Abracadabra Money has now been attacked for the third time in the past two years. In 2024 and 2025, it lost $6.49 million and $13 million, respectively.
According to CoinMarketCap, Magic Internet Money (MIM) saw a 16.98% drop in trading volume. The 60-day price decline reached 40.26%, while the 90-day increase recorded 19.83%. This underscores the sensitivity of investor confidence.

As the demand for self-custody solutions continues to grow across the crypto space, Safe has introduced a major new initiative. The company has established Safe Labs, a newly formed subsidiary dedicated to building enterprise-level wallet infrastructure. This move is aimed at enabling large institutions to manage on-chain assets securely and with maximum flexibility.

Modular Security with Smart Accounts

Safe Labs is developing its products using Safe’s modular Smart Account architecture — a smart contract-based wallet system that prioritizes security, adaptability, and user control. The ultimate goal is to offer a seamless and secure digital asset management experience for enterprise users.

According to Safe co-founder Lukas Schor, the success of Web3 hinges on empowering users with complete control over their digital assets. Safe Labs is a step forward in building infrastructure that supports this digital sovereignty, with a focus on institutional-grade quality.

A Proven Leader at the Helm

Safe Labs is led by Rahul Rumalla, a seasoned expert with over 15 years of experience in product and engineering leadership. Rumalla previously served as Safe’s Chief Product Officer and has also founded Web3 ventures like Paperchain and Otterspace. His background includes a role as Director of Engineering at SoundCloud.

Rumalla emphasized that Safe Labs is targeting “any organization managing or exposing users to on-chain value.” In fact, many businesses are already using Safe’s infrastructure — some for years.

Currently, Safe secures $60 billion in digital assets, facilitates around 4% of all Ethereum transactions, and supports approximately 10% of all EVM-based smart accounts.

Why Self-Custody Matters for Institutions

Self-custody means individuals or entities retain full control over their private keys without relying on third-party custodians. For institutions, this is particularly critical for minimizing risk and enhancing control over funds.

Many opt for multisignature setups, where multiple keys are needed to authorize transactions. However, this introduces another layer of complexity and potential risk: blind signing.

The Ongoing Challenge of Blind Signing

Blind signing occurs when users approve a transaction on a hardware wallet without seeing full transaction details on the device itself. This typically happens because the wallet doesn’t natively support the custom data or smart contract logic involved.

Such situations have led to major vulnerabilities. A key example is the $1.4 billion Bybit hack in early 2024, where blind signing — combined with a compromised developer device — played a major role in the breach.

Despite advances, Safe’s current smart account system still requires blind signing for certain interactions. Experts argue that solving this challenge will require tighter integration between smart contract wallet developers like Safe and hardware wallet manufacturers such as Ledger and Trezor.

Ledger CEO Pascal Gauthier has openly criticized blind signing practices, comparing them to “signing blank checks online” — a sentiment echoed throughout the industry.

In the fast-paced world of crypto, innovation often walks hand-in-hand with new risks. Ethereum’s latest upgrade, Pectra, is a double-edged sword — bringing advanced smart wallet features while exposing users to an unprecedented attack vector.

One message. That’s all it takes for hackers to drain your entire wallet. A signed offchain message is now powerful enough to hand over control of your funds — no onchain transaction required.

EIP-7702: The Risky New Delegation Mechanism

Activated on May 7, 2025, Pectra’s centerpiece EIP-7702 introduces a transaction type called SetCode, which allows users to delegate control of their wallets via a simple signature.

Arda Usman, a Solidity smart contract auditor, confirmed: “An attacker can use this offchain signature to install malicious code into an externally owned account (EOA) and move ETH or tokens — without the user ever signing a transaction.”

This feature effectively transforms user wallets into smart contracts, opening the door to silent yet devastating attacks.

A Stealth Threat Via Innocent-Looking Messages

Yehor Rudytsia, an onchain researcher at Hacken, emphasized that this transaction type allows arbitrary code to be installed in wallets. Previously, such a change required an actual transaction; now, only a signature is enough.

You Might Be Interested In: Elon Musk Talks About the Name of a New Memecoin!

This shift means phishing attempts, fake DApps, or Discord scams can now result in complete wallet takeovers. “We believe this will become the most common attack vector following the Pectra upgrade,” Rudytsia warned.

Wallet applications that fail to correctly interpret transaction type 0x04 are especially vulnerable.

Hardware Wallets Are Not Immune Anymore

The once-clear distinction between hot and cold wallets is fading. Rudytsia highlighted that hardware wallets are now just as vulnerable if users unknowingly sign malicious messages: “Once signed, all funds can be gone in a moment.”

To stay safe, users should:

Never sign messages they do not fully understand.

Look out for delegation requests, especially those involving nonce values.

Be aware that some delegation signatures can be replayed on any Ethereum-compatible chain.

While multisig wallets offer more robust protection, single-key wallets — including hardware ones — must adopt new safeguards to prevent exploitation.

The blockchain intelligence firm Arkham has found an alarming tendency in the crypto world that many of the identified crypto addresses hold millions of dollars either stuck or forgotten in bridge contracts. In an April 22 post, Arkham revealed that many accounts, including those of high-profile figures such as Ethereum co-creator Vitalik Buterin and big entities like Coinbase, are stuck in this situation.

Crypto Whales and Notable Figures Among Those Affected

According to Arkham, these accounts are holding six to seven figure ranges of cryptocurrency altogether, which is locked in bridge contract. The company pointed out several examples, one of which was a wallet that belonged to Vitalik Buterin who received 50 Ether (ETH) and since seven months the $1.05 million has been stuck in the Optimism bridge. This is however a fraction of Buterin’s vast portfolio, highlighting the issue.

Surprisingly, one more wallet associated with the Bofur Capital, possibly associated with a Celsius creditor, holds $1.8 million of wrapped-Bitcoin (WBTC) stuck in the Arbitrum bridge for 27 months. In the same vein, Thomasg.eth, the pseudonymous creator of decentralized air transportation solution Arrow, has $800,000 in Ether locked in the Arbitrum bridge.

Bridges are a problem to even big players like Coinbase. Arkham revealed that Coinbase did try to bridge $75k in USDC to Ethereum through the Optimism bridge six months ago, but the funds are still waiting to be claimed on Ethereum’s base layer.

Although these situations do trigger alarms, it is possible that the wallet owners keep control of the funds and having decided to park them for a while. However, the disclosures exposed the weaknesses of cross-chain bridges that serve as crucial elements in the modular blockchain networks exemplified by Ethereum.

Bridge Vulnerabilities Highlighted Amidst Security Concerns

Bridges are designed to transfer the transaction responsibilities to layer 2 solutions while holding data availability and security at the base layer. Nevertheless, they are starting to attract hackers as a result of possible flaws in smart contracts or centralised validator sets.

The $650 million Ronin Bridge hack in March 2022 perpetrated by North Korea’s state-sponsored Lazarus Group is a good illustration. The group was able to gain the control of five out of nine private keys of the transaction validators, highlighting the importance of the strong security practices within the bridge infrastructure.

While the crypto community is wrestling with these issues, the findings of Arkham highlight the need for improved security procedures and caution in dealing with the changing world of decentralized finance.

The word “blockchain” is popping up more and more every day. Naturally, this raises the question in people’s minds ”What is this blockchain?‘ In this article, we have compiled the most frequently asked questions and their answers for you.

1- What does blockchain technology do?

In today’s world, where the importance of data and information security has significantly increased, blockchain eliminates the costs and risks associated with storing and altering data. Fast and secure access to data, the inability to alter data without adding a new record to the system for correction, and the use of unique identity numbers specific to the blockchain instead of personal information facilitate the tracking of all transaction details. As a decentralized system, it reduces costs and the possibility of hacking in tasks such as data storage. In summary, the benefits include data security and transparency, easy tracking of data, immutability of data, fast access to data, efficiency, automation, and fewer intermediaries.

2- How can blockchain change our lives in the future?

With the inclusion of official institutions in the process, the immutability of the system allows for the rapid completion of tasks that require physical identity declaration, such as passport and ID processes conducted in official institutions, to be done remotely. In sectors like food, tracking the entire process from source to end-user, along with the monitoring of all transactions and the emergence of costs and profit margins, enables more efficient processing of big data and the tracking of the entire supply chain. Blockchain provides transparent and unalterable data, creating possibilities for addressing issues such as inflation, effective agricultural production, cost accounting for companies, and consumers seeing real prices. Additionally, it helps prevent fraud and fraudulent transactions. For example, when buying a car, you can verify if there is any record of damage. With the Internet of Things (IoT), you can see all transactions made in all asset classes and act accordingly. In summary, blockchain opens the way to eliminating information asymmetry-related problems.

3- Is blockchain technology only used for cryptocurrencies?

No, it’s much broader than that. can address various issues such as fraud prevention, from the Internet of Things to data verification and data security. Governments can implement more effective structural policies based on accurate data, avoiding time and resource waste. Companies can manage all activities, from production and sales to services and logistics, more quickly and effectively, while individuals can observe correct pricing behavior in all asset classes in the market. In the simplest terms, you can see where all the ingredients in a restaurant meal were grown, when they were purchased, and their cost. Transparent access to data such as previous owners of a house, renovations made in the house, previous sale prices, and materials used is also possible.

In the financial sector, the functioning of banks and other financial institutions as intermediaries may change due to the lack of mutual trust. These institutions will become service providers with blockchain. Areas such as funding and project financing can be done through peer-to-peer (P2P) platforms. In the healthcare sector, tracking patients and medication, and in the energy sector, automatic billing at electric vehicle stations are examples of areas suitable for blockchain use.

You might like it:Web 3.0 & Blockchain World

4- Which companies in the world use blockchain infrastructure?

To illustrate the widespread use of this technology, let’s mention some global companies that use it.

5- What benefits do smart contracts provide via blockchain?

Smart contracts, which enable interaction between two or more stakeholders who do not trust each other and are not familiar with each other, can be defined as digital agreements/programs that must adhere to specific rules running on the blockchain. These rules are predetermined and copied by the entire network, and the contract does not come into effect if the conditions are not met. This allows commitments to be made through blockchain without the need for intermediaries and the establishment of trust.

As it is customizable, there is no limit to the subject area of the agreement. It can be used in various fields, from buying goods and services to financial funding, healthcare services, games, and mobile applications.

This technology already provides speed, trust, and cost reduction automatically. Therefore, factors such as the frequency of use in daily life, user demand, and the success of the project are crucial. Technically, an increase in the number of transactions is expected to correspond to an increase in the number of blocks. This way, it is possible to benefit from all the advantages provided by blockchain technology, including security.
