U.S. President Donald Trump has begun to question his long-standing close relationship with Vladimir Putin. His recent harsh statements indicate that new sanctions against Russia may be on the agenda. However, as often seen in Trump’s foreign policy, uncertainty and inconsistency are once again at play.

Trump: “Putin Has Gone Crazy”

In his latest post on Truth Social, Trump used the following words for the Russian leader:

“Putin has gone absolutely CRAZY! I’ve always said he wanted all of Ukraine. If he goes through with it, it will be the downfall of Russia!”

These strong remarks suggest that Trump may be starting to abandon his admiration for Putin. Yet it remains unclear whether this shift will actually result in a real sanctions process.

Sanctions on the Table, But Indecision Continues

According to The Wall Street Journal, the Trump administration is considering new sanctions this week due to the intensifying attacks in Ukraine and the failure of peace negotiations. However, these sanctions are expected to be more diplomatic than economic. One proposed measure is to pressure Putin into accepting a 30-day ceasefire, though Russia has repeatedly rejected the offer.

On Sunday, Trump confirmed that “sanctions are being seriously considered.” He also made the following statement about Putin:

“I’ve known him for a long time, we used to get along well. But now he’s sending rockets into cities and killing people. I don’t like it.”

From Admiration to Criticism: A Changing Attitude

Back in February 2022, as Russia amassed thousands of troops on Ukraine’s border, Trump had called Putin’s tactics “genius.” He described the recognition of eastern Ukrainian regions as independent and plans to “keep the peace” as a “smart move.”

In a radio interview from the same period, he said, “Putin wants Ukraine, but I told him ‘You can’t do it.’ I liked him, and he liked me,” emphasizing the close ties they once shared.

However, now the President is using a much more critical tone against Putin and has even mentioned the possibility of pulling out of the peace process altogether.

The Federation Council, Russia’s upper house of parliament, has approved a bill on taxing cryptocurrency transactions and mining.

This bill aims to exempt cryptocurrency transactions from value-added tax (VAT). For the law to take effect, it now only requires the signature of President Vladimir Putin. The Federation Council stated that the bill was approved on Wednesday, following its passage through the lower house, the State Duma, a day earlier.

The tax law amendments prepared by the Russian government define digital currencies as property. Under the proposed changes, cryptocurrency transactions will be exempt from VAT, and income from trading will be subject to the same tax rates as income from securities transactions.

The maximum personal income tax rate will be 15%. This information was previously reported by the Russian news agency Interfax. Once the law comes into effect, cryptocurrency mining infrastructure operators will be required to report client information to tax authorities. Income from mining activities will be taxed based on its market value at the time of receipt.

The bill, having passed both Russia’s lower and upper houses of parliament, now only awaits President Vladimir Putin’s signature to bring the new tax regime into effect.

The country has recently been working to strengthen regulations on crypto assets, particularly cryptocurrency mining. Earlier this month, the Russian government introduced a limit restricting unregistered individuals from mining Bitcoin with a monthly power consumption exceeding 6,000 kilowatt-hours.

President Vladimir Putin emphasized the adverse effects of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency mining on Russia’s energy infrastructure, calling for strict regulations. Mining activities, with their high electricity consumption, put significant pressure on the country’s energy system. Despite this, Russia remains an attractive location for crypto miners due to low electricity costs and easy access to equipment.

BRICS Countries and the Energy Crisis

As a leading member of the BRICS economic bloc, Russia has issued stern warnings about the impact of cryptocurrency mining on its energy infrastructure. President Putin highlighted the need for strict regulations to prevent potential power outages caused by the high electricity consumption associated with crypto mining.

Pressure on Power Grids

According to President Putin, the unchecked growth of cryptocurrency mining is placing a heavy burden on Russia’s power grids. The increase in electricity usage due to mining activities has created significant strain on the country’s energy infrastructure. Currently, cryptocurrency mining in Russia consumes approximately 16 billion kilowatt-hours annually, accounting for about 1.5% of the country’s total electricity consumption. Without proper regulatory measures, this figure is expected to rise, further increasing the pressure on power supplies.

Laws and Mining Activities

Despite Russia’s stringent cryptocurrency laws, which allow ownership but prohibit their use for payments, cryptocurrency mining remains prevalent. Low electricity costs and the availability of mining equipment make Russia an attractive destination for crypto miners. Consequently, Russia has become the second-largest country for cryptocurrency mining, following the United States.

Energy Consumption and Economic Impacts

Russian officials are increasingly concerned that the intense power consumption of cryptocurrency mining operations could disrupt power supplies to new businesses and residential areas. Such disruptions could hinder investments and delay infrastructure projects critical to economic development. In response, President Putin has called for the implementation of taxes and tariff regulations targeting miners. He also advocated for the creation of a federal law to address the challenges posed by the burgeoning mining sector.

This Might Interest You: Fee Race in Spot Ethereum ETFs: BlackRock and Competitors’ Plans

BRICS and Cryptocurrencies

On a broader scale, BRICS countries are considering the integration of cryptocurrencies into their financial systems. This initiative aims to develop a new currency that could reduce the bloc’s dependency on the US dollar. However, the potential power outages foreseen by Russia highlight the need for a balanced approach. Therefore, BRICS countries plan to implement regulations to effectively manage the use and mining of cryptocurrencies.

Russia’s stern warnings about Bitcoin and cryptocurrency mining have resonated significantly in the global cryptocurrency market. President Putin’s concerns are not only pertinent to Russia but have implications for the entire world. Particularly, the steps taken by BRICS countries regarding the regulation of cryptocurrencies and mining activities could reshape global financial balances.
