SEC<\/strong>\u00a0has postponed its decision this week on whether the Hashdex Ethereum ETF<\/strong>, which wants to hold both spot<\/strong> and futures contracts<\/strong>, will be approved.<\/p>\n

The SEC<\/strong> said it needed more time to act on the changes and would make a decision on whether to approve, disapprove, or initiate proceedings to determine disapproval<\/strong> by January 1, 2024<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In a file dated November 15<\/strong>, the SEC<\/strong> stated, “The Commission finds it appropriate to set a longer period to act on the proposed rule change so that it has sufficient time to consider the proposed rule change and the issues raised here.”<\/p>\n

The Nasdaq<\/strong> stock exchange applied to the SEC in September<\/strong> to list the Hashdex Ethereum ETF<\/strong>. Toroso Investments <\/strong>(a commodity pool operator registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission<\/strong> and a member of the National Futures Association<\/strong>) managed and controlled this\u00a0fund.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the 19b-4 form<\/strong>, Nasdaq<\/strong> stated, \u201cInstead of holding 100% spot ether, which may become more sensitive to price manipulation in the spot market, the fund will hold a mixture of spot ether, ether futures contracts, and cash.”<\/p>\n

The History of SEC with Ethereum ETFs<\/h2>\n

The SEC<\/strong> had previously approved an ETF similar to Ethereum<\/strong> but had not approved a spot ETF or a mixed ETF<\/strong>. Last month, it approved and launched nine futures-based products<\/strong> at the same time.<\/p>\n

Recently, companies<\/strong> have been pushing for spot ether ETFs<\/strong>; including Grayscale<\/strong>\u2019s proposal last month to convert its Ethereum trust to a spot ether ETF and BlackRock<\/strong>\u2019s move to apply for a spot ether ETF last week.<\/p>\n
