Aptos Labs and NBCUniversal have entered into a long-term development agreement that will provide the entertainment company with Web3 fan experiences, customer loyalty programs and games. Aptos already has a track record of developing fan experiences for major Universal films.
Aptos will expand on previous Web3 initiatives from NBCUniversal. In March 2023, Aptos developed the game Free Renfield The Game based on the movie “Renfield”. This game, in which players search for insects that grant superhuman powers and match them with movie scenes, has won awards such as collectible digital artworks.
In September, Aptos offered behind-the-scenes media, augmented reality filters, digital art and opportunities to win prizes for those who purchased tickets to “The Exorcist: Believer” through its Fandango service.
Other NBCUniversal Web3 offerings included a digital scavenger hunt at Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort. This event was created in collaboration with the MoonPay blockchain payment system. Greg Reed, vice president of technology partnerships at Universal Pictures, said:
“Today’s media and entertainment landscape is rapidly changing, and fan experiences and preferences are driving more of these changes than in previous eras.”
NBCUniversal is owned by telecommunications giant Comcast. NBCUniversal owns the DreamWorks movie studio and the Peacock streaming service.
Led by former Meta executives Mo Shaikh and Avery Ching, Aptos launched a proof-of-stake blockchain in October 2022 using a programming language developed for Meta’s failed Diem stablecoin project. This blockchain powers many projects such as PancakeSwap decentralized crypto exchange, Chingari Indian social media platform, and Overlai intellectual property protection service.
Aptos integrated AI tools from Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI service in August and aims to appeal to the financial services industry.
