As 2026 begins, Ethereum is entering one of the most active periods in its history. Recent on-chain data shows that the network is handling a level of transaction throughput never seen before, highlighting both rising demand and improved network efficiency.

New All-Time High in Daily Transactions

Ethereum processed 2,885,524 transactions in a single day on Friday, setting a new record for daily activity. This milestone reflects a clear acceleration in network usage that has been building since mid-December. After a prolonged slowdown throughout much of 2025, transaction volumes began to recover toward the end of the year and have continued climbing into early 2026.

Importantly, this increase does not appear to be a one-off spike. Instead, it suggests a broader shift back toward higher baseline activity levels across the Ethereum ecosystem, driven by applications, users, and infrastructure returning to sustained growth.

Network Load Rising Without Fee Pressure

One of the most notable aspects of this surge is what has not happened. Despite record transaction counts, average gas fees remain close to recent lows. In previous market cycles, similar increases in usage often resulted in sharp fee spikes and network congestion.

This time, Ethereum appears better equipped to handle demand. Ongoing protocol upgrades, combined with the growing role of layer-2 networks, have significantly reduced pressure on the main chain. While overall activity is rising, a meaningful portion of that load is being distributed more efficiently across the broader Ethereum scaling stack.

Staking Queues Signal Stability, Not Stress

Alongside higher transaction activity, Ethereum’s staking mechanics are showing signs of balance rather than strain. The validator exit queue has dropped to zero, meaning stakers can withdraw ETH without delay. At the same time, entry queues remain extended, indicating continued interest in staking without a rush to exit.

This combination points to a stable staking environment. There is no evidence of panic withdrawals or speculative lockups. Instead, participation appears steady, suggesting confidence in the network’s long-term fundamentals.

What This Means for Ethereum Narrative

Taken together, record transaction throughput, low fees, and stable staking conditions suggest Ethereum is maturing as a network. It is increasingly capable of supporting heavy usage without the bottlenecks that once defined periods of high demand.

For users, this translates into a smoother experience. For the broader market, it subtly challenges the long-standing assumption that higher usage must inevitably lead to fee spikes and reduced supply pressure. Ethereum’s current performance suggests a more nuanced reality is taking shape.

You can also freely share your thoughts and comments about the topic in the comment section.

Ethereum (ETH) co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated that within the Ethereum ecosystem, the greatest need for a strong social philosophy is not at the infrastructure level but at the application layer.

The application layer represents the level at which developers build decentralized applications on Ethereum’s core architecture and make fundamental decisions about how those applications operate.

On April 12, Buterin responded on the social media platform Warpcast to a comment suggesting that Ethereum needs a new generation of developers committed to its core values. Buterin offered a different perspective:

“Applications are 80% purpose-driven. What kinds of applications you build depends on your ideas about what Ethereum and Ethereum-based applications should mean for the world. That’s why it’s crucial to have strong ideas on this matter,”

General-Purpose Technologies and the Influence of Ideology

Using the example of the programming language C++, Buterin explained that general-purpose tools may not be heavily affected by the ideologies of their creators.

“If C++ had been developed by a totalitarian, racist, and fascist, that wouldn’t necessarily make it a worse language,” said Buterin, emphasizing that infrastructure layers are relatively less influenced in this regard.

However, he also noted that Ethereum’s Layer 1 is not entirely neutral. He pointed out that choices such as transitioning to Proof-of-Stake (PoS) and supporting light clients were driven by philosophical decisions.“Someone who doesn’t believe in decentralization wouldn’t build light clients or advanced account abstraction. Someone who doesn’t care about energy waste wouldn’t spend years transitioning to PoS,” he said, adding that Ethereum could still be considered roughly 50% general-purpose. “Someone who doesn’t believe in decentralization wouldn’t build light clients or advanced account abstraction. Someone who doesn’t care about energy waste wouldn’t spend years transitioning to PoS,” he said, adding that Ethereum could still be considered roughly 50% general-purpose.

The Social Philosophy of Applications: Good and Bad Examples

Vitalik Buterin argues that applications should be evaluated not only for their technical structures but also for the value systems behind them. According to him, some applications are designed with user protection and social benefit in mind, while others are driven solely by profit and may lead to harmful outcomes.

He cited Railgun, Farcaster, Polymarket, and Signal as examples of applications with a strong social philosophy, stating that these are developed with the principle of “doing the right thing by default in the background.” In particular, Buterin highlighted Signal and Farcaster as platforms that uphold values like user privacy, security, and decentralization, noting that these principles align with the Ethereum ecosystem’s broader mission. While acknowledging that these applications are not without flaws, he emphasized that their core philosophies reflect a strong sense of social responsibility.

In contrast, Buterin criticized platforms like Pump.fun, Terra and its native token LUNA, and the bankrupt crypto exchange FTX. He described these as platforms developed without a solid social vision, exposing users to risk and prioritizing speculative, short-term profits. Such applications, he argued, stand in stark contrast to the values Ethereum aims to represent.

In conclusion, Buterin’s message is clear: what an application does is directly shaped by the beliefs of its developers. This suggests that Ethereum’s future will be shaped not only by technical innovations but also by philosophical and ethical stances.

What has happened in the crypto world on April 1st so far? From Vitalik to Trust Wallet, Samson Mow to Binance; here are the funniest and most surprising pranks!

1- OneCoin Dethroned Ethereum!

On April 1, 2017, CoinDesk published a news article that could have shaken the crypto world. According to the report, a federal judge had ruled that OneCoin was a legitimate and legal cryptocurrency. As a result, CoinMarketCap would be required to list OneCoin, which would push it ahead of Ethereum to claim the second spot by market cap.

Even more importantly, the decision was said to highlight government intervention in the crypto ecosystem, which is supposed to be decentralized. Such a massive news piece might have emotionally driven some investors to change their trading plans. However, the following sentence at the end of the article eased the tension:

“Unprecedented price volatility is not expected across major cryptocurrencies in the coming days… because this is just a huge joke!”

2- “Degen Communism: The Only Correct Ideology!” – Vitalik Buterin

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin made his own April Fools’ joke by writing a humorous blog post declaring that “degen communism” was the only acceptable political ideology in the crypto world. This concept was seen as a playful jab at the memecoin craze.

Degen communism: the only correct political ideologyhttps://t.co/CpFdMGCsJg

— vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) April 1, 2024

According to Buterin, degen communism is an ideology that embraces chaos but fine-tunes the fundamental rules and incentive structures to guide the outcomes of this chaos toward the collective good.

3- Trust Wallet’s April Fools’ Prank: The Real Satoshi Nakamoto Confirmed!

One of the most debated topics in the crypto world is the identity of Bitcoin’s mysterious creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Over the years, many people have claimed to be Nakamoto or to know the real identity, but the community has always approached these declarations with skepticism.

One of the most controversial figures claiming to be Nakamoto is Craig Wright. However, Wright’s claims have been repeatedly disproven.

Adding a humorous touch to this debate, Trust Wallet made the following post on X (Twitter) on April 1st:

BREAKING: Craig Wright has been confirmed as Satoshi Nakamoto!

Just kidding, April fools!

— Trust Wallet (@TrustWallet) April 1, 2020

However, Trust Wallet didn’t drag the joke out for too long and quickly added a clarification beneath the tweet:

“Just kidding, April Fools!”

As April Fools’ jokes have become a tradition in the crypto world, Trust Wallet joined in the fun by adding a humorous twist to the Craig Wright debate.

4- Binance’s “Croc” Prank: Meaningless but Funny!

The crypto exchange Binance took an unconventional approach to April Fools’ jokes, making its followers laugh. The company posted a picture of a “Croc” (slipper) next to its logo on social media with the following message:

Crucial information. pic.twitter.com/FQiERcOkbV

— Binance (@binance) April 1, 2023

Without any context or explanation, this post gained significant attention within the crypto community. As users debated what Binance might be trying to convey, the company kept the prank’s mystery intact, offering no further clarification.

5- Samson Mow: EU is Introducing Office Hours for Crypto Wallets (!)

Crypto entrepreneur Samson Mow made a notable post on social media, claiming that the European Union would impose bank-like restrictions on crypto wallets. According to Mow, under the new regulations, crypto wallets would only be allowed to make transactions:

BREAKING: EU lawmakers decide to unban self-hosted wallets, but will limit the number of addresses to 10. Also, wallets will only be allowed to send and receive transactions from Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, excluding holidays.

— Samson Mow (@Excellion) April 1, 2023

Such a restriction would completely contradict the fundamental purpose of cryptocurrencies, which were designed as an alternative to traditional banking systems. However, Mow’s April Fools’ joke also made a subtle reference to the EU’s real regulatory efforts to limit self-hosted wallets.

Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin made statements regarding the Ethereum Foundation’s recently criticized ETH sales. In a response to a follower, Buterin said, “I haven’t sold a single ETH in the last month. The amount of ETH I have actually increased.” These statements presented an important opportunity to understand the reasons behind the Ethereum Foundation’s sales.

Buterin stated that the Ethereum Foundation’s ETH sales had some important purposes:

Proof of Work Loss Prevention: The Foundation is working to ensure that Ethereum does not lose 5 million ETH to the Proof of Work system each year.

Low Transaction Fees: Research is being conducted to ensure that Ethereum users can transact with low transaction fees.

Fast Transaction Times: Investments are being made to ensure that transactions take less than 30 seconds instead of 1-30 minutes.

Zk Technology: Work continues on zk (zero-knowledge) technology, which allows users to use Ethereum while protecting their privacy. The “Railway” project was shown as an example.

Account Abstraction Technology: Account abstraction technologies are being developed to enable users to use Ethereum securely without recovery words or centralized security vulnerabilities.

Local Ethereum Events: Supporting local Ethereum events around the world, often without even mentioning the foundation’s name.

Uninterrupted Service: Since 2016, security efforts have continued to ensure that there have been no interruptions due to DoS attacks and consensus failures.

Security Efforts: Various security measures and efforts are in place to prevent the loss of many funds.

Developer Tools: Support is provided for the development of libraries included in all the code that users use, such as wallets and DeFi applications.

Buterin noted that although ETH sales account for a very low percentage of trading volume, the attention of investors and the community is still focused on the Ethereum Foundation. In particular, ETH’s 32 percent depreciation against BTC throughout the year increased the reaction of investors. However, Buterin emphasized that the foundation’s activities serve long-term goals.

Today, the Ethereum Foundation holds about 270 thousand ETH and the value of these assets reaches 670 million dollars. This year, the foundation sold 4,66 ETH worth $11 million. Buterin emphasized the importance of the work done to ensure the sustainability of Ethereum, stating that the community should show more respect.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has fiercely criticized MicroStrategy founder Michael Saylor’s recent comments advocating for Bitcoin custody through large banks. Buterin labeled the idea as “batshit insane,” expressing his dismay that Saylor, once a strong proponent of self-custody, now suggests relying on “too big to fail” banks like BlackRock and Fidelity to hold Bitcoin.

Vitalik Buterin argued that Saylor’s stance promotes a “regulatory capture” approach that contradicts the core principles of cryptocurrency. He emphasized that crypto was designed to resist centralization and government intervention, not to be managed by large financial institutions deeply integrated with regulatory authorities. According to Buterin, entrusting Bitcoin to traditional banks could lead to failures, undermining the decentralized ethos of crypto.

Saylor’s comments have sparked significant backlash. Notably, Casa’s Jameson Lopp and ShapeShift founder Erik Voorhees joined the debate, championing self-custody as critical to Bitcoin’s decentralized network. Voorhees stated that self-custody is the “check” that prevents centralization and corruption in the ecosystem.

The controversy follows Saylor’s interview on Oct. 21, where he also criticized “crypto-anarchists” and warned that non-regulated entities increase the risk of asset seizure. His shift in opinion has drawn ire from many in the crypto space, who view it as a departure from Bitcoin’s core values.

According to Onchain data, Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, has made significant sales on six different altcoins in recent hours.

Buterin sold many altcoins, especially memecoins, and received Ethereum (ETH) in return. As a result of his latest transactions, it was recorded that he earned approximately $633,000 worth of ETH by selling all six different memecoins.

The memecoins Buterin sold and the sales amounts are as follows:

MSTR $281,000

POPCAT $185,000

ITO $90,000

ETH6900 $37,800

SATO $27,900

Milo $11,700

It is known that Vitalik Buterin has recently been inclined to donate to charities by selling the memecoins in his wallet. According to estimates, a similar donation move may come as a result of these sales.

Might interest you: What is BabyDoge?

It is important to note that none of these altcoins were purchased by Buterin, but developers sent him these tokens to promote their projects. Buterin previously caused controversy by donating more than $1 billion worth of SHIB tokens to a hospital in India. He has not made such a large sale since then.
