Drawing parallels to the rapid acceleration of artificial intelligence, he argued that technological progress may come much faster than most expect.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"963\" data-end=\"1124\">\u201cBitcoin should migrate to a quantum-resistant signature scheme,\u201d he urged, noting that waiting too long could leave the network vulnerable at a critical time.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1131\" data-end=\"1166\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_the_Quantum_Threat_Matters\"><\/span>Why the Quantum Threat Matters<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1168\" data-end=\"1419\">Bitcoin\u2019s security is built on the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA). This cryptographic method relies on the difficulty of solving the elliptic curve discrete logarithm problem \u2014 something classical computers cannot do efficiently.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1421\" data-end=\"1575\">Quantum computers, however, are theoretically capable of breaking this system, undermining the foundation of wallet security and transaction validation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1577\" data-end=\"1783\">This concern isn\u2019t exclusive to Yakovenko. Earlier this year, Naoris Protocol founder David Carvalho warned that advanced quantum machines might crack Bitcoin\u2019s current encryption in less than five years.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1790\" data-end=\"1844\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Challenge_of_Making_Bitcoin_Quantum-Resistant\"><\/span>The Challenge of Making Bitcoin Quantum-Resistant<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1846\" data-end=\"2038\">In theory, Bitcoin could adopt quantum-resistant cryptography. But doing so would require a <strong data-start=\"1938\" data-end=\"1951\">hard fork<\/strong>, one of the most contentious and disruptive types of upgrades in blockchain systems.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2040\" data-end=\"2218\">Given Bitcoin\u2019s conservative culture and the community\u2019s hesitancy toward drastic protocol changes, implementing such a transition would be politically and technically complex.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2225\" data-end=\"2271\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Divided_Opinions_in_the_Bitcoin_Community\"><\/span>Divided Opinions in the Bitcoin Community<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2273\" data-end=\"2365\">While Yakovenko and others push for urgency, not everyone in the Bitcoin ecosystem agrees.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2367\" data-end=\"2875\">\n<li data-start=\"2367\" data-end=\"2646\">\n<p data-start=\"2369\" data-end=\"2646\">Adam Back, CEO of Blockstream, believes existing quantum computers don\u2019t currently threaten Bitcoin, though he admits they could in the long run. In his view, it would likely take at least two decades before quantum machines reach a level where they endanger the network.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2648\" data-end=\"2875\">\n<p data-start=\"2650\" data-end=\"2875\">Samson Mow, founder of Jan3, takes a similar stance. He acknowledges the risk but argues it\u2019s still far in the future: \u201cThis is a real risk, but at least a decade away.
