Fast and Low-Cost Payments with Blockchain

The Nasdaq-listed distributor (WGRX) announced that its new platform enables independent pharmacies to pay for drug inventory instantly, bypassing banking delays and high credit card fees.

The system is integrated with RxERP, a serialized pharmaceutical e-commerce and enterprise resource planning platform. This ensures real-time tracking, lower costs, and direct settlement between pharmacies and distributors. Pharmacies have already begun registering for the beta version of the program.

Healthcare Payments Integrated with XRP Ledger

The platform is built on the open-source blockchain XRP Ledger (XRPL). Led by Ripple Labs in core development, XRPL powers Wellgistics’ network of more than 6,500 pharmacies and 200 manufacturers.

CEO Brian Norton highlighted that pharmacy owners have shown great interest in the initiative, noting that the healthcare sector is more forward-thinking toward blockchain than many assume.

Compliance, Security, and Future Plans

The program was designed to meet strict compliance standards, including HIPAA and anti-money laundering (AML) requirements. While the first stage focuses on pharmacies, future plans include integrating pharmaceutical manufacturers and testing direct-to-patient delivery models.

Wellgistics also announced on May 8 that it aims to use XRP not only for payments but also as a treasury reserve asset. This initiative is supported by a $50 million credit line, designed to enhance programmable liquidity and financial infrastructure.

Ripple faces strong competition from Ethereum, which leads the RWA space with $3.07 billion in tokenized assets. Stellar, another competitor, holds $386.2 million in tokenized assets. However, Ripple aims to leverage XRPL’s unique features to strengthen its competitive edge.

Both Revive Labs and the HBAR Foundation have “joined as Alliance Members, to provide inputs on policies and oversight, and work together to develop a new interoperability recovery standard that will dramatically simplify the recovery and adoption of crypto and other assets.”

Application providers aim “to make the user experience seamless, user-friendly, and simple enough to gain widespread adoption by millions worldwide” as Web3 applications hit the mainstream.

These days, it takes “a very advanced user, ready to shoulder the burden of protecting their digital assets, accounts, keys, and passwords” to have that kind of experience.

Thanks to decentralized recovery, methods like cold storage and self-custody are no longer needed for any type of asset.

Aiming “to bring together the Web3 ecosystem to offer an open-source, industry-standard methodology that makes digital asset recovery painless and secure across wallets,” the DeRec Alliance was first launched in January of this year by members of the Hedera and Algorand ecosystems. Dr. Leemon Baird, co-founder of Hedera, invented the initiative.

As part of their role as founding members, members contribute to the Alliance’s governance structure and basic policies, as well as serve on the Technical Oversight Committee (TOC) for two years.

Dr. Baird said: “The DeRec Alliance is a group of individuals and organizations committed to making the process of securing and recovering digital assets, accounts, passwords, and other secrets as simple as existing Web2 experiences. We encourage every blockchain and every industry to work together to create the standards and the open source code needed to bring safety to the promise of Web3, without the complexity.”
