According to data from Arkham Intelligence, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has regained billionaire status. ETH price reached a new 2025 high of $4,332 earlier today.
Buterin first became a billionaire in May 2021 at just 27 years old. This estimate is based on his publicly available holdings. The Canadian entrepreneur became one of the youngest self-made billionaires globally at that time.
In November 2021, ETH hit a new record high of $4,868, further increasing Buterin’s wealth. However, after a sharp price drop in May 2022, Buterin announced he was no longer a billionaire.
By June 2022, ETH’s price had fallen more than 80% from its peak. Yet, by August 2025, the flagship altcoin approached new record highs again, currently trading around $4,172.
Vitalik Buterin’s Wealth Source and Philanthropy
The majority of Buterin’s wealth comes from his large ETH holdings allocated before mining began. These holdings remain his main asset base. Additionally, Buterin is known for his philanthropic efforts within the crypto community.
For example, in 2021, he donated over $1 billion worth of SHIB tokens gifted to him to CryptoRelief, a health-focused fund. Furthermore, Buterin actively supports social impact initiatives based on blockchain technology.

The richest known figure in crypto remains the mysterious Bitcoin creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) ranks second with an estimated net worth of $90 billion. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is third, with an estimated fortune of $15 billion.
