U.S. President Donald Trump recently pardoned former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao, also known as CZ. This decision made by Trump created a huge stir, especially within the crypto community. At that moment, everyone had the same question in mind: “How was CZ pardoned?” The answer, according to Politico, is quite clear — this pardon came right after Binance and Zhao conducted high-budget lobbying activities in Washington.

How Did the Process Work for CZ?

In 2023, CZ was sentenced to four years in prison and fined $50 million for allegedly violating U.S. Anti-Money Laundering (AML) laws. However, according to Politico, CZ’s case turned out to be much more than a simple legal process.

The revealed report shows that Binance transferred large sums of money to companies linked to Trump. The largest transfer went to Checkmate Government Relations, owned by Ches McDowell, a close associate of Donald Trump Jr. These transfers brought the firm $450,000 in just one month. During this period, Checkmate became one of the fastest-growing lobbying firms in Washington, generating a total of $7.1 million in revenue over three months.

Binance didn’t stop at working with Trump and his circle; it also began collaborating with former SEC nominee Teresa Goody Guillén for $290,000. This partnership is believed to be part of Binance’s strategy to gain legal and political support within regulatory circles.

Binance Continues Its Lobbying Expenditures!

Binance seems to understand that creating a lobbying presence is inevitable — and it’s acting accordingly. Since 2022, the company has spent over $1 million on lobbying efforts, which is not surprising. However, after reaching a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice in 2023, Binance temporarily paused its lobbying activities. That hiatus ended under Trump’s influence, and since then, the company has spent another $860,000. The community interprets this move as follows:

“Binance wants to be as big at the political table as it is at the crypto table.”

This statement clearly reflects the sentiment within the community, especially after Trump defended CZ by saying, “CZ was persecuted and politically targeted by the Biden administration.” Trump also argued that the accusations were excessive and could have dealt a major blow to the cryptocurrency market.

The leading cryptocurrency platform Binance and its former CEO, Changpeng Zhao, have taken an important step in their legal process with the U.S. SEC. Their legal team argued that the SEC lacks clear regulatory standards for cryptocurrency assets. They also criticized the commission’s “arbitrary” decision regarding which transactions are considered securities. Consequently, they submitted a petition for the dismissal of the SEC’s amended case.

The legal team emphasized that the SEC’s regulatory approach contains uncertainties. This uncertainty negatively affects investors and market participants. Binance serves millions of users worldwide, and these uncertainties complicate their operations. In the petition, they criticized the SEC’s stance on designating certain cryptocurrency transactions as securities. This stance restricts innovative initiatives and hinders the potential benefits of cryptocurrencies. In this context, the legal team highlighted that the SEC’s overly broad interpretation of its regulatory authority threatens fair competition.

Additionally, Binance and Zhao stated in their petition that cryptocurrency products differ from traditional securities. Therefore, they noted that the SEC’s standards are not suitable for the dynamic sector. Zhao also emphasized that the SEC’s decisions have a negative impact on other companies. This situation stifles innovation.

Might interest you: Could a Trump Victory Energize the Crypto Markets?

The uncertainties in the cryptocurrency market undermine investor confidence. The legal processes faced by large exchanges like Binance also draw attention. Zhao and the legal team argued that the SEC’s decisions need to become more transparent and predictable. They also expect regulatory authorities to contribute to the crypto ecosystem.

These developments are causing a significant stir in the cryptocurrency world. Binance’s legal battle is affecting its relationship with the SEC. Experts are questioning how cryptocurrency exchanges will adapt to future regulations. This process is critically important for investors.

Highlighting that Binance has built a successful ecosystem and continues to thrive, Zhao said, “The company is well-managed, and the Binance ecosystem is constantly growing.

Binance founder and former CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has made his first statement after being sentenced to prison.

According to Bloomberg, Changpeng Zhao (CZ), who has a fortune of over $40 billion, will be the richest person to go to federal prison in the US.

Zhao was sentenced to four months in prison for violating US money laundering and sanctions laws.

The US Department of Justice had recommended that the Binance founder be sentenced to three years in prison. A former Binance executive commented on social media:

“I witnessed CZ build the executive team around him in 2021 to prepare Binance for global regulation. Judge Jones made a fair decision considering CZ’s missteps and efforts to rectify past mistakes.”

The Binance founder “thanked everyone for their interest and support” and said he would “remain a passive crypto investor.”

Zhao said that the cryptocurrency industry was entering a new era and emphasized the importance of “regulatory compliance” at this stage.

The US Department of Justice is seeking a three-year prison sentence for Binance founder Changpeng Zhao.

According to a statement by Justice Department attorneys, Zhao should be sentenced to 36 months in prison and fined $50 million for violating the Bank Secrecy Act.

“The sentence in this case will send a message not only to Zhao but to the world,” the department said.

Zhao, who reached a settlement with the US government, was expected to face up to 18 months in prison. However, the department wants Zhao to receive a larger sentence because he committed large-scale crimes.

Zhao’s lawyers had already agreed to the $50 million fine.

The hearing for the Binance founder, originally scheduled for February, was postponed to April 30 by joint decision of the parties.

Binance Having Issues with Brazil! The Representative Committee has presented a report alleging fraud charges against Binance CEO and three directors of Binance’s Brazil branch. The report claims that the directors, including Daniel Mangabeira, Guilherme Haddad Nazar and Thiago Carvalho, were committing fraud without obtaining the necessary permissions.

Binance Having Issues with Brazil!

The Representative Committee backed up their allegations with a 500-page extensive report published yesterday on the subject. It is stated that the said directors continued their operations without permission and sold investment contracts without permission:

“They established companies lacking transparency”

The report emphasizes that Zhao and the other directors have created some opaque official companies, all of these companies are directly or indirectly controlled by Zhao, and these companies have no job descriptions. In addition, there is a statement that these companies only aim to circumvent regulations.

Additionally, the Committee also demands an investigation by the Securities Commission regarding the exchange’s derivative product sales.
