Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin accelerated his Ethereum (ETH) sales throughout February 2026, offloading more than 8,800 ETH during the month. At the same time, Ethereum inflows to Binance reached their highest level since November 2025. Declining staking demand has increased liquid ETH supply, putting short-term pressure on the price.

Vitalik Buterin ETH Selling Accelerated

Buterin’s sales began in early February. According to the disclosed plan, a total of 16,384 ETH will be strategically allocated toward long-term initiatives.

On X, Vitalik wrote:

“I have just withdrawn 16,384 ETH, which will be deployed toward these goals over the next few years. I am also exploring secure decentralized staking options that will allow even more capital from staking rewards to be put toward these goals in the long term.”

However, in February alone, amid already fragile market conditions, over 8,800 ETH worth approximately $18.45 million was sold.

According to blockchain analytics firm Lookonchain, Buterin sold 6,958 ETH, valued at $14.78 million, in early February. During this period, ETH dropped from $2,360 to $1,825, marking a 22.7% decline. In the past two days, he reportedly sold an additional 1,869 ETH, worth about $3.67 million. Lookonchain added: “During this period, ETH fell from $1,988 to $1,875, down 5.7%.”

Short-term price pressure was felt. Still, the broader market remains in a downtrend, and macro uncertainty along with low risk appetite continues to weigh on major assets.

After the recent sales, data from Arkham Intelligence shows Buterin still holds 224,105 ETH.

Short-term price pressure was felt. However, the broader market still remains in a downtrend. The effects of macro uncertainty and low risk appetite are clear… Historically, large ETH transfers have had significant impacts on price. For example, the 35,000 ETH transfer in May 2021 (worth approximately $125 million at the time) led to a roughly 50% decline in ETH price over a few weeks. Later, on November 11, 2021, the foundation transferred another 20,000 ETH ($95 million) to Kraken; in hindsight, this move coincided with a period when Ether’s price reached nearly $4,700 just before the next downturn.

Binance ETH Inflows Hit Multi-Month Highs

Buterin’s sales coincided with a sharp rise in Ethereum inflows to Binance. According to analysts, total inflows over the past 30 days reached around $33.3 billion, marking the highest level since November 2025.

Large exchange inflows are often linked to trading activity or potential selling pressure, as investors typically move assets to exchanges to execute trades. However, analysts note this should not be seen as inherently bearish.

“Sometimes elevated inflows reflect strategic repositioning by investors or readiness for higher trading activity during volatile periods. Moreover, strong inflows can precede price stability if the additional supply is absorbed by demand,” the analyst said.

The current inflow levels place the market in a sensitive phase. How ETH reacts to this shift will likely determine whether the inflows lead to continued selling pressure or a redistribution phase.

Sharp Decline in Staking Demand and Liquid Supply

BeInCrypto’s recent report highlighted a significant drop in Ethereum staking demand. Slower staking inflows may indicate a growing preference for liquidity during periods of uncertainty.

If net staking declines or reverses, it can increase circulating ETH supply, potentially adding to short-term selling pressure depending on market demand.

Together, rising exchange inflows and declining staking demand point to increased liquid supply and lower absorption, suggesting elevated short-term supply-side pressure.

Currently, ETH is trading around $1,880, down 5.35% over the past 24 hours, reflecting continued downward pressure.

As January 2026 begins, pressure on the Ethereum market is building beyond simple price movements. Large investors and institutional players have redirected more than $110 million worth of ETH to centralized exchanges, prompting the market to reprice short-term selling risk.

This activity goes beyond isolated transactions. On-chain data points to a broader phase of position adjustments among large wallets. At a time when short-term price sensitivity is rising, increased ETH inflows to exchanges are directly influencing market psychology.

Whales Move Closer to Exchanges

Blockchain analytics show a clear concentration in large Ethereum transactions. A wallet tracked under the label 0xB3E8, which began accumulating ETH nearly eight years ago, transferred approximately 13,083 ETH—worth about $43.35 million—to the Gemini exchange last week. The wallet still holds 34,616 ETH, suggesting the move may not represent a full exit.

A similar operational shift emerged from Ethereum treasury firm FG Nexus. The company sold roughly 2,500 ETH, valued at $8.04 million, while maintaining a sizable balance of 37,594 ETH. With its previous sale dating back to November 2025, the timing of this transaction stands out.

Venture capital activity also reflects repositioning. A wallet believed to be associated with Fenbushi Capital reportedly sent around 7,798 ETH, worth approximately $25 million, to Binance. Notably, these funds had been staked for nearly two years, implying that the transfer may reflect strategic reallocation rather than pure liquidity needs.

Where Does Selling Risk Begin?

Market participants often interpret exchange inflows as early indicators of potential selling pressure. Centralized exchanges remain the primary venues for liquidity access and execution. However, such transfers do not always translate directly into spot sales.

Funds are frequently moved for internal rebalancing, collateral management, hedging strategies, or over-the-counter operations. As a result, rising exchange deposits increase short-term risk but do not automatically signal an imminent liquidation. The critical factor is whether these inflows become persistent.

Is U.S. Demand Losing Momentum?

Market-based indicators reinforce the on-chain narrative. The Coinbase Premium Index, which tracks the price difference between ETH/USD on Coinbase Pro and ETH/USDT on Binance, has remained in negative territory. This suggests weakening demand from U.S.-based institutional participants.

Historically, this metric turns positive during periods of strong institutional accumulation. Its current position points to a more cautious stance among U.S. investors.

A Different Story in Staking

In contrast, Ethereum’s staking data paints a more balanced picture. Validator queue data shows approximately 2.7 million ETH waiting to enter staking, creating an estimated 47-day activation delay. This backlog highlights sustained long-term commitment to the network.

Meanwhile, the exit queue remains limited to around 36,960 ETH. The imbalance between entry and exit flows suggests that while some large holders reduce exposure, the broader validator base continues to prioritize staking yields.

What Does the Technical Picture Suggest?

From a technical standpoint, sentiment is not uniformly bearish. Some analysts argue that Ethereum may be entering a renewed accumulation phase. Under this view, current price behavior reflects consolidation rather than an imminent sell-off.

Market commentator Crypto Gerla suggests ETH could be rebuilding momentum, with the $3,600 level re-emerging as a medium-term target. This scenario, however, depends on whether whale-driven exchange activity slows and U.S. demand stabilizes.

At present, Ethereum is navigating a delicate balance between selling pressure and staking-driven support. The data points to strategic profit-taking or risk management on the institutional side, while robust staking demand raises the possibility that incoming exchange liquidity could be absorbed without triggering sharp downside moves. How this balance resolves may shape not only price direction but also broader risk perception in the days ahead.

Ethereum social media sentiment has dropped to levels previously seen before major price reversals. According to Santiment data, this shift in tone may signal that ETH is closer to stabilization than further decline. Timing, once again, appears critical.

Social Sentiment Drops as Ethereum Fades From Conversation

ETH has gradually slipped out of daily crypto discussions. Social platforms show fewer mentions, lower engagement, and a noticeable decline in speculative enthusiasm. Santiment analyst Brian Quinlivan notes that this type of silence rarely appears during strong downtrends.

Instead, it often surfaces when markets grow tired rather than fearful. Ethereum’s current sentiment suggests indifference more than panic. Historically, this distinction has mattered. Deep sell-offs tend to end with noise, not quiet.

Quinlivan argues that ETH’s downside momentum appears limited at current levels. The lack of aggressive bearish sentiment may be reducing the probability of another sharp leg lower.

Why ETH 2025 Setup Keeps Coming Up Again

In early 2025, Ethereum traded near yearly lows while investor confidence eroded. Social sentiment metrics reflected growing doubt about ETH’s relevance and future growth. That period ended quietly before price action changed direction.

Within months, ETH recovered nearly 70%, eventually revisiting its 2021 all-time highs. Santiment’s current sentiment curve resembles that same phase of disinterest rather than outright rejection.

The key difference now is perception. Ethereum is no longer being questioned as a network. It is largely accepted as the second-largest crypto asset, even if excitement has temporarily cooled.

Network Growth Tells a Different Story

While price and sentiment remain subdued, Ethereum’s network activity is moving in the opposite direction. On-chain growth metrics show rising participation, particularly around staking-related activity.

Why can Ethereum’s network grow while price stagnates?

Because long-term participants tend to focus on infrastructure and yield when short-term traders step aside.

This divergence between sentiment and fundamentals has historically preceded volatility. When engagement increases quietly, markets often react late.

Market Still Playing Defense Outside Bitcoin

Broader crypto sentiment remains cautious. Capital continues to concentrate around Bitcoin, while altcoins struggle to attract sustained inflows. The Altcoin Season Index reinforces this defensive positioning.

Ethereum sits in an uncomfortable middle ground. It is trusted but temporarily uninspiring. Past cycles suggest that such positioning rarely lasts indefinitely.

When sentiment becomes too quiet while fundamentals stay active, price reactions tend to surprise rather than confirm expectations.

For now, Ethereum remains in waiting mode—but history suggests that prolonged silence rarely stays unresolved.

You can also freely share your thoughts and comments about the topic in the comment section.
Ethereum ETFs saw an inflow of $218.64 million, marking the 18th consecutive day of positive net inflows. The largest contribution came from BlackRock’s ETHA ETF, which received $223.73 million in a single day. ETHA’s total assets under management rose to $11.39 billion.

Currently, total spot Ethereum ETFs have reached a net asset size of $21.61 billion. Daily trading volume stands at $1.58 billion.

On the same day, spot Bitcoin ETFs also experienced a net inflow of $79.97 million, closing positive for the fourth consecutive day. BlackRock’s IBIT ETF was again the standout product of the day. Continued institutional inflows support price stability on the Bitcoin side as well.

During the same period, notable activity was observed in the Bitcoin spot ETF options market. As of July 28, the daily net open interest (delta) exceeded $215 million. Total nominal open interest reached $24.67 billion, while the call/put ratio remained at 1.96. Meanwhile, on July 29, total trading volume was $927 million, with BlackRock’s IBIT options dominating nearly the entire volume at $918 million. These figures reveal that institutional interest in Bitcoin ETFs is not limited to the spot market.

Supply-Demand Risk Increasing for Ethereum

Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan highlighted the growing interest in staking and tokenization use cases. According to him, this demand is boosting interest in Ethereum ETFs. Hougan predicts that next year, $20 billion worth of ETH demand could arise through ETFs and institutions.

However, Ethereum’s annual issuance is limited to only 800,000 ETH. This means demand could exceed supply by approximately seven times. The potential supply squeeze may exert upward pressure on Ethereum prices.

Institutional investor interest in both Ethereum and Bitcoin ETFs has surged rapidly in recent days. This trend could signal the start of a new institutional cycle in crypto assets.
