This topic was raised through a meeting recording, documents, and three officials.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"430\" data-end=\"619\">The idea of paying <strong>HUD grantees using stablecoin<\/strong> was also discussed. The experiment was planned to be tested in one of the department&#8217;s offices first before being expanded to other offices.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"621\" data-end=\"690\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"HUDs_Blockchain_Experiment_Could_Be_a_Step_Toward_Federal_Crypto_Use\"><\/span>HUD&#8217;s Blockchain Experiment Could Be a Step Toward Federal Crypto Use<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"692\" data-end=\"829\">Two officials stated that <strong>HUD&#8217;s blockchain experiment<\/strong> could be a trial run for using crypto and blockchain across the federal government.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"831\" data-end=\"1083\">At a meeting last month, a project was discussed where the Community Planning and Development office, which oversees billions of dollars in grants supporting affordable housing and homeless shelters, would transfer funds to a grantee on the blockchain.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1085\" data-end=\"1317\">One attendee wrote that the need for the project was \u201cnot well articulated,\u201d and a<strong> HUD official criticized the plan<\/strong> in a staff memo as \u201cdangerous and inefficient.\u201d They also pointed out that stablecoin payments would add volatility.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1319\" data-end=\"1646\">In a follow-up meeting, <strong>HUD staff offered a more mixed view<\/strong>, with some saying the blockchain project could involve paying grantees with crypto and one official suggesting it could be done with \u201ca stable currency.\u201d Another finance official mentioned that blockchain would be implemented across the agency, starting with the CPD.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1648\" data-end=\"1776\">However, a HUD spokesperson stated, \u201cThe department has no plans for blockchain or stablecoin. Education is not implementation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1778\" data-end=\"2040\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Meanwhile, <strong>U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent<\/strong>, speaking at the White House Crypto Summit on March 7, said the government would \u201cput a lot of thought into the stablecoin regime\u201d in an effort to \u201ckeep the U.S. dollar the dominant reserve currency in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p data-start=\"1778\" data-end=\"2040\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><em>You can also freely share your thoughts and comments about the topic in the comment section.
