosecutor’s Office (MPF) that five individuals orchestrated a pyramid scheme, raising R$1.11 billion (about $190 million) from approximately 20,000 investors.

Braiscompany promised high returns through crypto trading but allegedly ran a parallel financial system using informal transfers and high-commission operations.

The court also ordered the seizure of R$36 million (around $6.5 million). However, it remains unclear how much the victims will recover. Many of the affected victims’ lawyer, Artêmio Picanço, stated that they need to file civil claims soon before the funds are absorbed by the state.

Two defendants were acquitted due to lack of evidence. The court ruled that the remaining defendants “acted to disguise the illicit origin” of the money, running operations that mimicked legitimate investment practices but actually served to enrich insiders.

Recovering digital assets linked to an allegedly Ponzi scheme, the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission seized $18 million.

Oregon man Sam Ikkurty allegedly defrauded investors from a supposedly “crypto hedge fund.” According to a CFTC announcement, Allegedly Ikkurty pledged to return “net profits” to investors but neglected to do so, omitting even to inform them that the fund’s performance dropped 98.99% within months.

The agency said, “The order also found Ikkurty invested in unstable digital asset commodities opposite his promises to participants, and his purported crypto expertise was a sham because his actual experience with digital assets consisted only of losing his personal Bitcoins to a hack.”

Judge Mary Rowland of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois directed Ikkurty and several other entities to pay a total of $209 million, including almost $84 million in customer restitution, almost $37 million in unlawful gains disgorgement, and almost $110 million for a civil monetary penalty. Additionally compelled to pay a contempt charge over $14 million was Ikkurty.

“The defendants portrayed their programs as cutting-edge crypto and carbon investments when in reality they were plain, old-fashioned Ponzi schemes,” said CFTC Director of Enforcement Ian McGinley in a comment. “CFTC staff not only shut down the defendants’ fraudulent schemes and obtained a money judgment of over $200 million, they also recovered more than $18 million in stolen digital assets that might otherwise have been lost permanently.”

Arrested in Turkey in July on claims of planning a $4 billion Ponzi scheme, Andreas Szakacs, co-founder of the now-defunct cryptocurrency and FX platform OmegaPro, was By using OmegaPro’s “automated trading” algorithm, which promised great profits but finally locked customers out of their accounts, Swedish citizen Szakacs—who changed his identity to Emre Avci—is accused of scamming investors.

Later backed by Dutch citizen Dr. Abdul Mohaghegh, who claimed to have lost $103 million to the fraud, the arrest followed a June tip-off from an unidentified source. Originally created in 2019 and headquartered in Dubai, OmegaPro first attracted investor confidence with rapid profits on modest deposits but then closed user accounts and stopped withdrawals in November 2022, around at the same time as the FTX crash.

Before OmegaPro failed, authorities in many nations had previously warned about fraud against the company. Linked to the investigation, Turkish authorities have confiscated laptops, cell phones, and 32 crypto cold wallets. Authorities traced $160 million in transactions even though Szakacs hid access details.

Investigators believe that the activities of OmegaPro connected to the notorious OneCoin fraud, which allegedly misled investors of $4 billion. Exposed in 2015, the OneCoin fraud resulted in the prosecution of numerous prominent individuals; the U.S. Department of State recently raised the prize for information resulting in the arrest of OneCoin co-founder Ruja Ignatova to $5 million.

In a significant ruling for the cryptocurrency industry, a US judge has decided that two lesser-known altcoins, Olympus (OHM) and KlimaDAO (KLIMA), are commodities.

The decision comes as part of a larger Ponzi scheme case involving Oregon resident Sam Ikkurty and his companies. Ikkurty is accused of defrauding investors by promising high returns on investments in digital assets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, OHM, and KLIMA.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) had argued that OHM and KLIMA should be considered commodities because they are traded on futures exchanges and have similar characteristics to other commodities, such as gold and oil.

In her ruling, Judge Mary Rowland of the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois agreed with the CFTC’s arguments. She noted that both OHM and KLIMA are traded on decentralized exchanges (DEXs) that are similar to futures exchanges, and that they have similar price movements to other commodities.

The ruling is significant because it could have implications for the regulation of cryptocurrencies. If more cryptocurrencies are classified as commodities, they could be subject to stricter regulation by the CFTC.

The ruling is also likely to have an impact on the Ponzi scheme case against Ikkurty. The fact that OHM and KLIMA are now considered commodities could make it easier for the CFTC to prove that Ikkurty was engaged in fraud.

The virtual money is interpersonal. Thomas John Sfraga was found guilty of wire fraud after swindling more than a dozen people into fundraising projects that never started, in particular fake cryptocurrency plots. As written in the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) complaint, Sfraga induced the victim to invest some verifiable amount in the cryptocurrency wallet by promising him huge profits.

Promises of High Returns

On May 17, the DoJ statement shows that Schwarz of Sfraga and Zhazillo both have relevant backgrounds in podcasting and cryptocurrencies, with Schwarz serving as an event MC in New York, and have promised as high as 60% revenues within 3 months. In a prioritized order, the agency revealed that Sfraga was running a Ponzi scheme. Instead of gaining a legitimate profit, he paid people who recently joined his scheme with the funds newcomers pledged.

Misappropriation of Funds

Although in reality Sfargas changed the funds for personal expenses, the investigation revealed that he paid off the creditors (previous victims and business associates). Besides being friends and neighbors, Sfraga betrayed many victims throughout the process of getting rich by tricking them over $1.3 million.

The Broader Context of Crypto Fraud

Such gains are not extraordinary, though, with crypto often being the highest-rising sector. Bitcoin went as high as 65% from January 24 to April 24 this year, based on CoinMarketCap’s data. Bitcoin’s price was actually tagged at $66,825 during writing. Multiple altcoins, like Pepe (PEPE) and Dogwifhat (WIF), have yielded remarkable returns of 603% and 541%, respectively, during this timeframe.

Cryptocurrencies have experienced an upsurge in their value in recent months. However, this has not been a smooth ride, as they have also been linked with fraudulent activities.

US Department of Justice carried out $100 million operation. US Department of Justice recently carried out a significant $100 million operation targeting individuals involved in fraudulent cryptocurrency investment plans promising significant returns to investors. Pablo Renato Rodriguez, one of the founders of AirBit Club, also a global cryptocurrency fraud network, was sentenced to 12 years in prison, as announced by Damian Williams, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Rodriguez faces punishment on multiple charges alleging that he employed deceptive tactics to convince individuals to invest in AirBit Club, alongside Gutemberg Dos Santos. The company purported to engage in cryptocurrency mining and trading but, in reality, operated as a fraudulent scheme.

According to the US Department of Justice, Rodriguez and Dos Santos implemented a complex money laundering plan to hide the illegal profits obtained through AirBit Club. Additionally numerous accomplices, including Gutemberg Dos Santos, Scott Hughes, Cecilia Millan and Karina Chairez, have admitted their crimes and are currently waiting to serve their sentences.

As an important step, the court granted permission to seize assets belonging to the accomplices from the AirBit Club plan. These assets include various forms such as cash, Bitcoin and real estate, with an estimated total value of approximately $100 million.

AirBit Club: International Ponzi Scheme and Money Laundering Tactics

US Attorney Damian Williams announced that Pablo Renato Rodriguez served as the founder partner and leader of an international fraud operation that tricked inexperienced investors into a Ponzi scheme worth millions of dollars. This scheme falsely claimed to involve cryptocurrency trading and mining investments.

Rodriguez used complex methods to launder the illegal gains, including Bitcoin use, a lawyer’s escrow account, and various international front and fake companies. The purpose of these tactics was to deceive investors to divert their funds away from real investments.

In 2015, Rodriguez and Gutemberg Dos Santos founded AirBit Club together. The plan meticulously organized, targeting victims with the allure of guaranteed profits in exchange for cash investments, thus coercing them into AirBit Club membership.
