FIFA, the world’s leading football organization, is taking its interest in digital assets and Web3 technologies one step further by announcing the creation of its own Layer-1 (L1) blockchain network built on Avalanche’s infrastructure.
The upcoming FIFA Blockchain will be a customizable L1 chain based on Avalanche’s proprietary infrastructure, also known as a subnet. This development closely follows the recent Avalanche9000 upgrade, which aims to attract more developers and facilitate enterprise-level blockchain applications.
FIFA’s Previous Blockchain Initiatives
This move is not FIFA’s first entry into the blockchain space. Back in 2022, just ahead of the Qatar World Cup, FIFA launched an NFT collection via the Algorand network. In April 2024, FIFA signaled its intention to migrate that collection to an EVM-compatible blockchain, while reaffirming its commitment to broader Web3 initiatives.
FIFA Remains Committed Despite the NFT Slowdown
Although the NFT boom once attracted numerous corporations, interest faded significantly during the crypto winter. Still, FIFA’s ongoing involvement highlights that the potential of blockchain technology is far from exhausted, with major institutions continuing to explore the space.
John Nahas, Chief Business Officer at Ava Labs, stated:
“Avalanche was built to serve organizations in need of custom, high-performance blockchain solutions. FIFA’s choice to build its L1 using Avalanche reinforces the strength of our technology to deliver secure, flexible, and scalable applications globally.”
What’s Next for FIFA’s Blockchain?
Currently, FIFA offers a World Cup-themed NFT collection and a digital collectibles marketplace. However, the organization has not yet disclosed specific plans for future developments on its newly announced blockchain network.
FIFA’s initiative marks a significant milestone at the intersection of sports and blockchain, showcasing growing interest in tailored blockchain solutions for large-scale enterprises.
