This makes it hard to find common ground with the EU.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1250\" data-end=\"1374\">\u201cIt\u2019s very difficult to reach a trade deal with the European Union because they struggle to form a unified will,\u201d Ross said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-start=\"1376\" data-end=\"1424\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Trumps_Threats_Toward_the_EU_Are_Increasing\"><\/span>Trump\u2019s Threats Toward the EU Are Increasing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1426\" data-end=\"1720\">Trump has openly expressed his dissatisfaction with the slow progress in negotiations with the EU. In posts on <strong data-start=\"1537\" data-end=\"1553\">Truth Social<\/strong>, he threatened to impose a <strong data-start=\"1581\" data-end=\"1595\">50% tariff<\/strong> on EU imports. This tariff has been temporarily postponed for 90 days, but it may come back if negotiations fail to advance.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1722\" data-end=\"2086\"><strong data-start=\"1722\" data-end=\"1782\">Former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker<\/strong> also voiced strong criticism during this period. He noted that his successor, <strong data-start=\"1861\" data-end=\"1885\">Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>, failed to establish direct contact with Trump and started negotiations too late. Juncker had met with Trump seven times in 2018, successfully persuading him to suspend <strong data-start=\"2055\" data-end=\"2085\">steel and aluminum tariffs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2088\" data-end=\"2232\">In contrast, von der Leyen has only held brief talks on the sidelines of international events, which has weakened the EU\u2019s negotiating position.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2234\" data-end=\"2487\">Juncker emphasized the need for a strong stance when dealing with Trump, saying, \u201cIf you stand your ground, he respects you.\u201d Otherwise, there is a risk that European countries may grow closer to <strong data-start=\"2430\" data-end=\"2450\">China and Russia<\/strong>, and the U.S. could lose its allies.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2489\" data-end=\"2523\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_the_EU_Weak_Or_Unprepared\"><\/span>Is the EU Weak?
