The world’s largest Bitcoin conference, Bitcoin 2024, begins today in Nashville, Tennessee.

Prominent figures such as U.S. Presidential candidate Michael Saylor, Edward Snowden, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Cathie Wood will be speaking at the event. However, the biggest buzz this year is around Donald Trump, who is making a surprise appearance as a speaker.

Donald Trump will be addressing attendees at a campaign event during the Bitcoin 2024 Conference in Nashville.

In the past, Trump has been highly critical of cryptocurrencies, even calling Bitcoin a scam. Recently, however, he has repositioned himself as a crypto-friendly presidential candidate. His campaign now accepts donations in popular cryptocurrencies like BTC, ETH, DOGE, and SOL.

Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, expected to be Trump’s running mate, is also a known cryptocurrency supporter. Vance holds between $100,000 and $250,000 worth of BTC on the Coinbase exchange.

With just hours to go before the conference starts, Trump’s upcoming speech is highly anticipated. Trump recently met with Bitcoin miners, pledging to boost Bitcoin production in the U.S. Moe Vela, a former advisor to Joe Biden, suggests that Trump’s newfound support for cryptocurrency is a strategic move to gain votes.

Independent U.S. Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will also speak at the event, sharing his ideas on how blockchain technology can be utilized in public services. Kennedy advocates for the entire U.S. budget to be managed on the blockchain to enhance transparency and accountability.

Former Republican Presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy will address the conference, alongside notable figures like Cathie Wood from ARK Investment, Michael Saylor from MicroStrategy, and Edward Snowden, a prominent voice in the cryptocurrency community.

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, expected to be Trump’s opponent in the 2024 election, declined to speak at the event.

In her absence, the cryptocurrency community believes Trump’s remarks will be even more significant. Rumors suggest Trump may propose the establishment of a U.S. Bitcoin strategic reserve, which could drive BTC prices to new all-time highs.

After Donald Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. both spoke at the party convention over Memorial Day weekend, the Libertarian Party in the United States selected another contender for president.

Ahead of the November 2024 elections, delegates from the Libertarian Party chose Chase Oliver as U.S. president, therefore providing a face to the third-largest political party in the nation. With the vast majority of Americans ready to support either President Joe Biden or Donald Trump, the presumed choices for their respective Democratic and Republican parties, the 38-year-old enters the presidential contest.

Oliver’s nomination took place following Trump’s May 25 presentation to the Libertarian Party convention. Reports claimed many had yelled that he was a “liar” and “panderer” for trying to live up to the party’s ideals. Although RFK Jr. also spoke at the convention on May 24, his candidacy was not taken into consideration after just 2% of the vote.

Related: Trump Promises Silk Road Founder Ulbricht Pardon If Re-Elected

Many Libertarian Party members have backed the features of cryptocurrencies, notably Bitcoin. The party’s platform says people “engaged in voluntary exchange should be free to use as money any mutually agreeable commodity or item.”

Oliver has regularly aired his beliefs on economics and personal choice in public; however, at the time of publishing, Cointelegraph could not locate his thoughts on digital assets. The Libertarian nominee favors the release of Ross Ulbricht, founder of Silk Road, who is presently serving two life sentences for his involvement in starting and administering the online market.

“Trump said he would put a Libertarian in his cabinet, protect crypto, prevent [a central bank digital currency], and commute Ross’s sentence,” Republican Corbin Sabol said in a May 26 X post. “Yet that’s not good enough for Libertarians […] They nominated Chase Oliver and probably won’t even get 3% this time.”

Oliver also sought help to name Mike ter Maat as his running companion. Portland native 63-year-old program included opposition to the Federal Reserve printing a central bank digital currency (CBDC) and for unrestricted use of cryptocurrencies. He backed jail time for Sam Bankman-Fried, a former FTX CEO who misled clients.

Though third-largest in the United States, the Libertarian Party garnered only around 3% of the popular vote in the 2016 presidential contest and is unlikely to win in 2024. But since several U.S. states have an Electoral College “winner-take-all” system, any third-party presidential candidate might affect an election by subtracting votes from either President Biden or Trump.

With less than six months until November 5, U.S. Election Day, Trump has been more candid on crypto. He declared in May that he would accept campaign contributions utilizing digital assets and asserted that he was “very positive and open-minded” about technology. Before November, President Biden will probably have three laws with a crypto focus passing his desk that might sway some voters.

According to Stand with Crypto’s latest data, Republican US Senators Cynthia Lummis and Ted Cruz are the two most crypto-friendly senators. Cynthia Lummis alone offers eight crypto-related bills and 184 public statements. Ted Cruz boasts eight bills and 24 statements.

Following Lummis and Cruz are Republican friends Ted Cruz and Bill Hagerty, with five bills and 92 statements. Of the 18 senators who have a positive outlook on crypto, 14 are Republicans and the remaining four are Democrats.

In general, the number of US senators is 100, with two per state. A net of 30 senators are opposed to cryptocurrencies.

We can’t just ignore the fact that Donald Trump and independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are turning to support crypto.

Kennedy recently added to his election campaign that he would introduce a bill for Bitcoin if elected. Trump, on the other hand, announced that he would not allow the creation of CBDCs.

The current US President, Joe Biden, is seen as being anti-crypto due to his approach to digital assets.

Crypto Asset Opponents (US Senators)

According to Stand With Crypto data, the most notable of the senators who oppose crypto is Elizabeth Warren, who is currently supporting or introducing a total of three anti-crypto bills and has also issued a total of 76 statements against crypto.

A new @USGAO report confirms that rogue nations are using crypto to dodge sanctions and undermine our national security.

— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) January 21, 2024

In July 2023, Elizabeth Warren reintroduced the Digital Asset Anti-Money Laundering Act, which would renew the following:

Take strict measures against non-custodial digital wallets

Expand Bank Secrecy Act responsibilities

Anti-Money Laundering

Create compliance review

Fight against illegal use

The bill is supported by a large number of lawmakers from both sides of the aisle. The law has been criticized by advocacy groups who argue that it will fail to address the illegal use of digital assets.

Warren made a “war on crypto” a major part of her re-election campaign in 2023. Since then, she has made a number of public statements claiming that cryptocurrency has helped to finance terrorism in the Middle East to a significant extent and is generally used for illegal activities, even though there is growing evidence to the contrary.
