The crypto world is facing a new and insidious type of scam. Cyber attackers are targeting victims with fake job listings, infecting their devices with malware, and potentially stealing their crypto assets. Here’s what you need to know about this dangerous method:

The New Scam Technique: Microphone and Camera Access Issue

Scammers have developed a more subtle approach, replacing malicious PDF files or fake video conference software with a new method. This time, they convince victims that they need to resolve a microphone and camera access issue.

When the victim follows the instructions, malware is installed on their device, giving attackers full access. The malware creates a backdoor, allowing the attackers to empty the victim’s crypto wallet.

How the Scam Works

Scammers reach out to victims through professional networks like LinkedIn, Discord, Telegram, and freelance platforms. They post fake job listings using the names of well-known crypto firms such as Gemini or Kraken.

During the interview, victims are asked detailed questions about the future of the crypto industry or business development with limited budgets, with the goal of building trust.

At the end of the interview, the victim is asked to record a video on the “Willo | Video Interviewing” platform. At this point, the victim believes they are facing a microphone and camera access issue.

To resolve the issue, they are instructed to change browser settings or restart their browser. These actions ultimately result in malware being installed.

This method targets Mac, Windows, and Linux operating systems. Anyone responding to recruitment requests on professional networks could be a potential victim.

How to Protect Yourself

Be cautious of unexpected job offers and think twice before clicking on links.

Verify any applications or websites that request microphone and camera access.

If you’ve been exposed to malware, immediately reset your device.

This new method of crypto scams can lead to significant financial losses if you’re not careful. To protect yourself and your assets, always stay cautious and question requests from unknown sources. Never blindly trust instructions sent to you to resolve any technical issues.

Ethereum’s layer-2 solution, Base, continues to demonstrate impressive growth in both transaction speed and total value locked (TVL). The network has set a new record with 106.26 transactions per second (TPS), while its TVL has recently surpassed $10 billion.

This achievement highlights how far Base has come since January when it averaged only 4 TPS. Base’s founder, Jesse Pollak, emphasized that TPS has increased by 28% since November 23.

According to L2BEAT data, Base now holds $10.68 billion in TVL, ranking second among Ethereum layer-2 solutions. It trails only Arbitrum One, which has $18.3 billion in TVL. Base secured this position in June after overtaking OP Mainnet.

The total TVL across Ethereum layer-2 networks currently stands at $49.3 billion.

Base has also reached a significant milestone in transaction volume. The network surpassed 1 billion transactions, driven largely by the memecoin frenzy during this bull cycle. However, the surge in memecoin activity has also attracted scammers. Between January and March, losses from phishing attacks on the network increased 18-fold.

While addressing these challenges, Base is making strides toward decentralization. In October, the implementation of fault proofs marked an important step in making the network more decentralized.

Base’s rise is seen as a challenge to fast blockchain solutions like Solana. StarkWare CEO Eli Ben Sasson noted that solutions like Base will increase competition, predicting significant TPS improvements in the coming months.

Users Can’t Send or Receive Money in Phantom Wallet

A lot of people who use Phantom, a digital wallet for Solana cryptocurrency, are having trouble. They can’t send money to others or get money from them. Some think the wallet might not be working right now because the transactions aren’t showing up on the blockchain, which is like the internet’s ledger for cryptocurrency.

Why Is Phantom Having Issues?

The main reason Phantom might be having problems is because of a lot of people using the Solana network at the same time. Recently, a lot of people got excited about meme coins (joke cryptocurrencies) like BOME, especially after it got added to Binance, a big cryptocurrency exchange. This made the network very busy. People are rushing to buy these new meme coins, hoping they will go up in value, but it’s hard to say if this will keep happening.

Watch Out for Scams

Alongside the operational issues faced by the Phantom wallet, there is a growing concern about fraud within the cryptocurrency community. Several influencers have been promoting the exchange of Solana (SOL) for meme coin airdrops, a practice that has already led to significant financial losses. A recent scam involved a fraudulent wallet stealing $2.6 million worth of Solana tokens from users, highlighting the risks associated with the current frenzy in the meme coin market.

The hacker’s wallet containing $100,000 worth of USDT has been blacklisted and frozen! The victim had about $170,000 worth of NFTs and other assets drained. 90 ETH is worth approximately $166,000.

With the involvement of police and cyber authorities, this person, whose 90 ETH worth of assets were stolen, reached the hacker’s tether address! This address was quickly blacklisted by the authorities so that they could recover most of the funds.

The victim, who tweets on X (Twitter) under the username @l3yum, first had his wallet emptied by the hacker on March 16. The hacker stole cryptocurrencies and NFTs from small projects, which were immediately traded or sold.

Congrats! How did you get the police to actually care enough to help?

— Jalazo.eth (@nft4dummies) August 11, 2023

On August 11, @l3yum tweeted that his Ethereum-based USDT address had been blacklisted. ‘I’m grateful that the police officer helped me even though he didn’t know anything about cryptocurrency,’ he said.

We mentioned that 90 ETH was worth $166,000. The blacklisted wallet had USDT worth $107,306. Therefore, it was thought that not all of the stolen funds could be recovered. Although it is not entirely clear whether the victim will be able to recover the full amount, previously, the USDT of blacklisted wallets was burned and the equivalent amount of the asset was returned to the owner. L3yum confirmed that this is a possible route.

You can follow us on Google News to be instantly informed about our content!

The blacklisting of a USDT wallet address by Tether follows a court order.

It is not yet known how the hacker gained access to the wallet key in March. Various guesses suggest that the victim either changed the SIM card in his phone or backed up the wallet address in iCloud. The last reason is that perhaps the victim was using his wallet on several devices!
