Synchron’s BCI Offers Hope for Paralyzed Patients

Synchron

Patients with severe paralysis who had lost the use of their upper limbs would most likely employ the function Synchron said to interact hands-free with the surroundings.

“This is critical for individuals with neurological disorders, who may otherwise have trouble generating complex responses contextual to their environment,”  Synchron stated in the press release.

“With my illness getting worse, I’ll probably lose my capacity to speak, so this technology gives me hope that I’ll be able to stay in touch with my loved ones in the future. “This will be a game changer,” expressed Mark, an ALS patient utilizing Synchron’s BCI technology.

Established in 2012 and supported by tech billionaires Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, Synchron is creating an implant akin to Elon Musk’s Neuralink that lets users interact with computers and other devices.

Synchron’s BCI claims, however, that its implant is placed via a “minimally-invasive” surgical technique whereby the little device is introduced via the jugular vein in the neck and subsequently moves to a blood artery on the surface of the motor cortex of the patient’s brain.

Once implanted, the device wirelessly detects and sends “motor intent” from the brain, enabling paraplegic individuals to operate items using their minds.

Currently implanted by way of surgery whereby a small portion of the patient’s skull is opened and a surgical robot is placed in the area of the brain controlling movement intention, is Neuralink’s brain chip.

Using just his mind, 29-year-old paraplegic Noland Arbaugh showed footage of the first human patient to be implanted with a Neuralink device operating the cursor of a computer and playing games like Civilization V.
