{"id":19592,"date":"2024-05-06T06:00:09","date_gmt":"2024-05-06T06:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coinengineer.io\/?p=19592"},"modified":"2024-05-06T06:27:36","modified_gmt":"2024-05-06T06:27:36","slug":"bitfinex-denies-alleged-data-breach-amid-hacking-groups-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coinengineer.net\/blog\/bitfinex-denies-alleged-data-breach-amid-hacking-groups-claims\/","title":{"rendered":"Bitfinex Denies Alleged Data Breach Amid Hacking Group&#8217;s Claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"px-5 py-3 border border-gray-300 rounded-md text-left text-gray-500 flex flex-col gap-2 sm:text-base text-xs\"><span class=\"text-with-replacments\">Cryptocurrency exchange <strong>Bitfinex<\/strong> is once again in the center of attention after hacking group FSOCIETY announced the successful breach of its database and the leak of 22,500 customer emails and passwords.<\/span><span class=\"text-with-replacments\">\u00a0Nevertheless, <strong>the Chief Technology Officer of Bitfinex, Paolo Ardoino,<\/strong> quickly rejected these allegations, calling them probably fake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text-with-replacments\">Ardoino reiterated that the hacking group would have sought a ransom through different channels upon having verifiable information if they possessed it, which Bitfinex did not receive.<\/span><span class=\"text-with-replacments\">\u00a0\u201cWe do not save plain passwords and <a href=\"https:\/\/coinengineer.net\/blog\/the-huge-sec-was-hacked-because-it-couldnt-set-2fa\/\"><strong>2FA<\/strong> <\/a>secrets in clear text,\u201d he explained as a confirmation of the security of the users\u2019 data at the exchange.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text-with-replacments\">Out of the claimed leaked records, only 5000 corresponded to the Bitfinex users, which made <a href=\"https:\/\/coinengineer.net\/blog\/ceo-paolo-ardoino-unveils-tether-tokenization\/\">Ardoino<\/a> think that the data might have been collected from other cryptographic breaches.<\/span><span class=\"text-with-replacments\"> He mentioned the typical behavior of users using the same credentials across multiple platforms, which may expose them to such threats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text-with-replacments\">In addition, Ardoino presented an opinion from a security researcher who imagined that FSOCIETY\u2019s assertions might be a marketing gimmick to push a data extraction hacking tool.<\/span><span class=\"text-with-replacments\">\u00a0This strategy is to hype up successful hacks in order to promote the effectiveness of the tool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text-with-replacments\">While Bitfinex is still looking into the matter, Ardoino confirmed that no breach had been found, ensuring users that their funds are still safe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text-with-replacments\">This unconfirmed violation is another link in the chain of Bitfinex security issues.<\/span><span class=\"text-with-replacments\"> In November 2023, there was a minor data security incident when a customer support agent was compromised, and this resulted in users being attacked by phishing.<\/span><span class=\"text-with-replacments\"> Nonetheless, Bitfinex has not considered such an incident significant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text-with-replacments\">The exchange also suffered a nasty security <strong>breach in 2016<\/strong> that caused the theft of more than <strong>$70 million worth of Bitcoin,<\/strong> thus making clear the persistence of problems related to asset safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text-with-replacments\">While the cryptocurrency industry is dealing with growing threats, Bitfinex is strengthening its defenses as well as protecting its users.<\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex is once again in the center of attention after hacking group FSOCIETY announced the successful breach of its database and the leak of 22,500 customer emails and passwords.\u00a0Nevertheless, the Chief Technology Officer of Bitfinex, Paolo Ardoino, quickly rejected these allegations, calling them probably fake.
