One of the most controversial figures in the crypto world, Sam Bankman-Fried, may be released earlier than expected, despite receiving a 25-year prison sentence. According to U.S. prison records, his projected release date is December 14, 2044, which points to a reduction of more than four years from the original sentence.

Trial Over a Billion-Dollar Fraud Scheme

Bankman-Fried, the founder and former CEO of the now-defunct crypto exchange FTX, made headlines in 2022. A jury found him guilty of seven counts, including fraud and conspiracy. Prosecutors revealed that he misused customer funds through his hedge fund, Alameda Research, committing what they described as an $11 billion fraud.

From Brooklyn to California: His Prison Journey

Sentenced in 2024, Bankman-Fried was initially held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, a facility known for its harsh conditions. There, he reportedly shared a dormitory with rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs. A media interview he gave during this time drew heavy attention and led to the resignation of his crisis manager.

He was later moved to a low-security prison—FCI Terminal Island in California—where he is currently serving his sentence with around 850 other inmates.

Is Early Release Possible?

The Federal Bureau of Prisons allows inmates to reduce their sentences through Good Conduct Time, offering up to 54 days off per year served. Participation in approved rehabilitation programs can also lead to further reductions. These mechanisms could potentially advance Bankman-Fried’s release date.

Additionally, the two months he spent behind bars before sentencing has been counted toward his overall sentence, which may help bring the total time served closer to 21 years instead of the full 25.

Others Involved Also Saw Sentence Reductions

Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda Research and Bankman-Fried’s ex-girlfriend, was sentenced to two years in prison for her role in the fraud. She reportedly received a six-month reduction through similar sentence adjustment processes, and is now expected to be released in May 2026.
